SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
School buses are quite safe and easily the safest means for children to get to school and back. But here are some practical lessons taken partly from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and my own background to maximize their protection:
1. Allow plenty of time to get kids to the bus stop. Children who are late may be tempted to run into a busy street.
2. Children need to wait in a safe place at the bus stop away from any traffic.
3. Instruct your children to never, ever, walk behind a bus or too close in front of a bus. Buses have blind spots that kids need to be aware of. Before crossing in front of the bus, take five "giant steps" (about 10 feet) away from the bus.
4. Kids should never stick their hands, heads, or any objects out bus windows.
6. Students should walk three "giant steps" away from the bus after they arrive at their destination.
7. If a child drops something near the bus, they should not pick it up until they talk to a driver or an adult on duty. Drivers cannot always see children if they are close to the bus.
I hope you get a chance to speak to your children about bus safety. If you want more information, check out:

School Bus Safety
As August rolls in, the schools will once again see a flurry of activity as custodial and maintenance employees put the finishing touches on the improvements and summer cleaning that occurs every year, teachers will be setting up their rooms including the decorating of bulletin boards, and the hosting of orientation activities designed to create an air of excitement as students return. The start of school also means that the fleet of school busses operated by Pendleton County Schools will return to the highways and byways after a three month absence. This is the right time to review with your children some rules of safety when it comes to riding the bus: Yellow flashing lights on the bus indicate the bus is getting ready to stop and load or unload. This means cars need to slow down and get ready to stop. Red Flashing Lights and Stop Signal Arm indicates that the bus has stopped and that children are getting on or off. This tells motorists to stop their cars. The bus driver. A bus driver’s main concern is safety. To become a bus driver you must be a good driver and pass a test which allows you to get a special license. What’s your bus driver’s name?

Colebrook Consolidated School School Bus Safety (for kids and adults) Did you know that more than 330,000 Connecticut kids ride school buses every day? According to Safe Kids Connecticut, there are some very simple things you can do as kids to keep yourself safe while getting on and off the school bus.
  • Wait for the bus in a safe place, away from traffic and the street Line up facing the bus door, not along the side of the school bus Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you, before you get on the bus. NEVER cross the street behind the school bus. After getting off the bus, move out of the traffic area. Wait for a signal from the bus driver before you cross the street. Walk at least 10 steps away from the front of the bus so that the bus driver can see you. Drivers have to follow certain rules around school buses, but not all of them do, so watch carefully when getting on and off the bus.
Things to do as adults:
  • Drive carefully on neighborhood streets and around school zones. Always expect the unexpected! When the lights are flashing on a school bus, come to a complete stop.

It's back to school season and that means big changes to the commute. More cars will be on the road, especially bus traffic and more kids will be walking the street. With that in mind, I thought we should all brush up on our school bus etiquette. According to the NHTSA, s chool buses are the safest form of highway transportation. But the most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the school bus. Transportation officials want to make sure kids keep away from the "Danger Zone." That's the loading and loading area around the bus. Here are a few tips for kids and motorists. I'll also fill you in on Florida Law. KIDS GETTING ON/OFF THE BUS Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early.

Today is PennDOT will correct school bus safety manual mistake. SOUTH FORK, Pa. (AP, Feb. 25) - The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said it will fix a mistake in its School Bus Driver Training Manual that has been the subject of recent stories in the Tribune-Democrat of Johnstown. The newspaper has been reporting on a complaint that drivers from Hillegas Bus Co. filed with Adams Township police against a South Fork officer, Robert Mackey, who passed two stopped school buses on Feb. 17. Mackey was traveling to a serious domestic violence call at the time, police said. The owner of the bus company, relying on PennDOT's school bus manual, said Mackey was clearly wrong. The manual says no motorist can pass a stopped school bus that has turned on its red flashing lights not even a police officer on an emergency call. But PennDOT officials said the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code holds sway. The code says emergency vehicles can pass stopped school buses with caution. "This situation did alert us that the school bus driver manual does need changed," said PennDOT spokeswoman Joan Nissley. "The vehicle code is the law."

School Bus Safety Posted by Richard French @05:10:16 pm (191 words, 347 views) Category: RFL Big Story Any rational person has to objectively call school bus safety an oxymoron. With all the attention, effort and taxpayer expense to educate drivers to buckle up - explain to me how officials argue seat belts for children ought to be optional at best? You can't because you know down deep what this really boils down to is the almighty buck. School districts want Albany to pick up the tab for new belts, Albany wants Washington to write the check. In the end children as young as kindergarteners go from being buckled up in moms car seat to an unsupervised, unsecured romper room that qualifies as school sponsored transportation. I promise you this issue is not going away anytime soon. Permalink Leave the First Comment Trackback (0)

With the recent accident with kids in the bed of a pick-up truck, another disturbing scenario comes to mind: What about school bus seat belts? I have two kids in two different schools. I just watched them both get on the buses. One bus requires the children to be buckled into the seats, and has another adult posted ON THE BUS to assure compliance. The other bus just has the usual "festival seating" rules (i.e. get to a seat and sit down). If I or you or anyone else can receive a ticket for children (or even adults) not being buckled into seats, how can school buses have up to 40 or so aboard without the same requirements? 21 Comments Add a Comment Member Comments Total Comments: 21 Page 1 of 2 Last cabnitman
I'm still trying to get over the fact that if you are over 5 years old, you can sit in the back of a pickup. If you are inside you need to be belted, but outside is ok.....bwtf

School Bus Safety Taken from The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Website For twenty-three million students nationwide, the school day the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. Before children go back to school or start school for the first time, it is essential that adults and children know traffic safety rules. Drivers:
  • When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking of getting there safely.
Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in neighborhood.
Slow down. Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.
Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street with out looking for traffic.
Learn and obey the school bus laws in your state. Learn the "flashing signal light system" that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:

Two Iowa school districts have grabbed the wheel in a drive to reduce public education's collective carbon footprint.
About 200 members of the Iowa Association of School Boards took a field trip to the Statehouse on Tuesday to lobby lawmakers for more education money. They showed up in a pair of hybrid school buses owned by the Sigourney and Nevada school districts.
Most school bus fleets consist of diesel-engine buses. The educators say the more expensive hybrid models are cheaper in the long run because they are more energy-efficient.
But there's another selling point.

Can Parents Control Bus Safety?
Thursday, February 21, 2008 filed under: kid Two Moms debate the issue. We posted How Safe is Your Kid's School Bus? to call attention to the number of injuries that occur on school buses every year, and what steps we can take to prevent them. This sparked controversy among many of our Moms. RealMomsHaveCurves spoke out: "I know when I rode on the school bus (every day, mind you) there was nothing to keep me and my comrades from hitting the roof in the event of an accident. They should have seatbelts, especially if you consider that many moms don't have an option to NOT put their kids on the bus." However, another Mom had this to say: "I disagree, because moms do have an option, take your own children to school if you feel that they are not safe."
