Russian Literature and Empire
Conquest of the Caucasus from Pushkin to Tolstoy
Series: Cambridge Studies in Russian Literature
Susan Layton
This is the first synthesizing study of Russian writing about the Caucasus during the nineteenth-century age of empire-building. It covers major writers including Pushkin, Tolstoy and Lermontov, but also introduces material from travelogues, oriental studies, ethnography, memoirs, and the utterances of tsarist officials and military commanders. Setting these writings and the responses of the Russian readership in historical and cultural context, Susan Layton examines ways that literature underwrote imperialism. But her study also reveals the tensions between the Russian state's ideology of a European mission to civilize the Caucasian Muslim mountaineers, and romantic perceptions of those peoples as noble primitives whose extermination was no cause for celebration.

In the introduction, written by Galya Diment, she states, " like Russia, which spans Asia and Europe, Oblomov and his countrymen, according to Goncharov, consist of two unequal and contradictory tendencies: a much stronger Eastern one( indolent, easy going, and dreamy), and a weaker Western one( industrious, practical, and socially useful). And which do you consider the best?
Pnin and Pale Fire still get my nod as some of the most underrated American novels of all time. Posted by Sachi Lolita is # one. Two is Pale Fire. Three is Ada. Those are the top three American novels. Posted by charles mudede Russian novel? I have to go with WE. Orwell got the credit for 1984, but Zamyatin's "We" was the original dystopic novel. I might not be a lit critic, but where is Dostievski? Posted by SeMe Not obscure enough. Posted by d Ada was written in Russian, was it not? But yes, I tend to agree that Lolita is likely one of the very greatest of all American Novels. There's so much wonderful writing I hate to say that any novel is "#1" though. Who could say that Lolita is better or worse than Huckleberry Finn or Light in August or The Poisonwood Bible. They (and hundreds more) all have brilliancies that have engaged me and many other readers over the centuries. Posted by Sachi I'm pretty sure Ada was written in English. Nabokov's earlier stuff was written in Russian, mostly for the emigre community, but Ada came later on. Ada is surely one of the greatest novels ever, and yet... I'm betting I'm not the only reader who succumbed to the temptation to blip over some of Van's longer meditations on the nature of time and shit.

Russian literature refers to the literature of Russia or its ©migr©s , and to the Russian-language literature of several independent nations once a part of what was historically Russia or the Soviet Union . Prior to the nineteenth century Russia produced very little, if any, internationally read literature, but from around the 1830's Russian literature underwent an astounding golden age, beginning with the poet Aleksandr Pushkin and culminating in two of the greatest novelists in world literature, Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky , and the playwright Anton Chekhov . In the twentieth century leading figures of Russian literature included internationally recognised poets such as Vladimir Mayakovsky Boris Pasternak Anna Akhmatova or Joseph Brodsky , and prose writers Maxim Gorky Vladimir Nabokov Mikhail Sholokhov Mikhail Bulgakov or Alexandr Solzhenitsyn

Paper Abstract:
Common theme and characterization in two short novels. Tolstoy's "HADJIMURAD" and Pushkin's "THE CAPTAIN'S DAUGHTER." Similarities of the novels in addressing themes of history, politics, aesthetics and personality. Russia's complex political system and class antagonisms as central to the authors' literary efforts. The spirit of rebellion in both novels. Paper Introduction: Thematic Analysis: Two Examples of Russian Literature Introduction and Purpose Both Tolstoy (in Hadji Murad) and Pushkin (in The Captain’s Daughter) employ the devices of fiction to address themes of history and politics, aesthetics, and personality. In this brief essay, these two writers’ short novels will be compared with respect to each of these levels. It will be argued that for both Pushkin and Tolstoy, the inescapable facts of Russia’s complex political system and class and/or ethnic antagonisms were central to their literary efforts and that the novellas share many similarities in terms of theme and characterization. The Historical and Political Level Tolstoy’s Hadji Murad has been described by John Bayley (1967) as the story of a native chieftain (whose name const
