American Sign Language Minor and Course Sequence
Offered by the Department of Applied Psychology The Department of Applied Psychology offers a course sequence in American Sign Language (ASL). The sequence is:
  • ASL: Level I, E64.0091 (introductory, requiring no prior knowledge) ASL: Level II, E64.0092 ASL: Level III, E64.0093 ASL: Level IV, E64.0094
ASL satisfies the foreign language requirement in the Steinhardt School of Education. ASL can be declared as a minor (except for CAS) if the student takes the full four-course sequence. Other students may take the part or all of the sequence as electives. ASL I and II are offered each fall and spring semester. ASL III is offered only in the fall; ASL IV is offered only in the spring. The courses are listed under the heading of American Sign Language in the Directory of Classes and Albert.
Career Opportunities
A minor in ASL can benefit students in many ways. Students who know ASL gain insight about Deaf people and their language and may also gain an edge in employment opportunities. The ability to communicate with Deaf people is often seen as an asset by employers, particularly in the helping professions. Students in the arts profit because of the inherent physical expressiveness of ASL.

A sign language is one that instead of using sounds, uses combinations of handshapes, movements of the hands, arms and/or body, and facial expressions to convey information. Sign languages are most often encountered among deaf people, but American Indians were known to use a sign language to facilitate communication among tribes who spoke different languages, and people in situations where silence is desirable (such as covert operations) often employ some form of sign language to communicate.

Jump to: navigation search Sign language (also refered to as gestural language ) is a language where communication is through hand movement, instead of sound. As a language, the use of gestures and hand signals pre-dates the spoken word in most cultures, the major exception being the Leyrons of Malkus IX who actually developed a written language first. Sign language is permitted on Betazoid for the joining ceremony. When Victoria Miller and Lwaxana Troi were debating on who should officiate at the wedding, Troi proposed that her valet Homn would do the officating.
