John R. Lee, MD some testosterone. This finding raises several interesting points. One is that medicine has made no real progress in treating prostate cancer by androgen reduction since 1941. Second, flutamide has been under study since at least 1989, and recommended for prostate cancer treatment for over five years. Why has it taken this long to find that this form of androgen blockade has no benefit in treating metastatic prostate cancer? Why did it take five years for conventional medicine to discover that it had embraced a worthless drug? Perhaps this recent study will stimulate a re-examination of the conventional hypothesis concerning the role of testicular hormones. Orchiectomy removes not only testicular testosterone production but also its production of estradiol. Why choose testosterone as the probable cause of prostate cancer? Is it not clear that the time of life when testosterone is at its highest level (around age 18) is the age when prostate cancer is least likely? Why does prostate cancer occur so often in aging men? In test mammals, pre-treatment with testosterone prevents successful transplantation of prostate cancer cells. Testosterone given to test mammals after successful transplantation of prostate cancer tissue will slow tumor growth. In men, the incidence of prostate cancer and prostate hypertrophy correlates better with low testosterone levels, rather than with higher levels. It is time for a new hypothesis.

Are you a man who still has his prostate gland? Even if it was removed, or irradiated... reading this entire article might save your life; or, save you from a very painful ending to that life. The MAIN PURPOSE of this piece you are reading is to HELP MEN STAY HEALTHY; to stay alive, to not suffer a miserable death!!! The SECONDARY PURPOSE is to give you enough facts to help you make your own decisions about your health, in regards to your prostate gland. The PRIMARY information in this long article is for men who either don't have PC; or, are in the early stages; or are worrying about PC. This article contains a very considerable amount of information about prostate health and cancer (PC), MUCH of which is rather difficult to find. However informative it might be, it is also a chronicle of my personal experience. Nothing is glossed over.. nor held back. So, to state what should be obvious here, I did have prostate cancer. 'Did' is past tense. My surgery was in May 2003. I was 66 years old. Officially I am not 'cured' until May 2013, the tenth anniversary of the surgery, providing my PSA is still quite low at that time. So far, since the surgery, my PSA is virtually un-measurable. ***The gland is the PROSTATE.....NOT 'PROSTRATE'***

It varies in size according to the patient’s age. It is located under the bladder, in front of the rectum. Contrary to a generally accepted idea, the prostate is not directly involved during the sexual act; it does not intervene in the libido’s mechanisms, or in those of the erection. The prostate takes part in the ejaculation mechanism, it secretes the major part of the seminal liquid which is used as a means of transportation of sperm.

The Prostate
The prostate is a gland in a man's reproductive system. It makes and stores seminal fluid, a milky fluid that nourishes sperm. This fluid is released to form part of semen. The prostate is about the size of a walnut. It is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds the upper part of the urethra, the tube that empties urine from the bladder. If the prostate grows too large, the flow of urine can be slowed or stopped. To work properly, the prostate needs male hormones (androgens). Male hormones are responsible for male sex characteristics. The main male hormone is testosterone, which is made mainly by the testicles. Some male hormones are produced in small amounts by the adrenal glands

Prostate Cancer
The Paradox of Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer, meaning cancer of the prostate gland, is a common adenocarcinoma in men. The probability of getting prostate cancer rises with age. It is generally treated by surgically removing the small prostate gland or with radiation. It is generally detected by high PSA levels and/or by surgical biopsies. If a person over 70 years old is diagnosed with prostate cancer, many doctors don't even bother to treat the cancer. Prostate cancer is so slow growing it is highly likely the man will die of something else before he dies of cancer. It is generally believed that by the time symptoms of prostate cancer are observed by the patient, the cancer has spread beyond the prostate gland. In other words, unless the patient was proactive in getting his PSA levels checked, meaning the patient had his PSA level checked before symptoms appeared, it is likely the cancer had already spread beyond the prostate gland. Is it necessary to have the prostate gland removed? That is where the paradox of prostate cancer begins. If the cancer has already spread outside of the prostate area, surgery is of little or no value. Once the cancer has spread it may become fast growing and may have spread to vital organs. By this time, the slow growing cancer in the prostate area is no longer of any concern, it is the cancer in other areas that are of concern. Thus, if the cancer has already spread, surgery is of virtually no use.

edit Overview
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men (not including non-melanoma skin cancers, which are rarely serious). It causes significant illness and mortality.
edit The Prostate
Location of the prostate gland The prostate gland is an organ present only in males. It lies just below the bladder, and the urethra (the tube that carries urine) runs directly through it (although in some other mammals, the urethra runs around, rather than through, the prostate ). This fact is important in explaining many of the symptoms of the disease. The gland itself is part of the male reproduction system and participates in semen production. It is dependent on testosterone and other male hormones.
edit Epidemiology
The primary risk factors for prostate cancer are:
  • Age: Prostate cancer is a disease primarily of older men. Most cases are diagnosed in men over 65 years old. Race: Prostate cancer is more common in African-Americans than in other American ethnic groups.

As the second leading cause of male cancer death in the United States, prostate cancer will claim more than 40,000 lives this year alone, according to American Cancer Society estimates. The American Cancer Society also estimates that this year about 189,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. A new procedure called brachytherapy has been developed in which tiny radioactive seeds of Palladium-103 are injected into the prostate with hollow needles. Ultrasound guides the physician as to placement of the seeds. The seeds deliver high doses of radiation within the prostate, resulting in less damage to surrounding healthy cells. The seeds, which are about the size of a grain of rice, emit radiation for several months, then become inactive. They do not have to be removed.
Prostate cancer research presented at the American Urological Association meeting in 1997 reported that seed implants are just as effective as other treatment options for men with early-stage prostate cancer. Long-term follow-up of patients treated with radioactive seeds shows a 90% disease-free survival rate, and lower complication rates than surgery (radical prostatectomy) and external beam radiation. Breast Cancer
Radiation oncologists at Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre (TSRCC), the comprehensive cancer center in Toronto, Canada, in September have successfully completed the first breast cancer treatments in the world using small beads of palladium.

December 2002, revised June 2004 An enlarged prostate – known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH – is caused by an overgrowth of prostate cells. This enlargement constricts the urethra so the flow of urine is reduced, making it increasingly difficult to empty the bladder.
The prostate gland
The prostate is a gland about the size of a walnut that is only present in men. It is located just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine flows from the bladder and out through the penis. Please see the diagram, overleaf. One of the main functions of the prostate is to produce an important liquefying component of semen, which allows the sperm to move freely. The gland is divided into three zones, peripheral, transitional and central. With BPH, it is the central part where overgrowth of cells takes place.
