Quakers History: How the Quakers established themselves in the New World
In 1638 a colony of Swedes settled on Christiana Creek, in the present State of Delaware. Governor Kieft, of New Amsterdam, considered this an intrusion on his territory, and, as a check to their aggression, rebuilt the previously abandoned Fort Nassau, below the present Camden. The Swedes gradually extended their settlements, the territory occupied reaching from Cape Henlopen to a point opposite Trenton. Their governor built a fort and a residence on the island of Tinicum, below Philadelphia. In 1655 the Swedes were attached by the Dutch, and their forts taken. The most of them continued on their estates, under Dutch authority. The territory of New Jersey was granted in 1664 to Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. Berkeley sold his share in 1674 to John Fenwick, in trust for Edward Byllinge, who subsequently assigned his claim to William Penn and two other Quakers.
The province was then divided, Carteret receiving the eastern portion, and the Quaker assignees the western portion, on the Delaware. It was in this way that William Penn first became interested in the settlement of America. As two colonies, Massachusetts and Maryland, had already been formed through the desire for religious liberty, it occurred to him to establish a refuge in the New World for the persecuted sect of which he was a member. This was first attempted in West Jersey. A free constitution was given to the settlers, granting important privileges of civil and religious liberty. Quakers were specially recommended to take advantage of it, and more than four hundred emigrated to the province in 1677. In 1682, William Penn and eleven others purchased East Jersey, so that the whole province then came under Quaker control. Robert Barclay, author of the "Apology for Quakers," was appointed governor for life.

What are "Quakers"? Quakers are members of the Religious Society of Friends, a faith that emerged as a new Christian denomination in England during a period of religious turmoil in the mid-1600's, and is practiced today, in a variety of forms, around the world. To members of this religion, the words "Quaker"and "Friend" mean the same thing.
Quakers are: an active, involved faith-based community living in the modern world. We are a diverse people consisting of several distinct branches. We continue our traditional testimonies of pacifism, social equality, integrity, and simplicity, which we interpret and express in a variety of ways. Today, many Friends include stewardship of our planet as one of our testimonies.
Quakers are not: Amish, Anabaptists, Shakers or Puritanswe come from a separate tradition than these other groups. We mostly don't dress like the man on the box of oats anymore, and today we hardly ever call people "thee."

What they didn't know was that their meeting had come to the attention of the U.S. military. A secret 400-page Defense Department document obtained by NBC News lists the Lake Worth meeting as a “threat” and one of more than 1,500 “suspicious incidents” across the country over a recent 10-month period. “This peaceful, educationally oriented group being a threat is incredible,” says Evy Grachow, a member of the Florida group called The Truth Project.

Welcome to the Quaker United Nations Office! Peaceable Kingdom by Quaker artist Edward Hicks.
Over the past sixty years, Quakers have sought to support the work of the UN and its vision, like that of Edward Hicks, of a world where opposing forces could live together in peace. The Quaker United Nations Office, located in Geneva and New York, represents Quakers through Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC). Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945, Quakers have shared that organisation's aims and supported its efforts to abolish war and promote peaceful resolution of conflicts, human rights, economic justice and good governance. FWCC, which links Quakers around the world, has had consultative status with the United Nations' Economic and Social Council as an international non-governmental organisation since 1948. In July 2002, FWCC was moved from Special Status to General Status. By this move, the UN has recognized that Friends do work of importance in a very broad range of international concerns. This status allows the QUNO staff to attend many UN meetings, to receive documents and to make written and oral statements and to suggest agenda items to the Economic and Social Council. QUNO staff also work with other multilateral organisations, such as the World Trade Organisation, International Labour Organisation, World Bank, International Monetary Fund and others relevant to our areas of concern.

A group of Quakers felt that the cause of the Revolution was too great to ignore. They were "read out of meeting."
Quakers are pacifists. However, during the Revolution, several state militias sent out a call for help. Various Quakers were inspired to assist in the conflict, even though they knew they would be "read out of meeting," or expelled from the main community of Quakers. The group of approximately 200 called themselves Free Quakers and founded a meeting house of their own in 1783. After its life as a meeting house, the building was successively a school, an apprentice library, a plumbing warehouse, and headquarters for the Junior League of Philadelphia. Today it is open to the public. Inside, are two original benches and an original window exists nearly intact. The balcony which looks as if it belonged to the original structure, was actually constructed when the meeting house was restored in the 1960s. Among the exhibits is the 5-pointed star tissue pattern that Betsy Ross used in making the first American flag. A guide will demonstrate how to cut a 5-pointed star in a single snip. Visit the

    Women's Goals and Programs
for the 21st Century * A Work In Progress *
On June 30, 1998, Quaker women first met in the Women's Center of the Friends General Conference Gathering in River Falls, Wisconsin to articulate goals for the Women's Movement in the next century.
Each of the approximately thirty women spoke of her concerns and hopes for the future. Among us were mothers, grandmothers, professionals and non-professionals of all kinds. Some had thought about this for a long time and others spoke from the moment. We remembered the history, the successes, the failures, and the methods of our Quaker women ancestors.
The women who offered these ideas expected that additions and/or deletions would be made at the 1999 Gathering. In the intervening year many Friends read these goals, made constructive comments, and on July 6, 1999, Quaker women from around the North American continent met again at the Friends General Conference Gathering in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to affirm what follows.
We take our values as Quaker women into the world at large in order to lessen the present high level of social anxiety felt by women.
