Vision: To foster an international partnership using DNA in law enforcement Interpol recognises the value of DNA profiling and is supporting this new investigative tool. Following the acceptance of Resolution No. 8 of the 67th General Assembly (Cairo, 1998) to advance international co-operation on the use of DNA in criminal investigations, the Interpol DNA Unit has been established. The objective of this unit is to: provide strategic and technical support to enhance member states' DNA profiling capacity and promote widespread use in the international law enforcement environment. The DNA Unit has designed the following projects to assist member states and encourage DNA profile comparison across international borders: Interpol DNA Database and Gateway Data matching capacity available to all member states using DNA profiling in law enforcement that is in accordance with their national legislation. DNA profiles can be stored and searched across international borders using the Interpol Standard Set Of Loci (ISSOL).

Profiling XML Schema
by Paul Kiel
September 20, 2006
XML Schema is now 5 years old, having matured from a newborn into an active youngster. So what have we learned about this young one's personality? We've always known it was complex. Indeed, the original debate about whether to make it a Recommendation indicated concern. (See Last Word and Questionnaire .) This rich toolset has caused schema designers to wonder which features they should or should not use. If we analyze what people are actually implementing, perhaps we can glean some guidance. I decided to embark on a quest to see if we can put together a profile of XML Schema based on experiences thus far.
Background
A profile is a set of agreed upon practices reflecting the most commonly accepted usage patterns of a given technology. A usage profile of XML Schema would indicate a series of features that are commonly implemented and supported in tools. The concept of a profile of XML Schema has been debated over the years. In 2004, the Web Services Interoperability Consortium went so far as to charter a work group (PDF) to examine the idea of a formal profile for XML Schema. It led the W3C to hold a

Profiling an Application
In the current environment of short development cycles for delivering a product, developers tend to focus more on the functional aspects of application execution, mostly via testing, debugging, and code fixing. However, many problems do not easily surface until the application is running in production mode, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and gets pushed to limits during some unexpected peak periods.
The kinds of performance problems encountered in production cannot be discovered during a debugging session. Before deployed and run in production mode, it is important to use a Profiling tool to analyze application execution and identify performance problems, such as execution bottlenecks, object leaks, and system resource limitations.
This article provides an introduction to the TPTP Profiling tool. It demonstrates how to use the TPTP Profiling tool to profile a Java application in order to identify performance hot spots, and fix and validate performance problems.

Heather Mac Donald EMAIL RESPOND PRINT T he anti-"racial profiling" juggernaut must be stopped, before it obliterates the crime-fighting gains of the last decade, especially in inner cities. The anti-profiling crusade thrives on an ignorance of policing and a willful blindness to the demographics of crime. Yet politicians are swarming on board. In February, President George W. Bush joined the rush, declaring portentously: "Racial profiling is wrong, and we will end it in America." Too bad no one asked President Bush: "What exactly do you mean by 'racial profiling,' and what evidence do you have that it exists?" For the anti-profiling crusaders have created a headlong movement without defining their central term and without providing a shred of credible evidence that "racial profiling" is a widespread police practice. The ultimate question in the profiling controversy is whether the disproportionate involvement of blacks and Hispanics with law enforcement reflects police racism or the consequences of disproportionate minority crime. Anti-profiling activists hope to make police racism an all but irrebuttable presumption whenever enforcement statistics show high rates of minority stops and arrests. But not so fast.

We still need you to submit good articles about software you like bootchart to my attention. bootchart , the profiler daemon to gather resource data from /proc during boot, and bootchart-view to create an image from the collected data. bootchartd starts measuring as soon as /proc is mounted. From /proc it collects a sizeable amount of data about processes, including (in 2.6 kernels) disk utilization and throughput. The documentation suggests to use BSD process accounting to exactly reconstruct the process tree. The CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT_V3 feature is enabled in stock Debian kernels, so to use this, you just need to install the acct package.

Profiling Your Applications with Eclipse Callisto
by John Ferguson Smart
The latest release of Eclipse (Eclipse 3.2) comes with Callisto , a rich set of optional plugins for Eclipse 3.2. Callisto includes a powerful profiling tool called the Eclipse , or TPTP. TPTP provides a comprehensive suite of open source performance-testing and profiling tools, including integrated application monitoring, testing, tracing and profiling functionalities, and static-code analysis tools. Profiling tools are invaluable aids for localizing and identifying performance issues in all sorts of Java applications. In this article, we will look at how you can use TPTP to guarantee high-quality and high-performance code, even during unit and integration testing.
Installing TPTP
Figure 1. Installing TPTP from the remote site
Profiling a Java Application
TPTP is well suited to this type of task. A typical use case is to run load tests using a tool such as JMeter, and record and analyze the performance statistics using the TPTP tools. However, this is not the only way you can profile an application with TPTP. As a rule, the earlier you test, the fewer problems you have later. With TPTP, you can profile your code in a wide range of contexts, including JUnit test cases, Java applications, and web applications. And it is well integrated into the Eclipse IDE. So, there is no reason not to start preliminary performance tests and profiling early on.

New Technique Puts DNA Profiling Of E. Coli On Fast Track
ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2008) See also: Michigan State University has developed a new technique to test the DNA of E. coli bacteria by examining very small genetic changes called single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs (pronounced snips). Using SNPs, scientists analyzed 96 markers, making genetic analysis of pathogenic bacteria possible at a rate never before accomplished. "It used to take three months to score one gene individually," said Thomas Whittam, Hannah Distinguished Professor at the National Food Safety and Toxicology Center at MSU. "Now, we are working on a new, more rapid system that can do thousands of genes per day." In a new study* Whittam and his co-authors looked at the DNA of more than 500 strains of a particularly dangerous member of the E. coli family, O157:H7. In collaboration with David Alland of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Whittam discovered that individual bacteria could be separated into nine major groups, called clades. E coli makes people sick because they produce toxins, called Shiga toxins. These toxins block protein synthesis, an essential cellular function, particularly in the kidneys. What Whittam found was that the different clades produced different kinds of Shiga toxins in varying amounts based on their DNA.
