edit Nature of early Roman myth
The Romans had no sequential narratives about their gods comparable to the Titanomachy or the seduction of Zeus by Hera until their poets began to adopt Greek models in the later part of the Roman Republic . What the Romans did have, however, were:
  • a highly developed system of rituals, priestly colleges, and pantheons of related gods. a rich set of historical myths about the foundation and rise of their city involving human actors, with occasional divine interventions.

The Roman model involved a very different way of defining and thinking about gods than that of Greek gods. For example, if one were to ask a Greek about

Roman Mythology and The NAACP
In Roman mythology, Janus, the god of gates, doorways, beginnings and endings, is usually pictured as a two-headed icon, a clean-shaven head facing forward, a bearded one backward. That’s a pretty good image for the NAACP under board chairman Julian Bond and just-departed CEO Bruce Gordon. Bond represents the backward-looking face of the NAACP, firmly committed to protecting the venerable civil rights organization’s role as a stalwart in the battle for civil rights. “Our mission is to fight racial discrimination and provide social justice,” Bond told The New York Times in an article published last Monday. “It is popular to say that we are in a post-civil-rights period, but we don’t believe that.” Gordon, who spent the first 35 years of his career as an executive at telecommunications giant Verizon, devoted his 19 months as the NAACP’s chief executive to an effort to make the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights group face forward, toward the new frontier of African-Americans’ struggle for full participation in U. S. society, where the dominant issues are the Three E’s: education, economics and empowerment. “We’ve got to get the right emphasis placed on economic equality,” he said, shortly after being named CEO. “I happen to think that when you have economic stability and equality, that often becomes an enabler for social equality.”

    Roman mythology
Roman mythology is the set of beliefs, rituals, and other observances concerning the supernatural held or practiced by the ancient Romans from early periods until Christianity finally completely supplanted the native religions of the Roman Empire The original religion of the early Romans was so modified by the addition of numerous and conflicting beliefs in later times, and by the assimilation of a vast amount of Greek mythology , that it cannot be reconstructed precisely. Because extensive changes in the religion had already taken place before the literary tradition began, its origins were in most cases unknown to the early Roman writers on religion, such as the 1st century BC scholar Marcus Terentius Varro . Other classical writers, such as the poet Ovid in his Fasti (Calendar), were strongly influenced by Hellenistic models, and in their works they frequently employed Greek beliefs to fill gaps in the Roman tradition.
