Gardening With Roses Roses are probably the most widely grown and most loved plant in the world. Easy to grow , hardy, with season-long profuse blooms, roses are suitable for most any garden. However, with 150 species to choose from it can be difficult to decide which is right for you. The following is a description of the different types of roses and the potential uses. There are basically only a few categories of roses; shrub roses, bush roses, climbing Shrub Roses
Perfect for hedges, shrub roses offer a low maintenance , easily cultivated solution for the garden. Fertilize and prune in the spring for best results. They provide color into the fall as they produce bright red rose hips. Bush Roses
Floribunda roses are more disease resistant as well as slightly more hardy than the hybrid tea. Blooming in small clusters of 25 or more flowers, the floribunda rose provides the garden with continuous color.

When is the best time to cut a cane for propagation? Can I use rooting hormone to facilitate the process? Is there anything special I need to know/do? Question #2 if I may....I have found that one climbing rose, growing through a tuteur thrives with little or no winter kill damage to the canes. However, another climber growing against a fence seems to die back quite a bit each year. That plant is about 8 or 9 years old. I have babied it along because it has had only one season in all these years when it bloomed and was breathtaking. I guess I just keep hoping for another such season. That rose was labeled 'America,' which is really all that I recall. Any help will be most appreciated!

Rose Gardening
Roses have gotten a bad wrap over the years for being difficult to grow and maintain. If you are thinking of rose gardening don’t let this rumor stop you. While rose gardening can prove to be challenging, once you get the hang of it, it really isn’t that bad. When you first start rose gardening, you will have to choose what type of rose you wish to plant, and no, I’m not talking about the color. You will have to choose between bare-root, pre-packaged, and container-grown roses. Bare-root roses are sold in the winter and early spring. They should be planted as soon as frosts are over and the ground is warm and workable. Pre-packaged roses are bare-root plants that are sold in a bad or box with something around the roots to retain moisture, such as sawdust. Container-grown roses are grown; you guessed it, in containers. They will be either budding or already in bloom when they become available in the early spring. Planting in rose gardening is not that much different than any other type of plant. The most important thing, as always, is good, healthy soil and a prime planting area. It doesn’t matter whether your roses are bare-root or container-grown, the planting methods are the same as any other shrub. Make sure the spot you choose has good drainage, gets plenty of sunlight, and will not overcrowd your roses. Before planting, any dead leaves and thin or decayed shoots need to be cut off. Any damaged or very long roots also need to be trimmed. Soak bare-root roses in water about 10-12 hours to restore moisture in the roots before planting and water the soil before planting as well. Make sure the hole you have dug is large enough for the root growth of the rose. Also it is a good idea to use compost or mulch. After all, roses like extra nutrients just like any other plant.

Blackspots on Roses Rose Gardening has remained one of a gardener`s most passionate pass times. Fossil remains found in Europe and America show that the rose was established on earth before man evolved. It has been found growing wild in most countries in the temperate zones in the Northern Hemisphere.
During its evolution Rose Gardening developed shapes and habits ranging from small shrubby bushes to robust tree climbers soaring up from the forest floor to reach the sky. It is the wild roses that are the true species, of which there are at least a hundred and fifty. The great majority of these originate from Asia. Almost all varieties, with very few exceptions, grow single flowers, each with a whorl of 5 petals.
Throughout the ages, gardeners cultivated the rose, developing the double flower and eventually the modern hybrids. Amongst the earliest species, the Rosa Gallica is believed to be the parent from which all European garden roses are descended. Many cross breeds later, we now have hundreds of varieties of roses.

Rose Gardening
Roses are universally favorite plants. The bright vibrant hues give gardens a splash of color. You can smell the heady perfume of roses during summer as they fill the air. With so many different varieties to choose from rose gardening is a marvelous experience. While its true that there many roses that you can choose from, the type is not important. What is important is that you plant them where you can reap the benefits later on. Roses are hardy plants. With so many gardeners breeding new hardy varieties, roses can now grow in any type of condition. Difficult soil and garden problems are no longer a barrier to well grown rose gardens. The key to rose gardening lies in buying plants that are at least two years old, that have been field grown and are budded. If your young rose plants are pruned then the heavy stems need to be 1/4 inches in diameter at the top. On the other hand if the rose plant is not pruned, then there should be three or more heavy stems that are 18 inches in diameter. You need to plant your roses in a sunny, well-drained spot. You should trim of all the bruised and broken stems off. In rose gardening roses needed to be eased into the ground. You first dig a hole 6 inches deeper than the rose roots need, then make the hole wide and big all around so that the roots will not grow crowded or bent.

Rose gardening is a past time and is enjoyable by people from all walks of life, of all ages, from all backgrounds and religions
A rose is a flowering shrub of the genus Rosa and the flower of this shrub. There are more than a hundred species of wild roses, all from the northern hemisphere and are generraly from temperate regions.
The species form a group of generally thorny shrubs or climbers, and sometimes trailing plants, usually reaching 2-5 m tall. They sometimes reach as high as 20 m by climbing over other plants.
The leaves of most species are 5-15 cm long, and the leaflets usually have a serrated margin. Often a few small thorns exist on the underside of the stem. The majority of roses are deciduous, but a few (notably in southeast Asia) are evergreen or nearly so.
The flowers have five petals (with the exception of Rosa sericea which often has only four), usually white or pink, and in a few species - yellow or red. The ovary is inferior, developing below the petals and sepals.
The fruit of the rose is a berry-like structure called a rose hip. The rose species that produce open-faced flowers are attractive to pollinating bees and other insects, and thus more apt to produce hips. Many of the domestic cultivars are so tightly petalled that they do not even provide access for pollination. The hips of most species are red, but a few such as Rosa pimpinellifolia have dark purple to black hips.

Rose Beads
Thomas Tanner of Ely I am unable to document this process, but rose beads are popular in the SCA. They are the origin of the name "rosary", and go back to Roman times. Basically, rose petals are formed into a paste, shaped and dried. There are many ways of doing this. One may use fresh or dried roses, the mixture can be cooked, or not, additives may be added, and the beads may be shaped complete with a hole or a hole may be drilled when dry. In Victorian times (the oldest time we have recipes for), the paste of fresh flowers was moderately heated, in a cast iron pot, for an hour a day, over three days, then formed over a large needle to create the hole. The cast iron pot has the effect of producing black beads. I used a quicker, modern variant of the cooked recipe, as produced by Lady Margritte of Ravenscroft. This calls for dried rose petals, orris root, gum arabic, rose essence, and a double boiler. The orris root, gum arabic and rose essence are optional. Orris (or iris) root powder is a fixative, allowing the beads to retain their scent for longer. It is obtainable from health food stores. Gum arabic is an adhesive to make the paste more cohesive, and may be found at art supply stores. Powdered is recommended, but I could only find the liquid kind, and used it to no ill effect. Rose essence/essential oil may be found at health food stores and pharmacies. It serves to increase the overall scent of the beads. My double-boiler used an enamel inner, meaning the beads come out natural (brown), rather than blackened. For blackened beads, either use cast iron or add iron nails to the mixture while it cooks.
