Radio UserLand
Profiling in Radio A deep developer feature
First, a huge caveat, there probably are only about 20 or 30 people on the planet who could use this feature, but for them, it's an incredible viewing port into the performance of the dynamic HTTP server that's built into Radio 8. The instructions below are designed for developers. If you're not sure what's going on, please please, don't use profiling. It's only for the mighty (and arrogant).
What's new
We've adapted the profiling feature from Frontier to make it easy to see where the scripts that build a page are spending their time. If you turn the feature on, the server will produce a report, in an outline, that shows you how many sixtieths of a second each routine took.
How To
1. Update Radio.root.
2. Enter this in the Quick Script window: system.temp.radio.misc.flProfileBuildPage = true 3. In the Web browser, access one of the pages on the desktop website. Try the News page . It can be pretty slow. For now!

September 24, 1999 - Important Announcement We regret to announce that Profiling-L, the criminal profiling discussion list sponsored by Knowledge Solutions, is now closed to the public, after nearly a year and a half of operation. We will be donating our time, services, and resources that we were spending on Profiling-L, to where we feel there will be a better use for them, including the continued discussion of evidence based criminal profiling in a professional setting through the Academy of Behavioral Profiling We are very disappointed that we will no longer be able to offer the list to the public, as we really wanted to have a criminal profiling discussion list that everyone could participate in and benefit from. For a time that happened. But due to the amount of off-topic posts and the unprofessional conduct of some listmembers, it had reached the point that those with professional interests and questions were no longer posting. Knowledge Solutions founded and maintained the publicly available Profiling-L Discussion List in the hopes of providing a good forum for the debate of issues related to criminal profiling. There was no other forum at the time in which criminal profiling could be openly discussed. We felt that the list served that need at first. As issues arose, we did our best to keep it on track and on task. However, for quite some time now, we have felt that it has been for the most part not on track and not on task, and that many list members were blatantly ignoring the list guidelines (see below) in spite of our best efforts. Many list members felt this way as well and wrote us expressing their concerns.

Section 1: Console Tab : Logging, Profiling and CommandLine (Part II)
Overview of Console Tab This tab is mainly used for logging. It also can be used as CommandLine window (like immediate window in Microsoft Visual Studio) while you are debugging the Javascript. It can be used for monitoring the execution of Javascript code by using Profiling service. The following topic will be covered in this section.
  • Logging in Firebug (with String Substitution pattern ) Grouping the logs or messages console.dir and console.dirxml Timing ( Measuring the time of your code) Javascript Profiler (An introduction in this tutorial, the details will be covered in next tutorial.)
#1. Logging in Firebug There are five types of logging in Firebug.
  • console.log : Write a message without icon. console.debug : Writes a message to the console, including a hyperlink to the line where it was called
Example Code: <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"> console.log('This is log message'); console.debug('This is debug message'); console.error('This is error message'); console.info('This is info message'); console.warn('This is warning message'); </script>

Profiling Perl
by Simon Cozens
June 24, 2004 Everyone wants their Perl code to run faster. Unfortunately, without understanding why the code is taking so long to start with, it's impossible to know where to start optimizing it. This is where "profiling" comes in; it lets us know what our programs are doing. We'll look at why and how to profile programs, and then what to do with the profiling information once we've got it.
Why Profile?
There's nothing worse than setting off a long-running Perl program and then not knowing what it's doing. I've recently been working on a new, mail-archiving program for the perl.org mailing lists, and so I've had to import a load of old email into the database. Here's the code I used to do this: It's an innocent little program it looks for all the files in the perl6-language directory whose names are purely numeric (this is how messages are stored in an ezmlm archive), reads the contents of the files into memory with File::Slurp::read_file , and then uses Email::Store to put them into a database. You start it running, and come back a few hours later and it's done.

