North Carolina Shipwrecks
The shipwrecks off of North Carolina are a unique and non-renewable resource that are in a constant state of change. The natural forces that work on North Carolina's barrier islands are also working on our shipwrecks. In many cases, the shipwrecks are the end result of the most extreme of those natural forces, while in other instances, the shipwrecks are the result of the most violent forces created by man. For the divers who visit them today, the wrecksites provide the foundation for a sensitive ecosystem of incredible diversity and beauty. It is easy to forget that they were intially born as a scene of destruction, sacrifice, injury and death. Please care for them as an ecosystem, respect them as a gravesite, and protect them as our heritage. Statistics, photos, and descriptions of diving on the following wrecks:

Shipwrecks on the coast of Mauritania
(English version) The Bay of Nouadhibou , seven miles south from the Mauritanian city, hides one the biggest ship cemeteries in the world. There are more than 300 wrecks around the harbour, resting for years and coming from all nations.
A brief walk through Google Maps will show you hundreds of skeletons piled here and there, at the biggest collection of rusty giant ships you could ever imagine.
However, there isn’t any magic or mystery in this squalid place. For years, Mauritanian harbour officers were so corrupt, that they let ships be discarded in the harbour in exchange of some cash. Discarding a ship is quite expensive for a company, so during the decades, lots of unwanted ships ended up in the Harbour of Nouadibou.
A few years ago, the situation was so out of control, that even Mauritanians started to worry. Nowadays there’s a project from the European Union to refloat all these junk and take them away, or destroy in situ (with explosions) the remaining wrecks.
The city of Nouadhibou is one of the poorest locations in the world. Right over these phantom beaches there are people living inside the huge merchant boats.

October 16, 2007 RETURN TO THE WORLD SCIENCE HOME PAGE Probing ancient shipwrecks with DNA Oct. 15, 2007
Special to World Science Studying an ancient Greek shipwreck, scientists say, they’ve found they can decode ancient DNA to learn about the original contents of jars sunken for over 2,000 years.
It’s a feat “no one thought was even possible,” wrote Maria Hansson of Lund University in Sweden, one of the researchers, in an email. The discovery “opens up a whole new field of molecular archaeology,” she added, as scientists could could use the technique to gain insights into ancient agriculture and trading networks.
Ancient Mediterranean civilizations, some of the world’s earliest, often used ceramic jars called amphorae as shipping containers. Invented by the Canaanites of the Near East in the 16th century B.C., amphorae took on varied styles in different regions and time periods, wrote Hansson and a colleague in a paper reporting their work.
Piles of amphorae often remain as lone, mute witnesses to ancient shipwrecks where the boats themselves have been long since eaten away.

Directions to Visible Shipwrecks
Most ships wrecked along the 70 miles of coast have been broken to fragments and scattered or sunk by storms that followed the wreck. Only a few large pieces of ships remain. Most are buried from sight for months at a time by surf or drifting sand, and may be uncovered later. This list locates some remains that are easy to find and usually visible. Day to day changes may occur to cover or remove any wreck listed. Laura A. Barnes (1921) : 4.7 miles south of Whalebone Junction, or 3.3 miles north of Oregon Inlet campground. Turn into Coquina Beach parking area. Walk over to the beach. Oriental (1862) : Seven miles south of Oregon Inlet campground, or 30 miles north of Buxton. Park at turnout for Pea Island Comfort Station. Board walk leads to wooden remains are sometimes exposed on the beach nearby. A wooden bow lies on the beach against the dune one mile north. Margaret A. Spencer (?) : Located fourteen miles south of Oregon Inlet Campground and 25-miles north of Buxton. Park on abandoned road strip one mile north of Rodanthe, walk 1.8 miles north on the beach. The wooden wreck is exposed, bottom up, at the surf line. LST at Rodanthe (1948) : Drive to the Rodanthe Fishing Pier, 15 miles south of Oregon Inlet campground, or 25 miles north of Buxton. Look north from Ramp 10 near the pier for the steel wreck in the water.

The state's responsibility is to protect, wisely manage and interpret this public heritage. Establishing a preserve is one way to accomplish these goals by making it easy for divers to safely locate historic wreck sites, by protecting the wrecks from accidental anchor damage, and by helping you to understand the life and history of each wreck. C HAMPLAIN II On July 16, 1875, The Champlain II headed north out of Westport, and a short time later there came a tremendous crash. It was soon evident to everyone on board that the enormous steamer had run aground.

On Tuesday, July 8, 2003, the steamship Adventure once more visited Kelleys Island almost 100 years after it sunk at the North Bay on Kelleys Island. A model of the Adventure made by model builder Roger Jensen of Martin Ohio was presented to Kelleys Island State Park Manager Mike Monette by Kelleys Island Audubon Club President Pat Hayes in a short ceremony. A case of oak and glass was made to display the model by Steve Sheridan of Findlay Ohio, who is a diver and charter boat captain. Dive slates developed by the Ohio Archeological Survey Team describing the wrecks of the Adventure , the Prince and the Hanna as they appear now will be available for lending at the Park Office. The display was funded by the DuShane Memorial Fund through the Kelleys Island Audubon Club in memory of Duke DuShane. Duke was a scuba diving instructor who taught over 1000 students to dive over his career and was a member both of the Archeological Survey Team and the Ohio Coastal Management's advisory committee that conceived the idea of the display. Contact was made with Roger Jensen through the Great Lakes Historical Society where he is a member of a group of model builders who meet at the Inland Seas Maritime Museum. He has put over 400 hours of volunteer time in the building of the model.

The Lure of Shipwrecks
Posted on: Sunday, 9 March 2008, 09:00 CDT Anglers wouldn't have many bottom-fishing opportunities in the deep ocean waters off Broward County if there were no shipwrecks. A three-year study by scientists at Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center revealed a rich reef fish community thriving around three freighters sunk in 250 to 300 feet of water compared with an almost barren natural rubble bottom nearby. Researchers David Bryan and Kirk Kilfoyle used a miniature, camera-toting remote-control submarine, or ROV, operated by Steve Van Meter to count fish around the wrecks of the Bill Boyd, Papa's Reef and Caicos Express and on the adjacent ocean floor. They found 615 fish of 42 species on the natural bottom, but nearly 51,400 fish of 65 species on the vessel reefs. GA_googleFillSlotWithSize("ca-pub-5440138744487553", "News_Main_300x250", 300, 250); "We were the first to look at these wrecks with an ROV," Bryan said. "We got to see things not many people have gotten to see. It was surprising we didn't find [nearly] anything on the natural bottom."
