Reading list: Irish edition
This week, I ate a slice of homemade cake containing Guinness ice cream, Bailey's Irish Cream ice cream, and Jameson's Irish Whiskey-infused whipped cream (thanks again, Erik!). I realized two things: 1. Cake is delicious (seriously, I had no idea), and 2. It's almost St. Patrick's Day! Hence, the Irish reading list...

The Printer to the Reader. It hath been an old saying that while two dogs do strive for a bone the third may come and carry it away. And this proverb may (as I fear) be well verified in me which take in hand the imprinting of this poetical Posy. For the case seemeth doubtful, and I will disclose my conjecture: Master H. W. in the beginning of this work hath in his letter written to the Readers cunningly discharged himself of any such misliking as the graver sort of grayhaired judgers might perhaps conceive in the publication of these pleasant Pamphlets. And next unto that learned preamble, the letter of G. T. (by whom as seemeth, the first copy hereof was unto the same H. W. delivered) doth with no less clerkly cunning seek to persuade the readers that he also would by no means have i t published. Now I fear very much all these words notwithstanding that these two gentlemen were of one assent compact to have it imprinted, and yet, finding by experience that nothing is so wellhandled nowadays but that some malicious minds may either take occasion to mislike it themselves or else find means to make it odious unto others, they have therefore each of them politicly prevented the danger of misreport, and suffered me the poor Printer to run away with the palm of so perilous a victory.

32. Summer Reading Hard To Find
Summer Reading lists let alone summer reading - are hard to find.

Summer Reading: It's not the destination, it's the journey
by Rosella Melanson
A news item about vending machines that sell books caught my eye last week. The machine actually prints and binds the title you select, while you wait. Coming to a beach or airport near you - all the books of the world available for your selection? Maybe.
There are still kinks to work out, say the inventors, and some publishers have said the quick binding process produces an inferior product with a short shelf life. Funny, that: I never heard anyone say, "Great book - I laughed, I cried, it changed my life - but the binding was awful".
The "maiden" run of the PerfectBook vending machine illustrates what will likely be the problem. As described in the firm's media release, "At 11:26 p.m. Central Time, a single copy of Robin Shamburg's novel, Mistress Ruby Ties It Together, slid out of a chute..." Yes, a book on sadomasochism. Not the Bible or Shakespeare or even Abbie Hoffman. "That's what Random House gave me," said the sheepish engineer.
The quest to find a good book reaches its peak around this time each year. There are likely more books than humans in the world, so the thing is in the selection. Summer reading lists abound, and yet some of us - for lack of planning - will be stuck reading whatever was on the drugstore rack or in the rented cottage this summer. (If you find yourself in St. Andrews without a book and ask for the bookshop in that vacation town, they direct you to the revolving bookrack at the corner pharmacy.)

Jump to: navigation search Here are some reading lists which you might find useful. While we include "official" lists such as the Field Exam Reading Lists , and the old Core Reading List , we also hope that this can be a space where people post their own reading lists. Caroline Haythornthwaite has suggested several types of annotations which would be useful to help people figure out what to read, and what might be interesting or relevant to their interests:
  • Short description of the article or book, with a summary of its contribution to the field.
    • Ideally this will help people figure out what articles ought to be cited when writing a paper on a certain topic.
Recommendations as to whether a book is so useful that it ought to be bought so you have it for constant reference, vs. simply checked out from the library and read.
    • For example, the book Organizations: Rational, Natural, and Open Systems by W. Richard Scott is a must-own for anybody interested in studying organizations.
Identification as to what level of expertise the book or article is most appropriate for.
