Earliest Scottish literature
Before the incursions into Britain of the Saxons and the Scots , much of northern Britain (perhaps all in fact) shared a common Celtic language with the rest of the island, and there is considerable overlap, at least geographically, between the earliest "Scottish" and the earliest Welsh literature which was not then confined to the territory we know as Wales today, but rather to all of Britain south of the Forth However, the ethnic language of the Scots was Gaelic Gael was actually what the word Scot meant in English before c. . There was a common literary Gaelic language used in both Scotland and Ireland during the period known as the golden age of Gaelic. The countries shared a Bardic tradition where bards were trained rigorously for at least seven years before working for noblemen or chiefs.
