Rett syndrome
Rett syndrome (or Rett's disorder) is a progressive neurological disorder that is classified as a pervasive developmental disorder by the DSM-IV. See also: The symptoms of this disorder are easily confused with those of cerebral palsy. The clinical diagnosis specifies a small head and small hands and feet. Stereotypical repetitive hand movements such as mouthing or wringing of the hands are also included as diagnostic signs. Symptoms of the disease include learning disorders and a total inability to socialize. Girls with Rett syndrome are very prone to seizures and gastrointestinal disorders. They typically have no verbal skills, and about 50% of females are ambulatory. Rett syndrome (symbolized RTT) is X-linked dominant, affecting almost exclusively girls. Development is normal until 6-18 months, when language and motor milestones regress, purposeful hand use is lost and acquired microcephaly is seen. Hand-wringing and sighing are characteristic, and those affected develop autistic behavior..

Jump to: navigation search Rett syndrome is a childhood neuro-developmental disorder that affects females almost exclusively. It is an autism spectrum disorder, one of a group of conditions characterized by varying degrees of impairment in language and communication skills, as well as repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and behavior. Other autism spectrum disorders include: classic autism Asperger Syndrome , childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS).
edit Symptoms
Loss of muscle tone is usually the first symptom. Other early symptoms may include problems crawling or walking and diminished eye contact. As the syndrome progresses, a child will lose purposeful use of her hands and the ability to speak. Compulsive hand movements such as wringing and washing follow the loss of functional use of the hands. The inability to perform motor functions is perhaps the most severely disabling feature of Rett syndrome, interfering with every body movement, including eye gaze and speech.
edit Treatment
There is no cure for Rett syndrome. Treatment for the disorder is symptomatic, focusing on the management of symptoms, and supportive. Medication may be needed for breathing irregularities and motor difficulties, and antiepileptic drugs may be used to control seizures. Occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and hydrotherapy may prolong mobility. Some children may require special equipment and aids such as braces to arrest scoliosis, splints to modify hand movements, and nutritional programs to help them maintain adequate weight. Special academic, social, vocational, and support services may also be required in some cases.

Many girls have been misdiagnosed because Rett Syndrome is closely related to other disorders, such as autism, ataxic cerebral palsy, atypical Angelman's syndrome, mitochondria disease, spinocerebellar among others. The prevalence of Rett Syndrome is similar to the prevalence of autism; that is, estimates are between 1 in 10,000 births and 1 in 15,000 births. Beyond saying that Rett syndrome is a neurologic disorder, there is little agreement as to whether to classify it as a neurodegenerative disease or a mental retardation syndrome. 1038/13810 Rett syndrome is caused by mutations in X-linked MECP2, encoding methyl-CpG-binding protein 2Ruthie E.

Direct access to data Summary
Rett syndrome in girls is characterized by a serious and global developmental disorder affecting the central nervous system. It has been recently established that Rett syndrome is associated with mutation in , a gene encoding methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 and located on the long arm of chromosome X, in region Xq28. A deceleration of head growth is observed after the first year of life, and corresponds to an important cerebral atrophy that is diffuse and affects mainly gray matter. The evolution follows a characteristic pattern in typical forms. The main clinical manifestation consists of hand stereotypies. Rett syndrome exists in different parts of the world. Prevalence in Europe would be approximately 1:15,000. Mutations in the gene have been recently reported in males with severe encephalopathies. No etiologic treatment is available. Nonetheless, it is important to propose symptomatic treatment when necessary as well as adapted educational therapy. *Author: Pr. J. Mancini (March 2004)*. Full text

Rett Syndrome
Description
Rett syndrome is a neurological disorder found almost exclusively in females. Infants and children with the disorder usually develop normally until approximately age 6 to 18 months. They then cease to acquire new skills and gradually or suddenly lose previously acquired abilities, such as conscious control of the hands and the ability to vocalize most sounds or words. It has a prevalence of approximately 1 in 10 000 to 1 in 15 000 females between the ages of 5 and 18 years. There are about 200 girls in Australia who have been diagnosed with this condition. Rett syndrome is a genetic disorder – it is caused by a mutation of the MECP2 gene, which is found on the X chromosome – but less than one percent of recorded cases are inherited. Most cases are sporadic – the mutation occurs randomly. It was originally described by Dr. Andreas Rett of Austria in 1966, but did not become well known until twenty years later following publication of a report describing 35 affected girls from Sweden, Portugal, and France.
In the early onset stage – usually beginning between 6 and 18 months - there is only a subtle slowing of development, which may go unnoticed. Delays in gross motor skills such as sitting and crawling occur, and the child may make less eye contact and show less interest in toys. This stage may last from a few months to over a year.

Introduction
Research Paper Abstracts Research Paper Titles Introduction This is a severe developmental disability affecting girls. The disorder has an onset in the first months of life. Typically girls have a developmental plateau followed by onset of seizures, regression and breath holding, hand stereotypies, and loss then of functional use of their hands. Nearly all will be unable to talk and only about 50% will be able to walk. They develop a severe mental retardation. This is a complex disorder and requires a multidisciplinary team for management.
