Seasonal affective disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder , or SAD , is a form of mood disorder or depression directly affected by the seasons . Sufferers of SAD find that their emotional state is quite normal during the summer months, but as the days grow shorter, colder and greyer during the autumn and winter , their moods seem to match the seasons. The seriousness of SAD can range from the mild ennui[?] of dysthymia to a serious attack of clinical depression , which can require hospitalization. It is believed that SAD is related to a lack of serotonin and that exposure to wide-spectrum artificial light may improve the condition by stimulating seratonin production. Light therapy appears to be effective in treating SAD, but the exact mechanism of the effect is still unknown. One recent trial seemed to indicate that shining a bright light behind the sufferers' knees would be beneficial, but when the trial was duplicated on a larger scale, the results were negative. Explaining Seasonal Affective Disorder:
Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD or Winter Depression is a type of major depression that reoccurs at specific times of the year. SAD was first noticed many years ago, but was not given the name Seasonal Affective Disorder until the early 1980's. The most common times for SAD symptoms to begin are September through November and the depression lasts throughout winter to early spring (March through May).
There is a less common type of SAD known as Summer Depression. It usually begins in the late spring or early summer and goes away in winter. Both forms of SAD seem to be related to changes in the amount of daylight during different times of the year. See my article on summer SAD.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is an affective or mood disorder popularly referred to as winter depression. People who suffer from SAD typically experience normal mental health all throughout the year. They only experience depressive symptoms during winter or summer season. Individuals who experience depressive symptoms during summer are said to have reverse seasonal affective disorders. Seasonal mood variations brought about by seasonal affective disorders are believed to be greatly related to light. SAD can become a serious psychological disorder and may even require hospitalization. Patients suffering from SAD tend to be suicidal. This disorder is similar in effect to clinical depression. A possible but disputed cause of this condition is the lack of serotonin in the body. Melatonin, a chemical released in the pineal gland The symptoms of SAD are similar to those of clinical depression or dysthymia. Loss of appetite, increased feeling of loneliness, melancholy and loss of interest in social interactions are just few of the depressive symptoms brought about by SAD.

The sun seems to leech out my energy. Stormy weather is by far my favourite. I have an intp friend who is also like this. Is this another of our characteristics? lauriep 10-31-2004, 10:25 PM It depends on other factors - like if I'm going to working outside in it or not.
Generally, sunny days are like socializing, I might enjoy it for a little while but it tends to quickly wear me out. Overcast days seem better for motivation - but I do need to see the sun occasionally or I'll get moody.
My favorite weather is when it's raining - thunderstorms are the best! Merkaba 10-31-2004, 10:33 PM I definitely love stormy weather best. Seasonal Affective Disorder
From SADwiki, the open SAD resource site for Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers Seasonal affective disorder , or SAD , also known as winter depression or winter blues is an affective, or mood, disorder. Most SAD sufferers experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the winter or summer.
Discovery
In the early 1980s, Herb Kern, a research engineer, who thought that his annual cycle of depression might be caused by the shorter and duller daylight hours in winter, approached doctors working at the National Institute for Mental Health in Bethesda, USA. They proposed a treatment where he was exposed to light, equivalent to summer sunlight, for several hours each day. By the fourth day his symptoms had virtually disappeared (Lewy et al 1982). This was the start of our acknowledging the condition that has come to be known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Medical Recognition
Seasonal Affective Disorder, or recurrent winter depression, is now considered a clinical subtype of major

What is seasonal affective disorder?
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a mood disorder characterized by depression related to a certain season of the year - especially winter. However, SAD is often not described as a separate mood disorder but as a "specifier," referring to the seasonal pattern of major depressive episodes that can occur within major depression and manic depression. SAD is a clinical diagnosis accepted in the medical community. Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, Chief of Environmental Psychiatry Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health Disorders, is the researcher credited with discovering SAD.
Who is affected by SAD?
Onset usually occurs during adulthood (with the average onset occurring at approximately age 23), and is four times more likely to affect women than men. According to the National Mental Health Disorders Association, approximately 10 to 20 percent of the population suffers from mild winter SAD, and nearly 5 percent suffer from a more severe form of the disorder.

    What you need to know
A cold and dark winter can trigger depression in people who suffer from SAD. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may help you weather the storm and beat your blues:
    • Add more D to your diet See a qualified health practitioner to find out if you are low in vitamin D, and if you should take large amounts under medical supervision to help improve mood and well-being Soak in the sun Spend more time outdoors to help improve the regulation of important brain chemicals that affect mood Try light therapy Reduce symptoms by using a full-spectrum fluorescent light during dark mornings or evenings Check out St. John’s wort This well-known herbal remedy may improve mild to moderate depression; take 900 mg a day of a standardised extract Work in a workout Get an hour of aerobic or anaerobic exercise three times a week in bright light to improve mood
These recommendations are not comprehensive and are not intended to replace the advice of your doctor or chemist.
