This page from the Book of Aneirin shows the first part of the text from the Gododdin c. 6th century. The people of northern Britain spoke forms of Celtic languages . Much of the earliest Welsh literature was actually composed in or near the country we now call Scotland, as Brythonic speech (the ancestor of Welsh) was not then confined to Wales and Cornwall. While all modern scholarship indicates that the Picts spoke a Brythonic language (based on surviving placenames, personal names and historical evidence), none of their literature seems to have survived into the modern era. Some of the earliest literature known to have been composed in Scotland includes:

John Buchan's classic steps
Gerald Warner gives an overview of the life and works of scottish novelist john buchan, who rose from obscurity on the merit of his talent If ever there was a classic example of a Scots “lad o’ pairts”, promoted from obscurity to fame by his own talents, it was surely John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir. As a writer of thrillers and serious literature, poet, politician and Governor-General of Canada, he epitomised the achievements of the... By Gerald Warner from Issue 4 published on 9/9/2002

The Reformation and its Influence The Reformation of the 1560s was to shape much of Scotland’s culture for the next 400 years. It introduced a Calvinism that emphasized the independence and dignity of the common man while, at the same time, displacing the language of Scots through the adoption of an English translation of the Bible, as a result of which Scots ceased to be used for formal prose. The Reformation’s celebration of the common man is prefigured in Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis (1540) by Sir David Lindsay, which attacks corruption in the Church and State. The scale and sophistication of Lindsay’s play testifies to a strong dramatic tradition almost none of which has survived ( see Drama in Scotland below The major literary achievement of the post-Reformation period was to be neither in Scots nor English, but in the Latin writings of George Buchanan. Buchanan was a poet of international stature, read and admired throughout Europe, particularly for his humanist dramas, Baptistes (on John the Baptist) and Jephthes , both written and performed in France in the 1540s. Buchanan was later to have significant political influence as tutor to James VI and theorist of the State; his writings, both in poetry and in drama, have continued to inspire modern writers in Scots such as Robert Garioch.
