Everyone is for keeping children safe, and for obeying traffic laws. But with all the crime occurring out there, is this how we want police officers to spend their time? Posted by John Robinson on November 26, 2007 6:02 AM Permalink

School Bus Safety Henry J. Srednicki, Ph.D., NCSP, Communique , February 1997, vol. 25, no. 5 The best solution to school bus safety is prevention. Children, parents and educators need to be aware of potential risks involved with children and school buses. Motorists need to obey regulations regarding driving in the vicinity of school buses and their designated drop off zones. Here are some useful tips to help get this school year off to a safe start for you and your children: On the way to the bus, be alert. Always arrive a few minutes early and obey traffic lights and signals. Encourage your child to walk with schoolmates, always facing traffic. When crossing the street, always use the crosswalks and look both ways at intersections! At the bus stop, stand back from the curb. Children should not push or shove when entering or exiting the bus and always use the steps and hand rails. Obey the driver and wait for the driver’s signal before crossing. Children should always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus and—never crawl under a bus! Instruct your children to take their seat quickly and quietly and remain seated while the bus is moving. Keep feet on the floor and never extend hands or any object out the window of a bus. Talk in a courteous tone and be courteous to the driver and schoolmates. Do not distract the driver through misbehavior.

Home N Y State Programs ] [Communities] [ State Page SCHOOL BUS SAFETY Parents deserve the confidence of knowing that their children will be safe from the moment they step onto the bus in the morning until they return home in the afternoon. But far too often we read about stories about young children who have been abandoned on empty school buses or about unqualified drivers whose erratic behavior threatens the well-being of young, helpless children. Improving school bus safety is a top priority . That is why I am pushing a school bus safety legislative package which will soon pass in the Senate and hopefully pass in the Assembly. Each of the 12 bills would significantly enhance the safety of children who ride school buses. One bill would end the practice of allowing "standees" on school buses. It just makes sense that children would be safer in an accident if they are seated rather than filling the aisles of moving school buses. A second bill would require a study by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Council to determine if New York should require students to wear seat belts on buses. A older initiative required school districts to set their own policies on seat belts, but it’s past time to determine if we need a standardized rule for the entire state. A third measure would make sure that young children are not left on an empty bus. Too many times we hear about a child who fell asleep and was mistakenly left on their bus. This bill would simply, but strictly, require school bus drivers to check their buses before parking.

For 23 million students nationwide, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. In 1995, 23 student pedestrians were killed nationwide in school bus loading/unloading zones. Before children go back to school or start school for the first time, it is important that adults and children know school bus safety rules.
Every school bus is surrounded by a danger zone. A danger zone consists of the 10 feet in front of the bus, and on all other sides of the bus that are used for loading and unloading the bus. Following a few simple school bus safety tips will ensure that all children are safe around the danger zones of a school bus. 1.) Children should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early to prevent running up to the bus stop when the bus is approaching.
2.) As the bus approaches, stand at least 6 feet away from the curb.

Watch your step. f Sit down. - Go directly to your seat and sit down. Don't wait for a friend to get on before you take a seat.

School Bus Safety
For thousands of students in Shelby County, the school day begins and ends with a trip on the school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. According to the Alabama State Department of Education, along with the National Safety Council, school buses are the safest form of ground transportation. In fact, they are about 40 times safer than the family car. Teaching children on how to be a safe pedestrian is essential to school bus safety. Beginning with their first step as they leave the house, children must learn how to safely arrive at the school bus stop, board the bus, behave during the bus ride, and exit the bus. Tips for a Safe Bus Ride
  • Get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. When the bus approaches, stand at least 10 feet away from the curb, and line up away from the street. Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says that it's okay before stepping onto the bus.

