BRIEF HISTORY OF ROMANIA FOR TRAVELLERS
    Early History
Life has been documented on the present-day territory of Romania ever since the earliest ages. Archaeological excavations throughout the country have revealed that people have lived in the region for one or even two million years. Among other artifacts of historic importance, their life is also attested to by beautiful polychrome pottery of outstanding quality, such as the Cucuteni-Ariusd.
What is better known and much better documented is that later in Antiquity, Romania's present-day territory was inhabited by Dacians who were of a Thracian origin. They lived in tribes throughout the Carpathian Mountains, in Banat, Oltenia and in Transylvania.
On the shores of the Black Sea, Greek colonies were set up in the 7 th th century B.C. at Histria, Callatis or Tomis. Part of their remains, which make up a valuable heritage from the point of view of art and archaeology are still being researched by archaeologists to this day.
During the process of eastward expansion of the Roman Empire across Europe, the Romans attacked Dacia several times (in 89 A.D. and 101-102 A.D.) and eventually conquered it in 105-106 A.D. The ruler of Dacia, King Decebal, was forced to flee his capital, Sarmizegetusa, and committed suicide.

( The Romanian Athenaeum ) Romania in the Dark Ages
( The medieval city of Sibiu ) Romania in the Middle Ages In 1475, Stephen the Great of Moldavia scored a decisive victory over the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Vaslui. Wallachia and Moldavia would later come gradually under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire during the 15th and 16th centuries (1476 for Wallachia, 1514 for Moldavia), as vassal tributary states with complete internal autonomy and an external independence which was finally lost in the 18th century. In 1812 the Russian Empire annexed the eastern half side Bessarabia of Moldavia (though partially regained it with the Treaty of Paris in 1856), the Habsburg Monarchy annexed in 1775 its northern part Bukovina and the Ottoman Empire its south-eastern part Budjak .
Early Modern Romania Michael the Brave (Romanian: Mihai Viteazul) (1558-9 August 1601) was the Prince of Wallachia (1593-1601), of Transylvania (1599-1600), and of Moldavia (1600). During his reign the three principalities largely inhabited by Romanians were for the first time united under a single rule. He is regarded as one of Romania's greatest national heroes. At the end of the 18th century, the Habsburg Monarchy incorporated Transylvania into what successively became the Austrian Empire. During the time of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary (1867-1918), Romanians in Transylvania experienced one of the worst oppression in the form of the Magyarization policies of the Hungarian government.

    HISTORY
From about 200 B.C., when it was settled by the Dacians, a Thracian tribe, Romania has been on the path of a series of migrations and conquests. Under the emperor Trajan early in the second century A.D., Dacia was incorporated into the Roman empire, but was abandoned by a declining Rome less than two centuries later. Romania disappeared from recorded history for hundreds of years, to reemerge in the medieval period as the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. Heavily taxed and badly administered under the Ottoman empire, the two Principalities were unified under a single native prince in 1859, and had their full independence ratified in the 1878 Treaty of Berlin. A German prince, Carol of Hohenzollern, was crowned first King of Romania in 1881. The new state, squeezed between the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian empires, with Slav neighbors on three sides, looked to the West, particularly France, for its cultural, educational, and administrative models. Romania was an ally of the Entente and theU.S.in World War I, and was granted substantial territories with Romanian populations, notably Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina, after the war. Most of Romania's pre-World War II governments maintained the forms but not the substance of a liberal constitutional monarchy. The quasi-mystical, fascist Iron Guard movement, exploiting nationalism, fear of communism, and resentment of alleged foreign and Jewish domination of the economy, was a key factor in the creation of a dictatorship in 1938. In 1940-41, the authoritarian General Antonescu took control. Romania entered World War II on the side of the Axis Powers in June 1941, invading the Soviet Union to recover Bessarabia and Bukovina, which had been annexed in 1940.

Romania - Historical and Political Background The territory of present-day Romania has been inhabited since earliest times.
At the beginning of the second century A.D. the Romans conquered the lands they subsequently called the province of Dacia and merged with the former population.
After the Roman withdrawal the Daco-Roman populations continued to live on the old Dacian land, despite the attacks of the migratory peoples (Goths, Huns, Slavs, Hungarians). In the 4th century, the Romanians become Christians and after the Great Schism in 1054 they preserved the Orthodox rite.
The state organization was first attested in the 10th century. In the Middle Ages the Romanians lived in three Principalities, founded in the late 13th and early 14th centuries: Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania.
The state entity was maintained with the help of great rulers: Basarab I, Stefan cel Mare (Stephan the Great), Mircea cel Batran (Mircea the Elder), Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impeller).
The 18th century saw the expansion of the Habsburg and Russian Empires, and many battles against the Ottomans took place in the Romanian lands, for over 150 years.
