Akira Yoshimura
translated from the Japanese by Mark Ealey Harcourt 2000 A book review by Danny Yee A portrait of a poor coastal village in medieval Japan, Shipwrecks offers more ethnographic detail than action. Isaku's father has sold himself into debt-bondage, so though only nine years old he has to learn the skills of an adult to help his mother support the family. Meanwhile, he and his fellow villagers hope for the rare O-fune-sama Shipwrecks is a coming-of-age story, but one with no psychological development or tension. Instead it describes, through Isaku's eyes, the techniques of fishing, salt-making, bark collection, and so forth, the rituals of festivals, funerals, ceremonies, and the everyday life of the village. This makes Shipwrecks easy to read and surprisingly upbeat given its bleak ending: it is a straightforward story told in a simple, limpid style. 29 January 2007

SEARCHES FAMILY TREES MAILING LISTS MESSAGE BOARDS w ith New Zealand connections Burning of the ship Blue Jacket
In 1869 the immigrant ship Blue Jacket made her return voyage to London from Lyttelton. She was loaded with wool, flax and gold, all treasures from the relatively new colony of New Zealand. Unfortunately she was not to reach her destination and caught fire near the Falkland Islands following which she was abandoned and sank in the South Atlantic. Kaitangata Mine Disaster
Seventeen years before the disaster at Brunner that killed 65 men, a similar event at Kaitangata in the south-east of the South Island took the life of 34 men and boys. They were innocent parties in an act of negligence that was to be the first mining disaster to occur in New Zealand. Brunner Mine Disaster
In the early morning of Thursday March 26th 1896, sixty five men entered the Brunner Mine on New Zealand's West Coast. They were never to be seen alive again. Here we present the story surrounding this disaster and the legal wrangles that followed it. Monarch
Often we concern ourselves with "those who never made it" and who today are only a memory recalled by the expression "Oh! Those poor people". Many events have occurred at sea and on voyages out where an arrival was "In the hands of God". The voyage of the Monarch and the trials experienced by her passengers and crew was just one of those stories.

      Introduction
Welcome to the West Coast National Marine Sanctuary Shipwreck Database. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has been working in partnership with the BRIDGE to provide teachers and students with an online educational activity to learn more about important shipwrecks found within the 5 national marine sanctuaries (Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Cordell Bank, Gulf of the Farallones and Olympic Coast) on the West Coast of the United States. The idea for this Shipwreck Database and the associated activities sprung from a collaborative effort with the Bridge to create a Data Tip of the Month highlighting our National Marine Sanctuary System. We wish to acknowledge the input from Bridge staff in developing this resource. We are pleased that our efforts to produce a special feature have resulted in the synthesis of much valuable information and the creation of a permanent database for your use. This data tip activity contains the following components:
      • Data tables containing 30 shipwrecks from each of the West Coast sanctuaries Navigational charts for each sanctuary Casualty reports and images from selected shipwrecks A Data Exercise where you can plot the shipwrecks in each sanctuary Questions related to shipwrecks in each sanctuary Answer Key

Historic shipwrecks are attractive to maritime archaeologists because they preserve historical information; for example, studying the wreck of Mary Rose revealed information about seafaring, warfare and life in the 1500s. Military wrecks that were caused by a skirmish at sea are studied to find details about the historic event and reveal much about the battle that occurred. Discoveries of treasure ships , often from the period of European colonisation , which sunk in remote places, leaving few living witnesses, such as the Batavia , do occur but only very infrequently.

It includes commercial vessels which were total losses or were declared total losses and later recovered, plus a few wrecks which were significant for other reasons (e.g. loss of life), but were later recovered. I am happy to share this with any and all interested parties, but as of Apr, 2000, it represents about 13 years of steady work, so if you use any of the material herein, PLEASE CREDIT to David D. or MS Word format (47mb, very large) In 1987, Florida began to develop a statewide system of underwater parks featuring shipwrecks and other historic sites. The shipwreck preserves have become popular attractions for skin and scuba diving visitors to witness a part of Florida's history first-hand. They contain not only interesting archaeological features, but also an abundance of marine life that make the parks living museums in the sea. Each site is interpreted by an underwater plaque; a brochure and laminated underwater guides are available from local dive shops. The parks are open to the public year round, free of charge. There are eleven parks at present, and several others under development.
    Future Preserves
If, in the course of your underwater explorations, you find a site that might be a potential candidate for a new Underwater Archaeological Preserve, you are encouraged to nominate it for consideration. The Bureau of Archaeological Research invites nominations for new underwater preserves throughout the State of Florida, whether located in inland waters, or offshore within Florida's territorial waters. A preserve should have public access, favorable diving conditions, and interesting cultural and natural site features. If selected, a site may then be designated as a preserve through a cooperative project between government and the public. The development of a new park is an excellent opportunity for a diving group to become involved in an underwater project with lasting results.

    Shipwreck Coins Reveal History

When is a United States coin NOT a United States coin? It's not a trick question, but an amazing fact of American history. The year 1861 saw the mintage of silver Seated Liberty Half Dollars at the New Orleans Mint by three sovereign governments: the Union, the State of Louisiana and the Confederate States of America. The recovery of a cache of these coins from the SS Republic provided the remarkable opportunity to determine which government produced each coin. And now you have an opportunity to acquire coins minted by each government!
