Schizophrenia In Children
No. 49; Updated November 2004
Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric illness that causes strange thinking, strange feelings, and unusual behavior. It is uncommon in children and is hard to recognize in its early phases. The cause of schizophrenia is not known. Current research suggests a combination of brain changes, bio-chemical, genetic and environmental factors may be involved. Early diagnosis and medical treatment are important. Schizophrenia is a life-long disease that can be controlled but not cured. The symptoms and behavior of children and adolescents with schizophrenia may differ from that of adults with this illness. The following symptoms and behaviors can occur in children or adolescents with schizophrenia:
  • seeing things and hearing voices which are not real (hallucinations), odd and eccentric behavior, and/or speech, unusual or bizarre thoughts and ideas, confusing television and dreams from reality

  • Person's family history
  • Emotional history
  • Current symptoms
  • Presence of other disorders (differential diagnosis)

It may be difficult to diagnose acute (quick, severe, and brief) schizophrenia during its first episode. Often, physicians must wait to establish recurrence, chronicity, and intensity, especially with regard to negative symptoms. For these reasons, a physician's main goal in early diagnosis is to distinguish a person's disturbance from other conditions, including other psychotic disorders, organic disorders, and drug-related conditions. Differential diagnosis for schizophrenia involves distinguishing it from bipolar disorder , schizoaffective disorder, and brief psychotic disorder. Schizophrenia-related changes in mood can include mania and depression. However, these changes in mood typically do not meet the criteria for full-blown mania or depression, which occur in bipolar disorder.

Paranoid Schizophrenia
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Schizophrenia (SKITS-oh-FREEN-ee-uh)-one of the most damaging of all mental disorders-causes its victims to lose touch with reality. They often begin to hear, see, or feel things that aren't really there (hallucinations) or become convinced of things that simply aren't true (delusions). In the paranoid form of this disorder, they develop delusions of persecution or personal grandeur. The first signs of paranoid schizophrenia usually surface between the ages of 15 and 34. There is no cure, but the disorder can be controlled with medications. Severe attacks may require hospitalization.
Causes
The causes of schizophrenia are still under debate. A chemical imbalance in the brain seems to play a role, but the reason for the imbalance remains unclear. We do know that you're a bit more likely to become schizophrenic if you have a family member with the illness. Stress does not cause schizophrenia, but can make the symptoms worse.

Schizophrenia
What Is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia, which affects 1 percent of the world’s population, is a severe, chronic, and generally disabling brain disease. While the term schizophrenia literally means "split mind", it should not be confused with a "split", or multiple, personality. It is more accurately described as a psychosis a type of illness that causes severe mental disturbances that disrupt normal thoughts, speech, and behavior. Schizophrenia is believed to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Symptoms of Schizophrenia The symptoms of schizophrenia fall into three main categories:
  • Positive symptoms , which are unusual thoughts or perceptions that include hallucinations (disturbances of sensory perception), delusions (false beliefs) and thought disorder.
  • Negative symptoms , which represent a loss or a decrease in the ability to initiate plans, speak, express emotion, or find pleasure in everyday life. These symptoms are harder to recognize as part of the disorder and can be mistaken for laziness or depression.
  • Cognitive symptoms (or cognitive deficits), which are problems with attention, certain types of memory, and the executive functions that allow us to plan and organize. Cognitive deficits can also be difficult to recognize as part of the disorder but are the most disabling in terms of leading a normal life.

Schizophrenia Is Not "Split Personality" There is a common notion that schizophrenia is the same as "split personality” – a Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde switch in character. This is not correct. Are People With Schizophrenia Likely To Be Violent? What About Suicide Suicide is a serious danger in people who have schizophrenia. If an individual tries to commit suicide or threatens to do so, professional help should be sought immediately. People with schizophrenia have a higher rate of suicide than the general population. Approximately 10 percent of people with schizophrenia (especially younger adult males) commit suicide. Unfortunately, the prediction of suicide in people with schizophrenia can be especially difficult.

Skip to content Home Body map List of conditions ... Links Schizophrenia What is Schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder. It affects people all over the world. Schizophrenia patients experience progressive personality changes and a breakdown in their relationships with the outside world. People who suffer from schizophrenia can have a very broad range of symptoms which cause great distress to themselves and their families. They have disorganised and abnormal thinking, behaviour and language and become emotionally unresponsive or withdrawn. People used to think that schizophrenia was "all in your head". Today, we know the that schizophrenia is a brain disorder. There are differences, deep within the brain, of some people with schizophrenia. Researchers found this out by taking detailed pictures of the brain. How do you get Schizophrenia? This is still a mystery. The cause of schizophrenia is thought to involve many different factors. Researchers think that genes may play a role because you are more likely to get schizophrenia if you have a parent, brother or sister with the disorder. The other causes of the illness remain unknown, although it is thought that schizophrenia sufferers have some parts of the brain that have not developed in the normal way. Environmental factors may also play a role. For example, infants who have birth trauma may be at a greater risk of developing schizophrenia.
