    The History of Sandwiches
    Types of Sandwiches
    by Diana Serbe
with Elinoar Moore, Tony Matteliano and Craig Tiano Webster tells us that the sandwich was named after the Earl of Sandwich, and defines it as "two or more slices of bread with a filling of meat, fish, cheese, jam, etc., between them..." With the possibility of so many fillings that Webster settles for 'etc.,' we must turn to the critical element of a sandwich, one that has infinite variety itself - bread. Let us go back in time to the 1st century B.C.
    History of Sandwiches
The first recorded sandwich was made by the famous Rabbi, Hillel the Elder, who lived during the 1st century B.C. A poor man, but a great scholar, he began the Passover custom of sandwiching a mixture of chopped nuts, apples, spices, and wine between two matzohs to eat with bitter herbs. This sandwich is the foundation of the Seder and is named after him. But matzoh, being unleavened bread, is not absorptive of sauces and juices as today's sandwich has become.
Before the Renaissance and the invention of the fork, any object that moved between plate and mouth, lifting cooked food and its sauce without spills was a necessary utensil. From the Dark Ages to the Renaissance, bread was an integral part of a table setting. Thick slices of bread, called trenchers, were set on wooden plates (also called trenchers) to soak up the sauces accompanying pieces of meat. The word comes from the French verb

    very cherry whole wheat muffins
Cherries are in the local markets now and I'm super excited. I love cherries and usually just pop them into my mouth fresh, but sometimes I get a hankering for something a little different. Sometimes it works, like these cherry muffins below, and sometimes it doesn't
As my bag of cherries began to dwindle and there only seemed to be the ugly testical-looking cherries left alongside the softer, darker ones that I don't like to eat. I figured muffins would be the way I could save these sweet babies from the compost heap. So I got to pitting and chopping them and threw them into a simple muffin batter. I went with a whole wheat pastry flour since I got a huge bag for cheap at my local Chinatown grocer. If you don't have access to ww pastry flour, try half white and half whole wheat to help cut through the heaviness of regular whole wheat. The resulting muffins were light, tasty and were an easy way to grab something quick for breakfast.

    20. The Food Timeline: History Notes--sandwiches
Recipes for sandwiches were not immediately forthcoming in cookbooks. Why? In England they were (at first) considered restaurant fare. In America?

(aka Denver omelets) Have questions? Ask! Who invented the sandwich? When? Where? And Why?
Although combinations of bread/pastry filled with meat or cheese and dressed with condiments have been enjoyed since ancient times, food historians generally attribute the creation of the sandwich, as we know it today, to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich . This Englishman was said to have been fond of gambling. As the story goes, in 1762, during a 24 hour gambling streak he instructed a cook to prepare his food in such a way that it would not interfere with his game. The cook presented him with sliced meat between two pieces of toast. Perfect! This meal required no utensils and could be eaten with one hand, leaving the other free to continue the game. Sadly, the name of real inventor of the sandwich (the cook) was not recorded for posterity. This is what the food historians have to say:
