In 1988 the Monastery moved to Largs on the west coast of Scotland. By Decree of the Holy See in 1992 the community was amalgamated with the Tyburn Nuns. The monastic hospitality of the community finds expression in the retreat wing overlooking spectacular views of the Clyde, the Cumbrae Islands and the Largs Hills, and in the Christian Heritage Museum. The special quality of the spirituality of the largs community is summed up in the words - Confidence And Prayerful Service. Story of St Benedictine Monastery Largs

If we could see in a magic mirror the country now called Scotland as it was when the Romans under Agricola (81 A.D.) crossed the Border, we should recognise little but the familiar hills and mountains. The rivers, in the plains, overflowed their present banks; dense forests of oak and pine, haunted by great red deer, elks, and boars, covered land that has long been arable. There were lakes and lagoons where for centuries there have been fields of corn. On the oldest sites of our towns were groups of huts made of clay and wattle, and dominated, perhaps, by the large stockaded house of the tribal prince. In the lochs, natural islands, or artificial islets made of piles (crannogs), afforded standing-ground and protection to villages, if indeed these lake-dwellings are earlier in Scotland than the age of war that followed the withdrawal of the Romans. Above an introduction from the first chapter from the History of Scotland, from Roman times to the present day. The history is split up in 33 chapters, and each chapter describes a certain time frame. This book originates from the

History
The UK History... The Scotland Menu... During the Hundred Years' War Scotland supported France. In revenge, the English invaded the Scottish lowlands many times. In 1482, Edward IV's army occupied Edinburgh. The Scottish kings tried to introduce a centralised monarchy as the Tudors had done in England but they could never achieve their aim. When the Protestant Reformation spread in Europe, Scotland soon adopted it in its Calvinist form. However, the Scots did not give the authority over the Scottish Protestant Church (Kirk) to their monarch, Mary, because she was a Catholic. Therefore, the Scottish Church was governed by a General Assembly. King James VI, the son of Mary, inherited the English throne on the death of Queen Elizabeth. However, the Scots retained their Parliament until 1707 when they were united with England. In the 18th century, Scotland suffered several Jacobite revolts in favour of the Stuarts. The English army subdued the Scots with great cruelty. In the 19th century the historical novels of Walter Scott helped to create a romantic image of Scotland not only in England but throughout Europe. Queen Victoria spent much of the year at her residence in the Highlands, Balmoral Castle, and this helped to make the monarchy more popular in Scotland.

Scotland
History
Scotland was first populated by hunter-gatherers who arrived from England, Ireland and Europe around 6000 years ago. They brought the Neolithic Age with them, introducing agriculture, stockbreeding, trade, an organised society and a thriving culture. The remains of elaborate passage tombs, stone monuments and domestic architecture, such as those found on the Orkneys, reveal that this was indeed a vigorous civilisation. Later arrivals included Europe's Beaker people, who introduced bronze and weapons, while the Celts brought iron. The Romans were unable to subdue the region's fierce inhabitants, their failure symbolised by the construction of Hadrian's Wall. Christianity arrived in the guise of St Ninian, who established a religious centre in 397. Later, St Columba founded a centre on Iona in 563, still a place of pilgrimage and retreat today. Around the 7th century, Scotland's population comprised a constantly warring mix of matrilineal Picts and Gaelic-speaking Scots in the north, Norse invaders in the island territories, and Britons and Anglo-Saxons in the Lowlands. By the 9th century, the Scots had gained ascendancy over the Picts, whose only visible legacy today is the scattering of symbol stones found in many parts of eastern Scotland. In the south, Anglo-Norman feudalism was slowly introduced, and by the early 13th century an English commentator, Walter of Coventry, could remark that the Scottish court was 'French in race and manner of life, in speech and in culture'. Despite some bloody reactions, the Lowlanders' tribal-based society melded well with feudalism, creating enormously powerful family-based clans.

