Filming China's movers and shakers www.chinaview.cn Print BEIJING, March 15 The Chinese know far more about America than Americans know about China and a Hong Kong film company wants to change that before the Olympics by presenting icons of China, writes Jenny Hammond. With the Olympic Games fast appproaching in August, international audiences are hungry for information about "New China" - what makes it tick, who makes it tick and who will make it tick. The made-to-order film vignette and profile series, "Boy Meets China," introduces some of the country's most colorful, influential and potentially influential people: sports figures, superstars in the music, movie and fashion scenes, young entrepreneurs and artists whose works sell for millions in the Western world. The series - its footage at this point - is important "because the Chinese know far more about America than Americans know about China," explains Eames Yates Jr, MTV personality and host of the series. The 22-year-old New Yorker is the "Boy" who visits China for the first time.

Ann Lee and her vision of the heavenly kingdom to come, Shaker teaching emphasized simplicity, celibacy , and work. Shaker communities flourished in the mid-19th century and contributed a distinctive style of architecture, furniture, and handicraft to American culture. The communities declined in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Shakers derived originally from a small branch of English Quaker s founded by Jane and James Wardley in 1747. They may have adopted the French Camisard Ann Lee In 1774 Mother Ann came to America with eight disciples, having been charged by a new revelation to establish the millennial church in the New World. Settling in 1776 at Niskeyuna (now Watervliet), New York, the small group benefited from an independent revival movement that was sweeping the district, and within five years it grew to several thousand members. Although often persecuted for pacifism or for bizarre beliefs falsely attributed to them, the Shakers won admiration for their model farms, orderly and prosperous communities, and fair dealing with outsiders. The Enfield Shaker Community (1792-1917) The roots of Shakerism can be traced back to a small religious group who fled from persecution in France. In London, England they gained converts from the Quakers and Methodists. The new group, led by James and Jane Wardley, became known as the United Society of Believers. They believed in direct communication between man and God. Their religious meetings emphasized this communication. Members would sit in silent meditation until they received a sign or "vision" from God, at which point they would start to tremble, shout and sing. This behavior led their detractors to nickname them "shaking Quakers" or "Shakers" for short. The Society adopted this name officially and it soon became synonomous with quality and integrity.
