    Asparagus Sandwiches
    Asparagus Logs
    1 can Asparagus (long stems)
    butter
    mayonnaise
    Salt and pepper
GOOD square white bread Carefully remove asparagus spears from tin, spread on paper towel to drain
for at least two hours, (if some are very "fat" split in half).
Remove crusts from bread carefully spread each square with butter, and then
spread carefully and generously with mayonnaise.
    Roll from corner to make a tube. I then cut the tube in half to make smaller portions - your choice;
pile in bowl or on plate, cover with aluminum foil (putting in Tupperware doesn't seem to have the same effect, who knows why) Refrigerate for several hours. Remove from fridge at least 1/2 hour before serving. So easy! Make it in the morning . Asparagus Ham Rolls Ham slices, square ones Pickled Asparagus stocks Cream Cheese Use honeyed pressed ham slices (square ones), make sure meat is dry. Spread cream cheese over entire square, place a pickled asparagus stalk in the middle, roll up and cut in 1 inch pieces. Very easy to make, perfectly bite sized, and with a great blend of tastes! This could also be turned into a sandwich similar to the above this one..

The first form of sandwich is attributed to the ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder , who is said to have put meat from the Paschal lamb and bitter herbs inside matzo (or flat, unleavened bread) during Passover . The filling between the matzos served as a reminder to Israelites of their forced labor constructing Egyptian buildings. During the Middle Ages , thick slabs of coarse and usually stale bread, called "trenchers", were used as plates. After a meal, the food-soaked trencher was fed to a dog, less fortunate beggars, or eaten by the diner. Trenchers were as much the harbingers of open-face sandwiches

US military creates indestructible sandwich

Enlarge image Photo: M Tama/Getty Images Tools Related Articles Web Links First came the atom bomb, the stealth bomber and the airborne laser. Now comes the US military's latest fearsome weapon: the indestructible sandwich. Capable of surviving airdrops, rough handling and extreme climates, and just about anything except a GI's jaws, the new "pocket" sandwich is designed to stay "fresh" for up to three years at 26 °C (about the temperature of a warm summer's day), or for six months at 38 °C (just over body temperature). For years the US army has wanted to supplement its standard battlefield rations, called "Meal, Ready-to-Eat" (MRE), with something that can be eaten on the move. Although MREs already contain ingredients that could be made into sandwiches, these have to be pasteurised and stored in separate pouches, and the soldiers need to make the sandwiches themselves.

Pulled pork sandwiches can hardly be called sandwiches. The sauce soaks into the buns and if you tried to pick one up with your hands it would completely fall apart. Well, perhaps if you used a sturdier bun, and wrapped the sandwich in aluminum foil like a burrito, it could be eaten like a sandwich. We just pile the pulled pork on a hamburger bun and eat it with a fork. Pulled pork is the perfect slow-cooking winter dish, warm and spicy. This is my father's pulled pork sandwich recipe, and is, in my humble opinion, the best

73. Sandwich, A Background Of Its Origin
The sandwich came into English from John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich.
http://www.wordsources.info/words-mod-sandwich.html
English-derived words from Latin and Greek sources here.
The sandwich , which is most popular with world-wide eaters, functions as a noun or a verb and usually prefers to have its name pronounced as SAND wich . Besides the more obvious occupation of being something edible between two or more slices of bread, metaphorically speaking, it also likes to squeeze in between two other people, places, things, materials, etc.; as, he is willing to sandwich an appointment in between two other meetings or her car was sandwiched between two other cars in the parking lot.
The word sandwich that we use today was born in London during the very late hours one night in 1762 when an English nobleman, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), was too busy gambling to stop for a meal even though he was hungry for some food. The legend goes that he ordered a waiter to bring him roast-beef between two slices of bread. The Earl was able to continue his gambling while eating his snack; and from that incident, we have inherited that quick-food product that we now know as the sandwich.

Arguments spread thick
Rivals aren't serving same food, judge rules
November 10, 2006 A burrito is not a sandwich. That's the culinary ruling of a Worcester judge, ending, for now, a food fight between Panera Bread Co. and Qdoba Mexican Grill. In issuing his decision, which blocks Panera Bread's attempts to keep the burrito maker off its turf, Worcester Superior Court Judge Jeffrey A. Locke relied on testimony from Cambridge chef Chris Schlesinger and a former high-ranking USDA official, not to mention the Webster's Third New International Dictionary. The burrito brouhaha began when Panera, one of the country's biggest bakery cafes, argued that owners of the White City Shopping Center in Shrewsbury violated a 2001 lease agreement that restricted the mall from renting to another sandwich shop. When the center signed a lease this year with Qdoba, Panera balked, saying the Mexican chain's burritos violate its sandwich exclusivity clause. Not so, Qdoba countered, submitting affidavits from high-profile experts in the restaurant and food industry. "I know of no chef or culinary historian who would call a burrito a sandwich," Schlesinger said in his affidavit. "Indeed, the notion would be absurd to any credible chef or culinary historian." In his ruling, Locke cited Webster's definition of a sandwich and explained that the difference comes down to two slices of bread versus one tortilla: "A sandwich is not commonly understood to include burritos, tacos, and quesadillas, which are typically made with a single tortilla and stuffed with a choice filling of meat, rice, and beans," he wrote.

75. Paragraph Sandwich"

http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Mountain/9112/Parasandwich.html
Teach students how to create a fantastic paragraph with this wonderful "sandwich" idea. It will allow students to learn the basics and get them thinking about what is needed to write great paragraphs for any audience! MATERIALS:
  • an overhead with writing lines a construction paper "sandwich" (2 slices of bread, a piece of meat, a tomato, some lettuce, a piece of cheese) small versions of the above construction paper sandwich for each child
PROCEDURE: Discuss the ingredients that are essential to making a good sandwich. Show students the kind of sandwich you are going to make by illustrating on the board the "essential elements" in your sandwich, and the order with which you will create it. Discuss the need for a piece of bread on the top and a piece of bread on the bottom to hold the sandwich together. Direct the students to see that a paragraph is just like a sandwich. It needs an opening sentence and a closing sentence to hold the paragraph together. Just like the bread, the opening and closing may look almost the same. They will basically state the same thing, using different words. Explain that just as the ingredients inside the sandwich are needed to make it taste good, the "ingredients" inside a paragraph are needed to make it sound good. The ingredients inside the paragraph are referred to as it's supporting details.
