A diagnosis like cancer often causes panic, primarily due to the lack of knowledge and fear of the unknown. However, great strides have been made in the treatment of prostate cancer. As never before, you have options, and members of our prostate cancer community who " have been there, done that " will universally recommend that you move beyond the panic stage and start to gain knowledge. Knowledge is power. We recommend that you take your time, do your research and arrive at the best treatment decision for you and your family based on the characteristics of your total health situation Be aware that some medical specialist may steer you in the direction of their specialty and often will understate the risk involved with their treatment of choice. Urologist tends to favor surgical option, radiation therapist favor radiation, and medical oncologist may focus on Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) and/or Chemotherapy. Sitting in the doctor's consultation room with your spouse or other supportive person(s), a patient will better understand treatment information that your physician is presenting

Prostate Cancer Survival Story There was a man named John,
    At hospital prostate was gone.
    What am I to do,
    Tell it to friend Lou.
You will have to train again,
During which you will suffer pain.
In the end it will all work out,
That is what life is all about.
(A poem written for me by my friend Louis)
On May 18, 2005 I was notified that I had Prostate Cancer. On July 18th I had a Radical Prostatectomy (Surgical removal of the prostate gland). Six weeks later on August 28th my wife and I celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary at a local restaurant with about 40 friends. On September 23rd, two months after the surgery, I got the results of my first post surgical blood test - I was cancer free!(Perhaps not so - see my March, 2007 entry - my PSA level has reappeared) Three months after the surgery I could do 15 partial sit ups, 10 full sit ups and go for a 45 minute bike including pedaling up a steep hill without discomfort.
This is my Prostate Cancer Survival Story. If you have been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and have elected to treat it using Surgery you may find this story useful. I am 64 years old and in good condition. I am about 15 lb overweight.

The causes of prostate cancer are not well understood. Doctors cannot explain why one man gets prostate cancer and another does not. However, studies show that the following risk factors are associated with prostate cancer:
    • Age. Prostate cancer is found mainly in men over the age of 55, and the average age of diagnosis is 70. Race. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among Hispanic men. It is much more common in African American men than white men. It is less common in Asian and American Indian men.

Prostate cancer is the most prevalent male cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the United States. A man with prostate cancer may not have symptoms at first, but the earliest signs of the disease tend to be those of lower urinary tract obstruction - hesitancy, post-void urine dribbling, decreased force of stream, and the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. The prostate gland surrounds the male urethra, the tube that urine passes through from the bladder to the outside. If cancer grows in the prostate, it squeezes the urethra causing an obstruction that allows less and less urine to pass, and the bladder has to work harder to force the urine out. Your doctor or urologist diagnoses prostate cancer through a rectal examination that shows an enlarged prostate but will also test the blood level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) as an additional sign. PSA levels greater than 10mg/mL indicate a sixty-six percent chance that prostate cancer is present. For men with a non-metastasized tumor (a cancer that has not spread to other organs in the body), the goal of treatment is cure, usually by surgery. Surgery - called radical prostatectomy - involves two approaches: retropubic and perineal. With retropubic prostatectomy, an incision (cut) is made in the lower part of the stomach above the pelvic bone, and for perineal prostatectomy an incision (cut) is made through the perineum (in front of the anus).

Cabell Huntington Hospital is the first hospital in the Huntington area to acquire the da Vinci Surgical System, a state-of-the-art robotic platform designed to enable complex minimally invasive surgery with greater precision. The hospital will initially utilize this technology for robotic prostatectomy, a procedure that offers prostate cancer patients significant benefits over traditional open prostatectomy. Over time, use of the system will be expanded to include general surgical and gynecologic applications. Performed through five small incisions in the abdomen, robotic prostatectomy generally results in shorter hospital stays, less pain, less risk of infection, faster recoveries and more complete eradication of cancer than traditional prostate surgery. Because the da Vinci System allows for greater visualization, increased range of motion and enhanced precision, surgeons are better able to identify and avoid muscles and nerves that control sexual function and urination, greatly reducing the risk of impotence and incontinence. Patients who undergo robotic prostatectomy also tend to experience less blood loss and require less anesthesia. "The advantages of robotic surgery are enormous for patients with prostate cancer," said Louis R. Molina, MD, a urologist with University Urological Associates and Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. "This is a significant milestone in terms of surgical advancement in the Huntington area, cancer treatment and improved quality of life for our patients. No longer will these patients be required to travel long distances to receive the most advanced care and treatment available."

By Margarita Snegireva. Researchers found out that the level of sex hormones in the blood has no connection with the risk of prostate cancer A collaborative analysis of 18 prospective studies deflated the hypothesis that prostate cancer is driven by endogenous sex hormones, according to Andrew Roddam , D.Phil., of the University of Oxford , and colleagues. "Circulating concentrations of androgens or estradiol do not appear to be associated with the risk of prostate cancer," Dr. Roddam and colleagues concluded online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute The specific causes of prostate cancer remain unknown. A man's risk of developing prostate cancer is related to his age, genetics, race, diet, lifestyle, medications, and other factors. The primary risk factor is age. Prostate cancer is uncommon in men less than 45, but becomes more common with advancing age. The average age at the time of diagnosis is 70. However, many men never know they have prostate cancer. Autopsy studies of Chinese, German, Israeli, Jamaican, Swedish, and Ugandan men who died of other causes have found prostate cancer in thirty percent of men in their 50s, and in eighty percent of men in their 70s. In the year 2005 in the United States, there were an estimated 230,000 new cases of prostate cancer and 30,000 deaths due to prostate cancer. A man's genetic background contributes to his risk of developing prostate cancer. This is suggested by an increased incidence of prostate cancer found in certain racial groups, in identical twins of men with prostate cancer, and in men with certain genes. In the United States, prostate cancer more commonly affects black men than white or Hispanic men, and is also more deadly in black men. Men who have a brother or father with prostate cancer have twice the usual risk of developing prostate cancer. Studies of twins in Scandinavia suggest that forty percent of prostate cancer risk can be explained by inherited factors. However, no single gene is responsible for prostate cancer; many different genes have been implicated. Two genes (