It consists of a kernel patch that implements a number of profiling data collection mechanisms, as well as a device driver for controlling them, plus the user level command kernprof that allows a user to configure and control the kernel profiling facilities. At this time it also includes a small gcc patch that is necessary to build correct i386 kernels when profiling is compiled in (see the FAQ for details). To use the kernel profiler, download and apply the kernel patch as normal to your linux source tree. Version 0.11 patches the 2.4.16 and 2.4.17 kernels, and version 0.12 patches the 2.4.19, 2.4.18, 2.5.3, 2.5.8, 2.5.10, and 2.5.17 kernels. Patches are also available against various earlier kernel versions (found in the download/old subdirectory). This patch supports the following architectures: i386, ia64, sparc64, and mips64. Version 0.12 of the kernel patch requires the use of the kernprof command version 1.5; version 0.11 of the kernel patch requires the use of kernprof command version 1.4; version 0.10 of the kernel patch requires the use of kernprof command version 1.3. The earlier version 0.9.x requires the use of kernprof command version 1.2.x. $ cd linux

Critical Issues Home About Us Newsblog Site Map ... Education News Enter your search terms Web Ethnicmajority.com Submit search form Racial Profilin g of African, Hispanic (Latino), and Asian Americans What is racial profiling? The most common example of police racial profiling is "DWB", otherwise known as "driving while black". This refers to the practice of police targeting African Americans for traffic stops because they believe that African Americans are more likely to be engaged in criminal activity. While racial profiling is illegal, a 1996 Supreme Court decision allows police to stop motorists and search their vehicles if they believe trafficking illegal drugs or weapons. More traffic stops leads to more arrests, which further skews the racial profiling statistics against African Americans. Studies have shown that African Americans are far more likely to be stopped and searched. Are African Americans really committing more crimes or are they just caught more often because the police target them? This is a vicious cycle that even the strictest law enforcement advocates would admit is patently unfair. What can you do if you are stopped?

Ant profiling
Eugene is trying to write an ant profiler . His preliminary results are encouraging but I believe he's only solved the easy problem. In my experience, ant builds are not slow because they spend too much time in targets (this time is usually incompressible) but because identical targets get run multiple times or or the same files get processed several times. Here are a few steps that might lead to a good ant profiler:
  • Provide a way to visualize the graph of dependencies. This should be easy enough: parse all the targets and their depends clauses and show a graphical view of what it looks like. With some simple graph algorithms, it's also pretty easy to point out extraneous and redundant paths. Add finer-grained support in ant 's listeners.
This requires active participation from the ant project but I think it would be worth it. The current listeners are fairly primitive and do not provide any insight on the internals of each task. What I believe would be interesting is for each task to implement an interface that lets observers know when a certain file is being processed and when the resulting file is starting and finishing to be generated. With support for such listeners, it would be trivial to see that the file "A.java" is being processed twice even in the most complex builds.
    Start identifying a few "

Go Wireless Get daily political updates on your handheld computer. Terrorist Profiling, Version 2.0 By Shane Harris National Journal Friday, Oct. 20, 2006 The government's top intelligence agency is building a computerized system to search very large stores of information for patterns of activity that look like terrorist planning. The system, which is run by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, is in the early research phases and is being tested, in part, with government intelligence that may contain information on U.S. citizens and other people inside the country. TIPS: Dead Or Alive? A document describing a new terrorist-detection system called Tangram contains a sentence that has privacy and terrorism experts' eyes popping. In a section about various systems that store potentially useful intelligence nuggets, including food-security and consumer-complaint hotlines, is this: "New systems, such as the TIPS system, through which reports of suspicious activity from transportation workers and dockworkers are filed, are examples of new information sources where fragmentary tips might be discovered."

    I. INTRODUCTION On June 13, 2000, the Federal Trade Commission (hereinafter "FTC" or "Commission") issued Online Profiling: A Report to Congress The report described the nature of online profiling, consumer privacy concerns about these practices, and the Commission's efforts to address these concerns. The Commission did not make recommendations at that time, because a dialogue with the network advertising industry regarding self-regulatory principles was still ongoing. The Commission promised, however, to supplement its report with specific recommendations to Congress after it had an opportunity to fully consider the industry's self-regulatory proposals and how they interrelate with the Commission's previous views and recommendations on online privacy generally. This report presents the Commission's recommendations.