A brief outline of Scotland's history
he following timeline shows the Scottish history from the ancient past until the present. It is divided in seven subsection, through which it can be navigated by using the seven buttons above.
Part 1: 10,000 BC - 410 A.D.
ca. BC The first residents (mostly fishermen and pickers) settle in Scotland, especially in the costal areas or along the rivers. ca. BC Families and small tribes immigrate presumably from Ireland. The inhabitants become aquainted with agriculture and cattle breeding. ca. BC Celts emigrate from Northern Ireland to Scotland. AD The Romans invide the British isles. England and a small part of today's Scotland become the Roman province of Britannia. The Roman governor Julius Agricola can extent the Roman sphere of influence up to the rivers Forth and Clyde. Emperor Hadrian erects the Hadrian's wall, a strong fortifications system, in order to protect the northern border of Britannia against the Caledonian tribes in the North. Despite the Hadrian's wall, there are frequent attacks of the Caledonian tribes (Scots and Picts) on Roman territory. The Romans try to establish further fortifications between Firth and Clyde (Antonine Wall), but the wall can only be defended until 183. Larger and more organised attacks by the Celtic tribes of Scotland across the Hardian's wall, while Saxons and Franconians start to raid the East coast of Britain.

The Curse of History
Historians have been trying to stress the social and economic side of history, but the movies and TV prefer bloody battles, and presumably the public does too. Scottish history is rich in battles, and Hollywood films by stressing them have exacerbated Scottish nationalism.
Miles Seeley, whose ancestors hailed from the Highlands, writes:
"At Culloden, a few of my ancestors, like Alexander, were late getting to the battle because they stopped to fight with another clan on the way. When they arrived, the English had won the day, but the MacDonells charged anyway and had severe casualties. According to clan legend, they later sheltered Bonnie Prince Charlie and were driven out of their lands as a result. The English, led by Col. Morgan (coincidentally my first wife's kin), labeled them horsethieves and they had a sorry time working their way west ahead of English troops. How much is truth and how much legend, I don't know."
My footnote: Stanford chaplain Rab Minto, a good friend of mine, was a dour and scholarly Presbyterian from Scotland, but his eyes lit up at the mention of Bonnie Prince Charles. I asked him if he realized what would have become of his church had Bonnie Prince Charles won. He did not care. He clearly would have loved to be with the fighting prince. Anything for a good fight. Scotland History
Inverness is often called the capital of the Highlands. Inverness means the mouth of the River Ness. It is an ancient settlement. In the 6th century AD St Columba is supposed to have visited the Pictish king Brude at his fortress there. Centuries later, in 1040, Macbeth is supposed to have murdered King Duncan at his castle, which stood on the site of Auld Castlehill. Early in the 12th century King David I (1124-1153) made Inverness a royal burgh. He also built a new castle. In the late 12th century King William the Lion gave Inverness 4 charters. (A charter was a document granting the townspeople certain rights). From 1180 a ditch and a wooden stockade surrounded Inverness. Inverness flourished. Many fishermen operated from Inverness and from the 13th century there was a shipbuilding industry there. Inverness was also a busy little port in the Middle Ages. The main exports were wool, fur and hides. By the middle of the 13th century there was a bridge over the River Ness. For centuries there was a wooden fort at Inverness but King David built a stone castle. This was largely destroyed by Robert the Bruce in the early 14th century but it was rebuilt early in the 15th century.

Creag Dhubh
click to enlarge "Cluny Macpherson" - Ewen MacPherson of Cluny, Chief of Clan Chattan, joined the Stewart army with about six hundred men but missed Culloden as they had been sent to guard the passes in the Badenoch. After the failed Jacobite rebellion of '45 the British Redcoats searched the highlands for leaders and members of the Jacobite army. Cluny's house was burnt to the ground and all his possessions looted so it became necessary for him to scatter his men and seek refuge Cluny, with a small party of men, headed towards Loch Ericht. On the sides of Creag Dubh he took refuge is a small cave. The cave wasn't much more than a hole in the ground with a fallen tree forming the roof but it was large enough to accommodate two men resonably comfortably. The image above (click to enlarge) shows how difficult it would have been to find the cave, which has become known as 'Cluny's Cage'. Even when you are almost upon the cave it is almost impossible to find (see image below). Cluny was able to light a fire as the smoke disapated over the hill top and was not seen. Cluny MacPherson was joined by Bonnie Prince Charlie, who remained there in hiding for about 5 months. It is said that the Prince asked for Cluny 's plaid because it was thicker than his. Cluny refused to give it up but offered to share so Cluny and the Prince slept under the same plaid .
