Physics Help and Math Help - Physics Forums Physics Quantum Physics PDA View Full Version : Learning QM and the math required. DisplayAds("Top"); ChemGuy I am trying to learn/relearn QM after a lengthy layoff (10+ years). I have had calc and diff EQ and partial Diff EQ but to be honest I don't remember the details anymore. For example I don't remember any of the standard solutions to integrals. I understand the principles but am just out of practice of actually doing it. I can follow along in a text ok but don't ask me to independantly solve the problems... the memory is just not there. I had actually taken a grad class or two on Quantum Chemistry so I know I could do it at one time!
Here is the question. Is it possible to learn QM and QFT principles without the detail technical ability? I have access to text books but it would take forever to go back over them to bring myself back up to math speed. I am not looking to be a master on these subjects but I am trying to be able to understand grad level discussions. Thanks.
Ed Los Bobos First thing is to choose right books concentrating on physics and not in linear algebra or integrals, for example the green textbook by Dirac (foundations of qm or something?).

Division Contact: James Faller Bose-Einstein Condensation The discovery of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) by JILA scientists in June 1995 has opened up whole new areas of research. JILA is a joint venture of NIST and the University of Colorado. In BEC, atoms cooled to temperatures as low as 10 nanokelvin undergo a phase transition in which a large percentage of the atoms all take on exactly the same quantum wave function, becoming completely indistinguishable from one another. Preliminary studies on low-lying phonon-like excitations will develop into measurements on vortices and viscosity. Thermal behavior near the critical temperature and the kinetics of condensate formation are also promising topics for study. We also will explore the implications of condensate formation for precision metrology, including theoretically predicted coherent atom beams, dubbed bosers. Contact: Eric A. Cornell

Press Release Graz team sheds new light on dark states another Austrian breakthrough in quantum physics
Light shines through opaque materials if certain conditions are met. By establishing the existence of another such condition, scientists at the Graz University of Technology have created additional possibilities for using light to control revolutionary new optical components. The project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), has experimentally demonstrated an effect previously only known from theoretical calculations. It adds another impressive achievement to the recent run of success marked up by Austrian quantum physicists - one that would not have been possible without long-term support from the FWF. Materials absorb light when their electrons react to the frequency of light waves. The light energy is transformed by the material into kinetic energy. However, if the oscillations of the electrons are suppressed the light proceeds on its way unimpeded - the material becomes transparent.

Quantum physics is the branch of physics that deals with the behaviour of those cute little wiggly thingies you find in water with the googly eyes that go around and around in circles saying "mi-mi-mi-mi-mi". Please be aware that this is an interacting category, and its content is highly probabilistic in nature. Quantum Mechanics are the techies of the itty bitty realm; when quanta break, quantum mechanics are there to fix them.

    Quantum physics and genetics
When you observe very tiny things, strange things begin to happen. At a fine grain, beneath what you can see at a microscopic level, even smaller than individual genes and molecules, there lies a world of subatomic particles. At that level, there is no longer a meaningful distinction between an observer and the thing being observed. What does that mean? When you measure something, you are using a probe, which is made of matter. (Or, when you measure the amount of light reflected from the object you use a light meter.) But according to quantum physics , at the subatomic level, matter and light both consist of waves which don't fully exist (as particles) until they are measured. And this works both ways. The surface of the measurement device (or light meter), and the thing being measured, both consist of discrete waves. And so neither the surface of the measurement device nor the "observed entity" fully exist until the measurement event occurs.

HOW QUANTUM PHYSICS DISTRACTS YOU FROM THE TRUTH:
Uhh, what was the topic of this article again? Something like "Quantum physics," I vaguely seem to recall. Like, whatever. No one really knows what quantum physics is. A lot of it is numbers and shit made up by Professor Bleep Blorp Bleep . Quantum physics is the study of discrete numbers . It seeks to understand the balance of natural forces against an increasingly chaotic system of counting. It is especially concerned with exact value of a zillion , and is also represented by fractal modules. Currently, no uniform theory has yet to emerge. However, the theory is currently based on the Master Equation, which is as follows:
which is in practice simplified to:
E b s
where E is equatorial girth, b is for Belizian , and s stands for the Surreptitious constant (approximately 1.435 - the Golden Mean [oooh, ahhh]). Given this equation, one may determine the exact length of a fat man's stomach. No one is quite sure why this value is also applicable to studying incredibly pointless numbers, although several scientists have proposed that, "Maybe God just has a twisted sense of humor like that".

Scientists have discovered a way to manipulate quantum light, using a technology that could facilitate advanced computers and quantum teleportation. By successfully creating superposed light beams, the researchers were able to produce a state that is both “on” and “off” at the same time. Light beams that can be simultaneously on and off would be vital for the next-generation super computers. Using this new technology, computers could be much faster than current computers based on bits, which can only be either on or off. The "God Particle" -Holy Grail of Physics, has it been Found?
Scientists are racing to discover what is considered the “Holy Grail” of particle physics, the Higgs Boson particle. A myriad of top newspapers have been covering the unveiling of the world's largest particle accelerator, the large hadron collider (LHC) which cost the European Union $8 billion to build. The LHC is widely considered the best shot at finding the elusive particle. To find this very last piece of the field’s theoretical puzzle would mean a Noble Prize, and huge advancements in the field of physics. However, an unsettling rumor is spreading in the realm of physics. The mysterious particle may have already been found!
