Printouts The Harbor Seal is a marine mammal that spends most of its life in the sea, but also enjoys sunbathing on rocks or on the beach. It is a pinniped (related to walruses and sea lions) that lives along shorelines in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, in temperate, subarctic, and arctic waters. Seals have a life span of about 25 to 30 years. Anatomy : The Harbor Seal has short, thick fur, grows to be up to 6.5 feet (2 m) long and can weigh up to 375 pounds (170 kg). The whiskers (called vibrissae) help the seal's sense of touch. The nostrils are closed in the resting state.

Harbor Seal
The harbor seal Phoca vitulina Harbor seals do not appear to make long annual migrations like some species of marine mammals. However, considerable local movements occur. Tagging studies have shown that juveniles move up to 150 miles (242 km) from their birth places. A radio-tagged adult was discovered 120 miles (193 km) from its tagging site. As more seals are being satellite-tagged, much more information is becoming available about winter and summer movements. General description: Harbor seals are mammals, that is they are hairy, warm-blooded, air-breathing animals which suckle their young. They weigh about 24 pounds (11 kg) at birth and gain weight rapidly during a month-long suckling period, perhaps doubling their weight. Average weight for adults is about 180 pounds (82 kg); males are somewhat larger than females. They are covered with short, stiff, bristle-like hair. Coloration varies, but two basic patterns occur: a dark background with light rings, or light colored sides and belly with dark blotches or spots. Harbor seals molt annually, usually in late summer. Harbor seals are well adapted to life in the sea. They are able to dive to depths exceeding 600 feet (183 m) and can remain submerged for over 20 minutes. Oxygen-conserving adaptations that allow such dives include reduced peripheral circulation, reduced heart rate, and high levels of myoglobin (muscle oxygen binder). Harbor seals are graceful and efficient swimmers as they use their hind flippers for propulsion and foreflippers as rudders. Movement on land, however, is slow and laborious.

Promoting stewardship and understanding of the rich marine life and unique marine environment of the Central Coast The Northern Elephant Seal, Mirounga angustirostris , is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5000 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours, and migrating thousands of miles, twice a year, to its land based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting and rest. The Piedras Blancas rookery, on Highway 1 seven miles north of San Simeon on the California Central Coast, is home to about 15,000 animals. The area is open for viewing every day of the year and there is no admission fee or reservation required. If there is something you want to know about elephant seals, or about other marine mammals that inhabit this area of the California coast, please ASK US To arrange for school visits or bus tours, please call the Friends office at 805

A white patch is common on the belly, and other irregular light patches are not uncommon. The head-to-tail length of the Mediterranean monk seal is about 240 cm (8' 2"). Females weigh about 300 kg (660 lb) and males weigh about 315 kg (690 lb). The Mediterranean monk seal is a coastal species. In recent times, it has used caves for rest and reproduction rather than the beaches it used historically. Cave usage seems to be a response to human persecution. The Mediterranean monk seal feeds on a variety of fish and cephalopods . It is active during the day. Virtually all births currently occur in caves and grottoes in sea cliffs. The Mediterranean monk seal occurs in groups or "colonies". The largest colonies have occurred on the Atlantic coast of northwest Africa, with one colony including as many as 300 seals at one point. The remainder of the seals have been dispersed through the Mediterranean and Black Seas in a number of much smaller colonies, usually including about 5 - 6 individuals (up to about 20 individuals) each.
