General note
1.) if you run the remote profiler, the filter settings in the eclipse environment are not taken into account. Instead you must provide the filter settings in the start command of your application server. You do this by adding an environment variable PROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER to the startup command of your aplication, see below. 2.) Setting up the profiler package filters (in general) You must define the environment variable PROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER as shown below in the examples for tomcat, jboss, weblogic and resin. General important Note: The environment variable contains following parts: the application starting class (A ) inclusion filters (P ) exclusion filters (M ) You must provide exactly one starting class, but you can have multiple inclusion and exclusion filters. The parts MUST be separated by the OS specific path.separator, i.e. ":" for unix or ";" for WINDOWS platforms) example package filter setting for WINDOWS: -DPROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER=Aorg.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap;Msun.;Pmy.company.classes. example package filter setting for UNIX/LINUX: -DPROFILER_PACKAGE_FILTER=Aorg.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap:Msun.:Pmy.company.classes. In the examples below we provide the WINDOWS style. Please take care to use the LINUX/UNIX style if that aplies to you.

      Task-Based Profiling
Select from several common profiling tasks, such as standard CPU or memory profiling, or simple monitoring. The options have been preset to default values by experts; you can customize settings for a specific application. You can store data for offline processing by saving snapshots of collected results, and you precisely control the amount of overhead the profiler imposes, and therefore analyze the application while it runs at almost full speed.
      Heap Walker
Use the Heap Walker to evaluate the Java heap contents and to identify unnecessary references that cause memory leaks. You can browse classes and instances of classes on the heap, fields of each instance or class, and references to each instance. Video: Profiling Points, Drill Down Graph, Heap Walker

Using other profilers this was not possible since they kept on crashing. Using YourKit this was amazingly easy. It just ran in the background and I gathered statistics at certain moments in time and then compared them against each-other. YourKit is a really nice profiler and I use it now." Geert Bevin, Lead developer of RIFE web application framework
With YourKit solutions, both CPU and memory profiling have come to the highest professional level, where one can profile even huge applications with maximum productivity and zero overhead. There are several, recent innovations to profiling that have gained well-deserved popularity among professional Java developers, both in big and small companies. YourKit is the standard-setter in the evolution of profiling tools.

Using the New MySQL Query Profiler
One of the great things about MySQL is the superior innovation model that’s used to deliver database server software. Rather than relying solely on internal engineers who create and maintain a piece of software (as in a traditional software company), MySQL partners with the millions of active users across the world who take advantage of the open source model and daily extend the MySQL server to do new and pioneering things. These innovations can then be submitted to MySQL AB, tested, validated, and rolled into the database server so everyone can benefit from the creativity of the very active MySQL community. An example of this model in action is the recent release of a new SQL diagnostic facility that assists in the debugging and analysis of running SQL - the SQL Profiler. The new profiler became available in the 5.0.37 version of the MySQL Community Server and was created and submitted by Jeremy Cole of Proven Scaling (
