Classification and external resources ICD F ICD OMIM ... MeSH Rett syndrome/ disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is classified as a pervasive developmental disorder by the DSM-IV . Many argue that this is a misclassification just as it would be to include such disorders as fragile X syndrome tuberous sclerosis , or Down syndrome where one can see autistic features. The symptoms of this disorder are most easily confused with those of Angelman syndrome and autism . The clinical features include a deceleration of the rate of head growth (including microcephaly in some) and small hands and feet. Stereotypic, repetitive hand movements such as mouthing or wringing are also noted. Symptoms of the disorder include cognitive impairment and problems with socialization, the latter during the regression period. Socialization typically improves by the time they enter school. Girls with Rett syndrome are very prone to gastrointestinal disorders and up to 80% have seizures. They typically have no verbal skills, and about 50% of females are not

Infants with Rett syndrome seem to grow and develop normally at first, but then stop developing and even lose skills and abilities. For instance, they stop talking even though they used to say certain words. They lose their ability to walk properly. They stop using their hands to do things and often develop stereotyped hand movements , such as wringing, clapping, or patting their hands. Rett syndrome is considered one of the autism spectrum disorders . Most cases of Rett syndrome are caused by a mutation on the MECP2 gene, which is found on the X chromosome. For more information on the MECP2 gene, see the

Rett Syndrome
What It Is
Rett Syndrome is a debilitating, sometimes fatal, developmental disorder that gets its name from Andreas Rett, the Austrian doctor who first identified it in 1966. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says children afflicted with Rett Syndrome can have problems walking and speaking, may exhibit repetitive behaviors (usually involving their hands) and may also suffer from mental retardation. The condition presents itself in four stages, from "early onset," which could begin when children are as young as six months, to "late motor deterioration," which can render them nearly immobilized.
But research is making headway into the Rett Syndrome mystery. According to the International Rett Syndrome Association, in 1999, scientists discovered a genetic root to Rett Syndrome, with 80 percent of those who meet criteria for the disorder showing a mutation on an X chromosome. No one knows why the gene winds up flawed; the problem, it appears, occurs randomly.
How it's similar to classic autism
Children with Rett Syndrome exhibit symptoms similar to those diagnosed with classic autism, including toe-walking and lack of eye contact, with the condition's severity ranging from mild to severe, like their counterparts on the spectrum. They also have weakened muscle tone (aka hypotonia) and trouble interacting with others. Still, despite the similarities, there's enough dissension in the expert ranks that some believe Rett Syndrome shouldn't be classified as an autism spectrum disorder at all.

    From Autism Wiki
Jump to: navigation search Rett syndrome is classified under the Pervasive Developmental Disorders , but Rett syndrome has identifiable physical differences such as reduced muscle tone (causing the child to seem "floppy") and stereotyped hand movements such as wringing and waving. Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes severe disability in young children, mostly girls. After a period of relatively normal development, children with Rett syndrome lose skills such as language, play and hand use. The hallmark of the disorder is the development of midline hand wringing or patting movements that may be constant while the child is awake. Head growth, which is a reflection of brain growth, slows down in the 1st and 2nd years of life. Rett syndrome is caused by a mutation (unfavorable change in DNA) in a gene called MECP2 that is on the X chromosome. The mutation itself causes Rett syndrome, as well as other developmental disorders. The diagnosis of Rett syndrome still rests on clinical characteristics. Many girls with Rett syndrome have received a diagnosis of autism during their period of regression, which is why Rett syndrome is currently classified as a "pervasive developmental disorder.
