Sir Isaac Newton's first law states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion. When your vehicle is traveling, so are you. When your vehicle suddenly stops due to a collision, your body still tries to move forward. If you are not wearing a seatbelt, your body will move forward until you collide with something that is not likely to be soft. Seatbelts are proven devices that reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. The table below shows the percent of traffic fatalities that occurred among three age groups within each state in 2001. How does your state compare? SAFETY TIPS
Seat Belts and Air Bags save lives All of us - especially parents and caregivers - need to understand how to minimize risks by maximizing the life-saving capabilities of these safety devices. KIDS RIDE IN BACK. Infants should NEVER ride in the front seat of a vehicle with a passenger air bag. Children, typically ages 12 and under, also should ride buckled up in the back seat. CHILD SAFETY SEATS. Young children and infants always should ride in age- and size-appropriate child safety seats. The safety seat should be held properly in place by the vehicle's safety belts and the child should be correctly buckled in the child safety seat. A child who has outgrown a convertible child safety seat will need to ride in a booster seat for the vehicle's safety belts to fit properly. WEAR BOTH LAP AND SHOULDER BELTS. The shoulder strap should cross the collarbone, and the lap belt should fit low and tight. The shoulder strap should never be slipped behind the back or under the arm - this is a dangerous habit, especially in cars with air bags. MOVE THE FRONT SEATS BACK.

Why Seatbelts? We all know seat belts save lives, but teenagers today still do not wear their seat belts, and they are dying as a result.

SEATBELT SAFETY COMMITTEE Chairperson: Iris Carranza HOME
Why Seatbelts? We all know seat belts save lives, but teenagers today still do not wear their seat belts, and they are dying as a result. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that of the almost 6,000 young occupants who died in motor vehicle crashes in 1999, more than 66% (over 4,000) were not wearing seat belts. The percentage of young people who were unbelted in alcohol-related crashes is even higher.

19. Building Safe Communities
A summary of Achieving a Credible Approach to Increasing Seat Belt Use Among African Americans is available on the Web at www.mmc.edu/seatbelt_safety/.
http://www2.edc.org/buildingsafecommunities/vol5_1/reach.htm
Reaching African Americans Through Physicians Volume 5, Number 1 - Winter 2001 Although Americans are using seat belts in record numbers, usage is not consistent across all groups. Observational studies conducted during 2000, for example, showed that 69 percent of African Americans used safety belts, which is 5 percent less than white Americans. One of the reasons for differences in seat belt use is that, historically, much of the public education about occupant protection was developed for a "general" audience-but this is starting to change. NHTSA's Laurie Flaherty explained the importance of tailoring educational messages and strategies to specific groups within our society: As the gains previously made on occupant protection and impaired driving plateaued, we realized we had to segment the market and create new approaches to address specific audiences. Focus group research showed that the messages we had previously developed were not reaching African Americans. The research also told us that people listen to their doctors. A number of studies show that people are more likely to act on advice coming from their doctors than from other sources. That is why we went to the National Medical Association. The National Medical Association (NMA) is a professional association with a membership of more than 25,000 African American physicians. Working with NHTSA and the Department of Occupational and Preventive Medicine at Meharry Medical College, the NMA is developing educational materials that address the needs and concerns of the African American community. Both the NMA and Meharry have been active in this issue. Meharry's report
