An Introduction to Scientology
from a critical perspective
(This Web page was founded on June 30, 1995. It was converted into a wiki on June 20, 2005.) Welcome to the Introduction to Scientology World Wide Web page. Designed to present a critical but open-minded viewpoint, this page is for the curious and the uninformed: those who have heard about Scientology [TM] and who wish to seek additional information about Dianetics [TM], its founder L. Ron Hubbard, and the organization that was his brain child. Perhaps you've read about Scientology in one of the many fancy publications of the Church of Scientology, or perhaps you've learned about the war between Scientology and the Internet in a magazine, newspaper, or Webzine. You may be curious about Scientology because some of its members are famous celebrities, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Jenna Elfman, Isaac Hayes, and others. (Cruise in particular has become more and more vocal in his criticism of psychiatry and psychiatrists, based upon his Scientology beliefs.) Perhaps you read Usenet, and you heard about Scientology from your favorite newsgroup. Whatever your reasons for coming here, rest assured that you have found what you are looking for. The links provided on this Web page will provide you with all the information you ever wanted to know about Scientology and its war against the Internet. Since the foundation of this Web site, I have occasionally received emails stating that I am biased against Scientology. I make no claims regarding the neutrality of the statements and opinions presented here. As with all Web sites, this is a reflection of my personal opinions only. I believe that Scientology is such a volatile, controversial, and polarizing subject that it is impossible to remain unbiased after you have experienced its actions first-hand. However, regardless of what I may think of Scientology, I have taken pains to make sure that the information presented here contains nothing but the truth. It is my hope that after you read these pages, you will want to become active in the struggle between Scientology and the Internet. Whether you decide in favor of Scientology or against it, always remember these words:

What is Scientology... Really?
The comments section has been removed as a result of some miscreant spammers who think they can use this site as their own personal billboard. In reality, the comments page was made read-only years ago when I tired of manually removing bogus comments from spammers. It's unfortunate that the many have to be inconvenienced by the selfish few but, until I can implement a bulletproof comment mechanism, you'll just have to send me your thoughts in an email. I have added a Questions and Answers page to this site. There isn't much there yet, but I have some stuff that should be posted soon. Write me if you have any specific questions you would like to see addressed on this page.
Overview
In what seems to me to have been a previous lifetime, I was a member of the Church of Scientology. I was affiliated with the organization for a number of years, trained and interned as a Dianetic Auditor, and eventually wound up working for the now-infamous Guardian's Office. One of my last official assignments took me to Saint Hill, Scientology's worldwide headquarters in East Grinstead, England. I am no longer affiliated with the organization and have somehow managed, for the most part, to steer clear of the maylay between the Church and it's critics for many years. Back in 1996 I became aware of apparent efforts on the part of the Church of Scientology to supress it's critics on the Internet. I constructed a critical page of my own complete with personal opinions and links to a number of other critical sites. While I have nothing against those who chose to be vocally critical of Scientology, I always felt that my page, as it was originally worded, didn't accurately express the full complexity of my personal opinions on the subject of Scientology.

THE RELIGIOUS STATUS OF SCIENTOLOGY:
IS SCIENTOLOGY A RELIGION?
By Irving Hexham Professor of Religious Studies, University of Calgary [First written 1978 - revised © Irving Hexham 1997] Introduction Before commenting on the religious status of Scientology I would like to provide the reader with the following information about myself to help them evaluate my comments. I am a practicing Christian belonging to the evangelical wing of the of Anglican (Episcopalian or Church of England) Communion. Before becoming an academic I worked almost ten years for the North Western Gas Board in England where I gained various trade and engineering qualifications. In 1967 I entered the University of Lancaster where I obtained my B.A. (Hons.) in Religious Studies under Professor Ninian Smart. From Lancaster I went to Bristol University where I completed an M.A. "with commendation," before going on to a Ph.D. At Bristol I was supervised by the Rev. F.B. Welbourn (Religious Studies) and Professor Kenneth Ingham (History). As a graduate student my work concentrated on the interaction between religion and society. My M.A. was on new religious movements in Britain centered on the town of Glastonbury. My doctorate dealt with the origins of apartheid as an ideology, Afrikaner Nationalism, and neo-Calvinism as contemporary religious movements. Since completing graduate work I have continued research into new religions in Africa, Europe and North America.

On the other is what the self-styled church has dismissed as a "pathetic" collection of "computer geeks": a maverick band of hackers who have launched an online war against the organisation. The hackers were infuriated by the removal from YouTube last month of a Scientologists' video clip featuring Tom Cruise. They have alleged that Scientologists forced YouTube to remove the embarrassing footage, in which the actor hailed the religion as "a blast". Cruise claimed: "We are the authorities on getting people off drugs, we are the authorities on the mind, we are the authorities on improving conditions ... we can rehabilitate criminals ... we can bring peace and unite communities."

Scientology Internet Hackers Plan Real-Life Protests at Church Locations
Thursday, January 31, 2008
  • E-Mail Print Share: The loosely organized group of hackers, who meet up and coordinate attacks through Internet Relay Chat channels, have set Feb. 10 for a wave of protests at Scientology locations worldwide. The first wave of attacks began earlier this month with hackers bombarding the church's Web site with traffic to cripple its servers. The church appears to have fortified its Web site since then, deploying technology that helps protect against so-called denial-of-service attacks. Pranksters also hammered the church's telephone network with phony phone calls and mountains of spam faxes and e-mails.

What is Scientology?
The real 'Church' of Scientology can be explained to someone with so many different answers and points of view. It's important to remember that Scientology is a business that has 'church' locations and members world wide. The "real" Scientology could be summed up with so many different short and long answers, it all depends on who you are talking to. As for what I personally believe and know Scientology to be? Well, the 'Church' of Scientology is a dangerous cult posing as a religion but in reality is a dangerous global scam. It seperates members from their families. They harass and " fair game " critics who speak out against them. It is tax exempt and ruining people's lives and actually killing some of them . It is currently accepted as a bona fide religion in the United States and sadly in most countries. With the recent help from groups like Anonymous and long time support from old critics, this con will hopefully come to an end and soon - before Scientology does more damage and harm.
So, what exactly is Scientology?
