Xdebug's built-in profiler allows you to find bottlenecks in your script and visualize those with an external tool such as KCacheGrind or WinCacheGrind.
Introduction
Xdebug's Profiler is a powerful tool that gives you the ability to analyze your PHP code and determine bottlenecks or generally see which parts of your code are slow and could use a speed boost. The profiler in Xdebug 2 outputs profiling information in the form of a cachegrind compatible file. This allows you to use the excellent KCacheGrind tool (Linux, KDE) to analyse your profiling data. Users of the Windows operating system can use WinCacheGrind , the functionality is different from KCacheGrind so the section that documents the use of KCacheGrind on this page doesn't apply to this program. In case you can not use KDE (or do not want to use KDE) the kcachegrind package also comes with a perl script "ct_annotate" which produces ASCII output from the profiler trace files.
Starting The Profiler
Profiling is enabled by setting the xdebug.profiler_enable

As the stars of true-crime documentaries, TV series and Hollywood thrillers, criminal profilers have one of the best-known law enforcement jobs in the world. Basic profiling identifying the perpetrator of a crime based on an analysis of crime and the way it was committed is a common investigative tool. But some fear that police departments have taken profiling too far, harassing or even arresting people because of certain characteristics they might have in common with criminals or worse yet, because of their skin color. Others argue that in an age of terrorism and violent crime, we can't afford not to examine people based on crime patterns, even if that means suspicion based on race.

Profiling
There is a great discussion about profiling going on in the comments to the previous post. To help, here is what I wrote on the subject in Beyond Fear (pp. 133-7): Good security has people in charge. People are resilient. People can improvise. People can be creative. People can develop on-the-spot solutions. People can detect attackers who cheat, and can attempt to maintain security despite the cheating. People can detect passive failures and attempt to recover. People are the strongest point in a security process. When a security system succeeds in the face of a new or coordinated or devastating attack, it’s usually due to the efforts of people. On 14 December 1999, Ahmed Ressam tried to enter the U.S. by ferryboat from Victoria Island, British Columbia. In the trunk of his car, he had a suitcase bomb. His plan was to drive to Los Angeles International Airport, put his suitcase on a luggage cart in the terminal, set the timer, and then leave. The plan would have worked had someone not been vigilant. There’s a dirty word for what Dean did that chilly afternoon in December, and it’s

Introduction What You Can Do News Resources ... Cases Introduction Profiling is the recording and classification of behaviors. This occurs through aggregating information from online and offline purchase data, supermarket savings cards, white pages, surveys, sweepstakes and contest entries, financial records, property records, U.S. Census records, motor vehicle data, automatic number information, credit card transactions, phone records (Customer Proprietary Network Information or "CPNI"), credit records, product warranty cards, the sale of magazine and catalog subscriptions, and public records. Profiling has sparked an entire industry euphemistically labeled "Customer Relations Management" (CRM) or "Personalization." Companies collect information derived from a number of resources to build comprehensive profiles on individuals in order to sell products and to sell dossiers on behavior. This is often done without notice or extending a choice to the individual to opt-out of the dossier building. These dossiers may be used by marketers for target advertising, and they may be sold to government for law enforcement purposes. Companies also "enhance" dossiers that they already own by combining or "overlaying" information from other databases. These dossiers may link individual's identities to the following attributes:

What can affect the relevancy of Profiles?

Personality profiles publicly available information on the internet and media. There is no necessity to take written or verbal tests and no necessity of lengthy question and answers as in the Myers-Briggs tests. Psychological and Personality profiles deduced from background information have the potential to surpass conventional testing methods as they consider more factors than what people say. The more information you provide and the more information available about a person the more comprehensive the psychological profile. Psychological profiling can help estimate behaviors, habits, personal traits and special talents. What is the definition of Psychological, Personality or Behavior Profiling?

Using the role attribute for profiling Profiling is the term used in DocBook to describe conditional text. Conditional text means you can create a single XML document with some elements marked as conditional. When you process such a document, you can specify which conditions apply for that version of output, and the stylesheet will include or exclude the marked text to satisfy the conditions. This feature is useful when you need to produce more than one version of a document, and the versions differ in minor ways. Then you do not have to maintain separate documents that are nearly but not quite the same, and thereby run the risk of the separate documents getting out of synchronization as you make changes. With conditional text, you keep all the variations in the same document and select the ones you want at production time. This feature is typically used to create different versions of a document for different audiences. That's where the term profiling comes in. You can create a document profiled for a particular audience. For example, software that runs on different platforms might need different installation instructions for each platform, but might otherwise be the same. You can create one version profiled for Linux customers and another profiled for Windows customers.
