RUSSIAN LITERATURE. To get a clear idea of Russian literature, it will be most convenient for us to divide it into oral and written. The first of these sections includes the interesting byliny, or "tales of old time," as the word may be translated, which have come down to us in great numbers, as they have been sung by wandering minstrels all over the country. The scholars who have given their attention to these compositions have made the following division of them into cycles: (1) that of the older heroes; (2) that of Vladimir , prince of Kiev; (3) (3) that of Novgorod ; (4) that of Moscow ; (5) that of the Cossacks ; (6) that of Peter the Great; (7) the moderneriod. These poems if the ma be so peasant ' 'P P, Y Y songs. styled, are not in rhyme ; the ear is satisfied with a certain cadence which is observed throughout. For a long time they were neglected, and the collection of them began only towards the conclusion of the 17th century. The style of Russian literature which prevailed from the time of Lomonosov was wholly based upon the French or pseudo-classical school. It was, therefore, hardly likely that these peasant songs would attract attention. But when the gospel of romanticism was preached and the History of Karamzin appeared, a new impulse was given to the collection of all the remains of popular literature. In 1804 appeared a volume based upon those which had been gathered together by

Russian literature
Old Russian literature consists of sparse popular tales and folklore: educated and literary Russian-speakers used Old Church Slavonic as a literary vehicle. Westernization of Russia (particularly associated with the name of Tsar Peter the Great coincided with reform of the Russian alphabet and increased tolerance of the idea of employing the popular language for general literary purposes. Writers like Dmitri Kantemir and Mikhail Lomonosov in the earlier 18th century paved the way for poets like Derzhavin , playwrights like Sumarokov and prose writers like Karamzin[?] and Radishchev Romanticism permitted a flowering of especially poetic talent: the names of Zhukovsky[?] and Pushkin came to the fore, followed by Mikhail Lermontov Nineteenth-century developments included Ivan Krylov the fabulist; non-fiction writers such as Belinsky[?] and Aleksandr Herzen[?] ; and a group of widely-recognised novelists such as Nikolai Gogol Lev Tolstoy Fyodor Dostoevsky Leskov[?] ... Saltykov-Shchedrin[?] and Goncharov[?]

Old Russian Literature Scholars generally divide the earliest Russian literature into two periods: the Kyiv (also spelled Kiev) and the Muscovite. The Kyiv period extends from the 10th century to the mid-13th century. During that time Kyiv (now the capital of Ukraine) served as Russia’s cultural hub and thrived as one of the most important religious and commercial cities of medieval Europe. In 1240 nomadic peoples from Asia called Tatars invaded and destroyed Kyiv, and Russian cultural and political activity gradually shifted north to Moscow. The Muscovite period, when Moscow became the new power, lasted from the late 13th century to the 17th century. Much of old Russian literature consists of historical chronicles and religious works prompted by Russian participation in the Orthodox Church. A. The Kyiv Period The earliest literary works of the Russians were not in the Russian language but in Old Church Slavonic, a related Slavic language that was the first written language in Russia. Old Church Slavonic was first written down in the 9th century ad by Greek missionaries Cyril and Methodius, who used it to convert Slavic peoples to Christianity. Old Church Slavonic became the liturgical language of the Orthodox Church, which directed literary activity in Russia. In 988 Vladimir I, Grand Duke of Kyiv, converted to Christianity and made it Russia’s official religion. With his conversion came the need for scribes to translate and compile biblical texts, sermons, lives of saints, and other instructive and inspirational writings from Greek originals. As literacy increased, so did the available reading matter: Compilations of knowledge, historical chronicles, and poems appeared, all translated into Old Church Slavonic. Old Church Slavonic remained the literary language of Russia until the 17th century.

Lyrics for Russian Literature
performed by Maximo Park
Modern architecture
Already left to decay
You don't know what you're breathing in
What it is, I couldn't say
We'll meet in russian literature
For floode day
Travel in transpenines
She said she'd wait
More empty buildings
For invisible men
No market vaule to justify the price of the rent Ignorance isn't bliss Familiarity still enters contempt We're going to need sometime But she said she'd wait for me (Wait for me) (Wait for me) Are you hopeful or just gullible? Are you hopeful or just gullible? She won't be saved We can't be saved I can't live my life being nervous about tomorrow I already knew her name! I already knew Well I knew her name There's a news blackout 'Cus it just got worse Status depends, on the size of your purse There it is again that lock of hair that won't sit still Our earthly pleasure distract us against our will (Against our will) Are you hopeful or just gullible?