When we started our investigation of school bus safety we really didn't know what we were going to discover. But after a few days of surveilance it became very apparent that a significant number of bus drivers are failing in one of their most basic responsibilities:stop, look and listen at all railroad crossings. After seeing our video, representatives from Minnesota's school bus operators associations told us our story was a huge "wake up" call. They are encouraging the public to keep an eye on school bus driver behavior. If you see something wrong, write down the bus number and name of the company or school district. Then contact them to report what you saw. Also, feel free to contact me if there are other issues you feel warrant investigation. 12 Comments Add a Comment Member Comments Total Comments: 12 Page 1 of 1 angelsupport

School Bus Safety School bus safety is a significant factor in our school system that is often overlooked. It is important for students and parents to follow these important safety tips. For Students:
  • Be on time. Never run to or from the bus. Stand back from the curb. Don't push or shove. Stay in your seat. Don't yell or shout. Always obey the driver. Wait for the driver's signal before crossing. Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus. Never crawl under a school bus.
For Parents:
  • Make sure your children get to the school bus stop in plenty of time. Discourage loosely fitting and baggy clothing that can get caught in handrails, in swinging doors, and on seats. The most dangerous area is at the loading and unloading areas. Instruct your children to avoid horseplay and to stay back away from the bus until it is okay to board. Instruct your children to remain seated while on the bus, and avoid horseplay or being exceptionally noisy. It is up to seven times safer for children to ride the bus to school vs. riding in the private passenger vehicle. Encourage your children to take the bus. Stop for school buses with red lights flashing...even in the school yard!

With the recent accident with kids in the bed of a pick-up truck, another disturbing scenario comes to mind: What about school bus seat belts? I have two kids in two different schools. I just watched them both get on the buses. One bus requires the children to be buckled into the seats, and has another adult posted ON THE BUS to assure compliance. The other bus just has the usual "festival seating" rules (i.e. get to a seat and sit down). If I or you or anyone else can receive a ticket for children (or even adults) not being buckled into seats, how can school buses have up to 40 or so aboard without the same requirements? 21 Comments Add a Comment Member Comments Total Comments: 21 Page 1 of 2 Last cabnitman
I'm still trying to get over the fact that if you are over 5 years old, you can sit in the back of a pickup. If you are inside you need to be belted, but outside is ok.....bwtf

School buses transport almost three million Canadian children a day, travelling millions of kilometres in both rural and urban areas. Statistically, the school bus is the safest way for children to get to school. On average over the past 10 years there has been less than one fatality per year inside a school bus. Most injuries happen outside the bus.

  • Wear bright contrasting colors so you will be seen easier by motorist. Leave home on time for you will not be late for the bus. Use a back pack or bag for your books and papers.
Walking to the Bus stop
  • Walk on the sidewalk if there is one present. If you must walk on the street walk single file, face traffic, and stay near the edge of the road. Parents can go to the bus stop with younger children and have older children walk in groups. It is easier for drivers to spot groups of children. Stop look left and right, then left again if you must cross the street. Do the same thing at alleys. Watch for cars pulling into or backing out of driveways.
At the bus stop
  • Do not push, shove, or run around at the bus stop.

Defects News Notice/Disclosure SCHOOL BUS SAFETY / SEAT BELTS OVERVIEW US Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration DOT HS 806 965 Final Report INTRODUCTION Over the years, various groups have advocated the installation of safety belts in large school buses. Among the arguments offered by these groups is that encouraging (or requiring) safety belt use in school buses may foster habits that "carry over" to the family automobile, resulting in increased use or encouragement of others to use belts. As of April 1985, as least fourteen school districts across the nation had equipped a total of about 143 buses with passenger safety belts (.04 percent of the national fleet). More than forty additional school districts, including three of the five operating the largest school bus fleets, have decided to incorporate belts in to their school bus safety programs. Additionally, many jurisdictions are considering legislation to require the use of safety belts on large school buses. Accordingly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an exploratory study of the possible 'carryover" effects of safety belt use in school buses. NHTSA contracted with Creative Associates, Inc. to look at the experiences of sites currently operating bus safety belt programs.
