By the early 1930s, with an increasing commitment to Communism, MacDiarmid began to write, in poems such as his “Hymns to Lenin”, in “demotic Scots”, something more akin to the actual Scots speech of the working-classes. MacDiarmid was initially supported in the project of creating a Scottish Renaissance by Edwin Muir, rapidly becoming established as one of the leading critics of contemporary literature. Muir, however, was to decide that English was the only possible route for the future of Scottish poetry and his own poetry, after a few early experiments, was written entirely in English. 14/06/07 at 10:57am GMT+1 Various Catalan authors decline to attend Frankfurt Book Fair Upset over government’s initial policy to not consider Castilian literature as Catalan culture Source: El Pas Section: Culture Comments Views Print article Email article Catalan Literature will go to the Frankfurt Book Fair without half of its better authors. Juan Mars©, Eduardo Mendoza, Enrique Vila-Kill, Sergi P mies, Javier Cercas and Carlos the Ruizes-Zaf³n, who typically write in Castilian, have declined to attend the event next October. The director of the Insitituto Ramon Llull, Josep Bargall³, who presented the list of the 130 invited authors, has indicated that these authors do not appear “by their own decision”. Some of these authors had shown their reluctance to attend the German event even before the policy of the Instituto Ramon Llull to exclude from the Catalan delegation the authors who express themselves in Castilian became known.
