Life is either an incredible adventure...or nothing at all
Meet the Sharks - Up Close and Personal!
What is Shark Diving?
Shark diving, or cage diving , allows divers, researchers and film crews to view the extraordinary world of Great White Sharks in comfort and safety. Specially designed shark viewing cages provide adequate protection for the sharks from sport divers, while allowing divers total freedom of movement and panoramic views. Our shark diving crews are industry professionals who care about your safety and enjoyment. Equally important, they care about making our dives safe for the sharks. Is Shark Diving Dangerous?
To date, our most serious injury has been a sunburn. White sharks have many myths surrounding them. One is that they are killing machines attacking anything in sight. We have found that even at the height of a feeding event with multiple animals around a carcass, white sharks prove to be shy, slow moving animals. Our divers are amazed to learn first hand that these animals are almost gentle. That said, divers should always maintain a healthy respect for these awesome predators, in and out of the water!
Shark Adventures
Join us for one (or all) of these incredible shark diving adventures: The Farallon Islands - Great white sharks are closer than you think! This one-day Shark Dive departs from San Francisco, California and takes you to the Gulf of the Farallons National Marine Sanctuary.

Warming Waters May Make Antarctica Hospitable To Sharks: Potentially Disastrous Consequences
ScienceDaily (Feb. 19, 2008) See also: URI biology professors Cheryl Wilga and Brad Seibel analyzed the physiological adaptations and metabolism of sharks and other warm-water predators and concluded that an increase of just a few degrees Celsius could make Antarctic waters hospitable to some species. She also noted that ocean-going sharks have a high metabolism rate because they must swim constantly to aerate their gills, and they use a great deal of energy just to keep moving. The cold waters around Antarctica may slow their metabolism too much for them to survive. The waters around the Antarctic Peninsula remain within a few degrees of freezing year round, but in the last 50 years the temperature there has increased by 1 to 2 C, which is about double or triple the global average. Crabs, another predator that has been absent from Antarctic waters for millions of years, are also likely to make a comeback. The cold Antarctic water reduces their ability to flush magnesium from their blood, leading to magnesium narcosis and death. But the warming sea temperatures around Antarctica have already led some predatory crabs to move closer and closer to the Antarctic shelf environment. The Great White Shark
The White Shark: Introduction
Many paleontologists are very interested in living groups, because the study of the living organisms can both unlock their evolutionary history and provide important keys towards interpreting their fossil record. Some living groups have ancient histories. For example, sharks have existed as a group for over 350 million years! Today, sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) are represented by over 600 species that show a remarkable range of ecological and morphological diversity. Unlike the true fishes, sharks do not have internal bone, but instead have a cartilaginous skeleton. Although many people are told that sharks are primitive in comparison to other groups, this is not true. Many sharks are efficient and specialized hunters that have thrived for millions of years. This small exhibit shows an amazing predator: the great white shark Carcharodon carcharias ). The white shark is found in temperate waters throughout the world's oceans, and it is an important, though not common, predator in California's coastal habitats. Scientists from several organizations throughout California including the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, the Marine Mammal Center, the California Academy of Sciences , Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory, California Department of Fish and Game, and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at UC Berkeley, have been studying white sharks and their prey for several years in hopes to better understand their behavior and ecology.

Great White Shark Pictures: Nature, Wilderness Photos of the Great White Shark, Alaska and Underwater Wildlife
The main focus of the work of Klaus Jost lies on wildlife nature and underwater photography worldwide. Numerous trips in the last few years have led him among other things to the big bears in the wilderness of Alaska and to Canada . The results are photos of the nature , the wilderness , the salmons , the Brown Bears , and of the Polar Bears of the Hudson Bay . He is extremely fascinated by the bears.
His special interest lies in the Great White Shark Tiger Shark and Bull Shark , which are potentially dangerous to humans (any animal could be dangerous to humans) - and the whole underwater world. Decades of experience as a marine engineer and underwater specialist in several oceans of the world fit in very well with his work. Klaus Jost has spent almost 13,000 hours under water in large-scale harbour construction projects alone for professional reasons, and has got to know the fauna and flora of most tropical countries very closely. One aim of Klaus Jost is to document the types of sharks on the red list.
Especially fascinating are the photos of the albatrosses - they are flying artists, feeling extremely well with gales and towering waves - as well as of the other sea birds of the oceans.

Mission Statement
Founded in 2001, the ReefQuest Centre for Shark Research is dedicated to shark and ray conservation through its scientific research and public education programs. The Centre maintains research equipment and facilities, reference collections of fossil and extant elasmobranch specimens, a scientific library, elasmobranch data bases, and public education materials. The Centre oversees the thesis research of selected graduate students as well as publishes results of its own original research and those resulting from collaboration with students or colleagues in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, co-organizes international scientific conferences, and will begin producing its own series of scientific reports in late 2003. The main purposes of this website are:
  • to provide a resource for students and educators, to foster increased public awareness of the beauty, diversity, and vulnerability of sharks and rays.

White Shark Travels to Mexico after Release
The young white shark we returned to the wild in early February 2008 has traveled past the southern tip of Baja California and is heading toward waters off the Mexican mainland. That's based on data we're receiving from one of two electronic tracking tags the shark is carrying. This male shark is the first to carry a Smart Position or Temperature Transmitting (SPOT) tag, which is delivering near real-time reports on his position, updated almost on a daily basis. You can track the white shark's movements online on the Tagging of Pacific Predators (TOPP) website.

Introducing the ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo-identification Library
The ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo-identification Library is a visual database of whale shark ( Rhincodon typus encounters and of individually catalogued whale sharks . The library is maintained and used by marine biologists to collect and analyse whale shark encounter data to learn more about these amazing creatures. The Library uses photographs of the skin patterning behind the gills of each shark and any scars to distinguish between individual animals. Cutting-edge software supports rapid identification using pattern recognition and photo management tools. You too can assist with whale shark research - by submitting photos and sighting information. The information you submit will be used in mark-recapture studies to help with the global conservation of this threatened species.
