Classification and external resources ICD C ICD OMIM ... MeSH Prostate cancer is a disease in which cancer develops in the prostate , a gland in the male reproductive system . It occurs when cells of the prostate mutate and begin to multiply out of control. These cells may spread ( metastasize ) from the prostate to other parts of the body, especially the bones and lymph nodes . Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating erectile dysfunction and other symptoms Rates of prostate cancer vary widely across the world. Although the rates vary widely between countries, it is least common in South and East Asia, more common in Europe, and most common in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society , prostate cancer is least common among Asian men and most common among black men, with figures for white men in-between. However, these high rates may be affected by increasing rates of detection.

Prostate cancer is an uncontrolled (malignant) growth of cells in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death of males in the U.S. Prostate cancer is often initially suspected because of an abnormal PSA blood test or a hard nodule (lump) felt on the prostate gland during a routine rectal examination.

Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in American males and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in males. Prostate cancers have several distinctive properties. These tumors often grow very slowly in the prostate. In fact, the majority of men with prostate cancer will not have metastases to other organs and will not die of prostate cancer. However, when prostate tumor cells do escape from the prostate, they frequently form metastases in the spine and these metastatic colonies often grow rapidly and are life-threatening. Early prostate cancers rarely have the capacity to metastasize. It often takes years or decades for the tumors to develop a series of mutations that allow the cells to form metastases outside of the prostate. Our research on prostate cancer has the following goals:
1. To understand why prostate tumors tend to grow slowly in the prostate yet rapidly when they metastasize to the spine.
Certain tumors tend to metastasize preferentially to particular organs. Prostate cancer is a superb example of this kind of behavior as prostate tumors most commonly metastasize to bone, especially to the vertebrae of the spinal column. Our earliest work on this tumor was designed to ask whether there were factors in bone that could stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells. Work done by Marcela Chackal-Roy, a graduate student in our lab, showed that bone marrow did indeed contain factors that stimulated the growth of metastatic prostate cancer cells. This work revealed suggested that the reason why prostate cancer metastases grow so rapidly in the spine is because of these bone-derived growth factors. (Stimulation of human prostatic carcinoma cell growth by factors present in human bone marrow. Chackal-Roy M, Niemeyer C, Moore M, Zetter BR J Clin Invest 1989; 84: 43-50)

      Prostate Cancer
Unfortunately, 1 out of every 9 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in men and, fortunately, one of the most treatable malignancies if detected at an early stage. If prostate cancer is diagnosed early, before it has spread outside of the prostate, it can be cured in the large majority of cases. If men receive a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and regular digital rectal examinations (DRE) of the prostate by a physician, prostate cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage in most instances. The American Cancer Society and the American Urological Association recommend that a PSA test and DRE be performed annually for men over the age of 50 if they are otherwise in good health. African American men or men with a family history of prostate cancer should begin their annual prostate evaluations when they are in their 40's. In recent years, PSA testing has become somewhat controversial in regard to the appropriate normal range for PSA and to the question of whether a low PSA definitively indicates the absence of prostate cancer. Urologists at the Maryland Prostate Center counsel patients on the intricacies and uncertainties regarding PSA testing. PSA values are adjusted for a patient's age and in some instances, when necessary, the PSA is compared to the prostate size to determine the likelihood of prostate cancer and give the patient enough information to decide whether he should consider undergoing a prostate biopsy. PSA testing is not "cookbook medicine". It requires use of both "art and science" and urologists at the Maryland Prostate Center use these approaches when counseling patients.

Are you a man who still has his prostate gland? Even if it was removed, or irradiated... reading this entire article might save your life; or, save you from a very painful ending to that life. The MAIN PURPOSE of this piece you are reading is to HELP MEN STAY HEALTHY; to stay alive, to not suffer a miserable death!!! The SECONDARY PURPOSE is to give you enough facts to help you make your own decisions about your health, in regards to your prostate gland. The PRIMARY information in this long article is for men who either don't have PC; or, are in the early stages; or are worrying about PC. This article contains a very considerable amount of information about prostate health and cancer (PC), MUCH of which is rather difficult to find. However informative it might be, it is also a chronicle of my personal experience. Nothing is glossed over.. nor held back. So, to state what should be obvious here, I did have prostate cancer. 'Did' is past tense. My surgery was in May 2003. I was 66 years old. Officially I am not 'cured' until May 2013, the tenth anniversary of the surgery, providing my PSA is still quite low at that time. So far, since the surgery, my PSA is virtually un-measurable. ***The gland is the PROSTATE.....NOT 'PROSTRATE'***

    Definition
Prostate cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in a man's prostate gland. The prostate gland is part of the reproductive system of men. It is a doughnut-shaped gland located between the base of the penis and the bladder. It surrounds the urethra, which is the tube through which urine and semen pass. The prostate makes the fluid that nourishes and carries sperm. Prostate cancer has become the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men in the US. It usually grows slowly. Men who have it often die from other causes before the cancer kills them. Still, prostate cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer death in American men. The prostate cancer death rate is especially high among African American men.

The Best Prostate Cancer Treatment Alternatives
Posted in Prostate Cancer Treatment Treatment By George Anderson Prostate cancer is a very common problem with men over the age of 80 and it starts becoming frequent with men over 50. By the time they are 80, almost half will have some form of prostate cancer which is not noticeable. Even though it is dangerous, just like any other cancer type, prostate cancer is very seldom the cause of death for the men who have it. Although this is such a common illness, doctors are still uncertain of the precise causes for prostate cancer. Ethnicity is one of the factors that offers some differentiation, with black men the highest risk and Asian men the lowest. Curing prostate cancer is possible, but the condition has to be detected in the early stages. Many men do not even seek medical advice when the symptoms are present, partly because they are very similar to those of another disease: BPH or benign prostatic hypertrophy. Most men will experience difficulties while urinating, noticing a weak or intermittent flow of urine. Other symptoms include urgent needs to urinate or the need to wake up several times a night to do this. Some patients also observe a dribbling of urine after and even before urinating.
