Radical revolutionary parties
During the , Russia's industrial development led to a significant increase in the size of the urban bourgeoisie and the working class, setting the stage for a more dynamic political atmosphere and the development of radical parties. Because the state and foreigners owned much of Russia's industry, the working class was comparatively stronger and the bourgeoisie comparatively weaker than in the West. The working class and peasants were the first to establish political parties because the nobility and the wealthy bourgeoisie were politically timid. During the 1890s and early , abysmal living and working conditions, high taxes, and land hunger gave rise to more frequent strikes and agrarian disorders. These activities prompted the bourgeoisie of various nationalities in the empire to develop a host of different parties, both liberal and conservative.

Specific Features of Russian National Character
Who are Russians?
The aim of this essay is to assess some beliefs about Russian national character widespread among Western audience and supported by Western mass media. While doing it I will use three operators: "true", "false", and "doubtful" substantiated by appropriate argumentation.
From this viewpoint the Tatars, the Bashkirs, are Russians; the Byelorussians, the Ukrainians living in the East regions of their countries are Russians; peoples living in the Caucasus are not Russians, to say nothing of Central Asian nations. The Byelorussians and the Ukrainians living in Western regions of their countries are not Russians. This viewpoint provides convincing explanation for recent events in the Ukraine: they were determined by essential differences between two ethnical groups. One group is the Ukrainians living in Eastern regions, who are Russians by their nature, and the other group are the Ukrainians living in Western regions of the Ukraine, who are non-Russians.
That is why the overwhelming majority of Russians, living in Russia, supports the leader of East Ukraine and holds a strong negative attitude to the leader of West Ukraine. And East Ukrainians will be always longing for Russia.

[fmr*oi] October 2005 September 30, 2005 Email Exhibition 9: "Exiles" (September 30 - October 28, 2005) Curated by Jesse Aaron Cohen Throughout the Czarist period, as far back as Peter the Great, Russian rulers used exile as a form of punishment for criminals and other 'undesirables' of society. With the addition of political prisoners to this class in the mid-19th century, the imperial government began to send thousands of men and women to the Siberian hinterlands to serve sentences stemming from their political activities. These thousands were a mere foreshadow of the millions who would be moved by the Soviet GULAG in the decades following the revolution. Featuring original and unpublished archival photographs from the turn-of-the-century, this exhibition attempts to portray daily life in the communities formed during these years of exile.

    Note on naming
The territory ruled by the Romanov dynasty was often called " Muscovy " in Western Europe until well into the eighteenth century. Before the proclamation of the Russian Empire in 1721, the state was referred to in its official documents as "Rusia" (17th c. Russian ''Русія'') or "Rosia" (17th c. Russian ''Росія'', apparently under influence of Greek ''Ρωσια''), a longer form of the traditional East Slavic name Rus' (''Русь''). While the Russian Population itself has always considered "Rus" to be a name for their country and nation, modern Ukrainian commentators and certain scholars outside Russia have disputed the accuracy of this self-identification. The modern spelling ''Россия'' (with s doubled) was in official use after about 1713 (if the pre-1918 distinction between ''и'' and ''і'' is disregarded).
