Recent molecular evidence suggests that pinnipeds evolved from a bearlike ancestor about 23 million years ago during the late Oligocene or early Miocene epochs, a transitional period between the warmer Paleogene and cooler Neogene period The earliest fossil pinniped that had been found is Enaliarctos , which lived 24 – 22 million years ago. It is believed to have been a good swimmer, but to have been able to move on land as well as in water, more like an otter than like modern pinnipeds. There has been longstanding debate as to whether walruses diverged from a common otariid-phocid ancestor, or whether the phocids diverged before a common otariid-odobenid ancestor. The most recent evidence suggest that the latter hypothesis is more likely.

Seals
Although there are 35 species of seals, only six types live in Antarctica: Antarctic Fur Seals, Crabeater Seals, Leopard Seals, Ross Seals, and Weddell Seals. However, these six species make up the majority of the world's seal population. With no natural land predators, such as polar bears or man, Antarctic seals behave much differently than northern sealsshowing little fear of man.
Seals are categorized into three families: true seals, eared seals (common to most zoos), and walruses (found in the arctic). All of the seals in Antarctica are true seals (no ears). Even without ears, seal hearing out of the water is as good as human's. In the water, their hearing is even better. Its theorized that seals use a type of sonar to locate food, much like what dolphins and whales use.
In addition to using sonar for navigation and locating groups of food, its believed seals use their whiskers as a form of radar. The whiskers detect movement in the water and allow the seal to zoom in a particular object. Through the use of their sonar and radar, seals can actually find food in complete darkness better than in the light.
As for their eyes, seals don't really see color but they are particularly sensitive to common sea water colors (greens, green-blues). Seals eyes have a silvery lining behind the retina, just like cats and other nocturnal/low-light hunters. This lining reflects the light back through the eye and increases the total amount of light absorbed by the eyeanother necessary feature when hunting in the dimly lit depths of the oceans.

They can be found throughout the Antarctic region, with some species living farther south than any other mammal. The Antarctic supports a much larger seal population than does the Arctic, in part because of the highly productive feeding areas that exist. Another reason is the lack of native predators such as polar bears, which also helps explain why seals in Antarctica show little fear of people. Of the six types of seals which are found south of the Antarctic Convergence, four of them are considered true Antarctic species: the

The US Navy SEALs are America's premier naval special operations force. SEAL is an acronym for SE a, A ir, and L and and highlights the arenas that SEALs can operate in. Whether the US military needs enemy ships destroyed in a fortified harbor or enemy beach defenses softened up, the SEALs stand ready to serve with their unique abilities. SEALs can swim or parachute into their area of operations and are proficient at not only underwater ops and demolitions but also reconnaissance and small-unit tactics. In the early 1960's, it became apparent to the US leadership that their armed forces needed teams of highly flexible units that could perform special and difficult missions in theaters all over the world. The US Army had the Rangers and the newly formed Special Forces; the Marines had Recon. The closest the US Navy had were the UDT's Underwater Demolitions Teams ), which focused on underwater mapping and demolitions. It was decided to take members of the already highly effective UDT's and turn them into a fighting force that could fight anywhere there was water. On January 1, 1962 the Navy SEALs (

There are three families of seals: the true seals, the eared seals, and the walrus. True seals lack external ears and have relatively short flippers that are nearly useless for walking on land. The eared seals, including the sea lions and fur seals, sport tiny external ears and can lift their bodies off the ground with their flippers. The stout-bodied

See Seals (disambiguation) for articles sharing the title Seals SEALS. The idea of testifying the personal presence or the agency of an individual on some particular occasion, by affixing the impression of his seal (Lat. sigillum, O. Fr. scel ) to the record or object connected with the transaction of the moment, can be traced back among the nations of the old world when advanced only a comparatively short way on the path of civilization. In the East the custom which has prevailed for centuries, and which is a practice at the present day, of using the seal as a stamp wherewith to print its device in ink or pigment in authentication of a document is parallel to our western habit of inscribing a signature for the same purpose. In the West, too, the impression of the seal has, at certain periods, had the same value as the signature; and at all times the connexion between the signature and the seal has been intimate in European practice (see Autographs and Diplomatic). But the western method of obtaining the impression has differed from the eastern method. With us, the notion of a seal is an impression in relief, obtained from an incised design, either on a soft material such as wax or clay , ,or on a harder material such as lead gold or silver . By common usage the word " seal " is employed as a term to describe both the implement for making the impression, and the impression itself; but properly it should be confined to the latter, the graven implement being technically called the

They can weight up to 600kg, a good portion of which is fat. As an additional protection against the cold the have a thin layer of very dense fur. The male is bigger than the female, up to 3m long, but is not seen too often on the ice. They are very good divers, able to dive down to 600m and hold their breath for an hour. Their only predator is the killer whale, sometimes seen off the shores of Antarctica. During those dives they catch and eat mainly fish, squids, octopuses, krill, crabs and shrimp.
