41. Quilting With Children
Ideas, techniques, and resources for working with children in making quilts.
http://www.thecraftstudio.com/qwc/
My name is Heddi Craft and I am a teacher who has been making quilts with children for the past nine years. This page is designed to describe the projects I have organized and give you ideas, techniques, and resources for working with children in making quilts. Please note: Due to birth of my first child and the expected birth of my second, I don't currently have the time right now to keep this page up-to-date. Although the information here continues to be useful (I hope), I will not be revising or adding anything new for a while. I will still be happy to answer questions and would still love to hear from people using this information, however!
These pages assume you have some experience with sewing and/or quilting. There are several good books in the reading list if you are a beginner.
Useful Web Sites
My hope has been to make this page a comprehensive resource for anyone who wants to teach kids how to quilt! To that end, I've collected quite a few stories and pictures from other people who have made quilts with children.

42. AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILTING TRADITIONS
Thus by the time that early African American quilting became a tradition in and of itself, it was already a combination of textile traditions.

AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILTING TRADITIONS
Wahlman, p. 38 Loom house used by slaves on Melrose Plantation Interior of a loom house on Melrose Plantation The textile traditions of African peoples are less thoroughly documented than other aspects of folk art such as music, dance, or speech. However what is known can be traced back to the prominent influences of four civilizations of Central and West Africa: the Mande-speaking peoples (in the modern countries of Guinea, Mali, Senegal, and Burkino Faso); the Yoruba and Fon peoples (in the Republic of Benin and Nigeria); the Ejagham peoples (in Nigeria and Cameroons); and the Kongo peoples (in Zaire and Angola). Wahlman, p. 21 As slaves, and also their textiles, were traded heavily throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and the Southern United States, the traditions of each distinct region became intermixed. Thus by the time that early African American quilting became a tradition in and of itself, it was already a combination of textile traditions. The segments that follow are an overview of the general themes and patterns of quilting that have been influenced by African aesthetic, religious, and cultural traditions.

Cobble Quilt
I love the cobbles of Evesham Abbey, in England. I just see quilt inspiration here - very crumby and loose.
My brain has just been elsewhere lately. I've been struggling over the book. You know, The Book. The one that I'm finally going to write with the letter instructions etc. You've been hearing me say that for years, so your skepticism is understandable. But really, it's back on the front burner again. At least in my brain. I'm making decisions. What techniques go in the first book, which get saved for the second.... I've been having some fun playing lately with the string diamonds and 9-Patches, but they need to go in the second book and I need to focus on letters more. And then there's the conundrum of "how much to blog?" Just enough to keep your interest but not enough to give the game away. Just please bear with me. You'll hear about The Book more as things get jelled and I can reveal tidbits. Sorry, this isn't just me being mysterious, but also indecisive. I have the worst problems making my mind up about things, add that to the procrastination and you have trouble... On other matters, life is good. Some hotter weather and sunshine yesterday - woohoo. You know how that makes me happy even if I am just running errands. Nothing new going on here, pretty much same old, same old. Ya'll take care.

Image Quilting for Texture Synthesis and Transfer
Alexei A. Efros and Willian T. Freeman
We present a simple image-based method of generating novel visual appearance in which a new image is synthesized by stitching together small patches of existing images. We call this process Image Quilting . First, we use quilting as a fast and very simple texture synthesis algorithm which produces surprisingly good results for a wide range of textures. Second, we extend the algorithm to perform texture transfer rendering an object with a texture taken from a different object. More generally, we demonstrate how an image can be re-rendered in the style of a different image. The method works directly on the images and does not require 3D information.

Together these collections provide a glimpse into America's diverse quilting traditions. The quilt documentation from the Blue Ridge Parkway Folklife Project, an ethnographic field project conducted by the American Folklife Center in cooperation with the National Park Service, includes 229 photographs and 181 recorded interviews with six quiltmakers in Appalachian North Carolina and Virginia. These materials document quilts and quilting within the context of daily life and reflect a range of backgrounds, motivations, and aesthetic sensibilities. The materials presented from the Lands' End All-American Quilt Contest collection include images of approximately 180 winning quilts from across the United States. The collection represents a wide range of quiltmaking, from highly traditional to innovative, and the quilts pictured exhibit excellent design and technical skill in a variety of styles and materials. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning.
