Treatment for Acute Sinusitis
The primary objectives for treatment of sinusitis are reduction of swelling, eradication of infection, draining of the sinuses, and ensuring that the sinuses remain open. Less than half of patients reporting symptoms of sinusitis need aggressive treatment and can be cured using home remedies and decongestants alone.
Hydration
Home remedies that open and hydrate sinuses may, indeed, be the only treatment necessary for mild sinusitis that is not accompanied by signs of acute infection.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids and getting lots of rest when needed is still the best bit of advice to ease the discomforts of the common cold. Water is the best fluid and helps lubricate the mucous membranes. (There is no evidence that drinking milk will increase or worsen mucus, although milk is a food and should not serve as fluid replacement.)

New Sinusitis Guidelines
  • Sinusitis is classified as acute, subacute, recurrent, or chronic depending on how long symptoms last. Colds and flu, and allergic rhinitis, are the conditions that most often lead to sinusitis. Otitis media and asthma are often associated with sinusitis. Most cases of sinusitis can be diagnosed by examining the patient and asking them about their symptoms. Imaging tests such as CT scans are usually not required, although they can be helpful in showing structural abnormalities. Antibiotics should be withheld 10 to 14 days unless severe symptoms develop. These symptoms include fever, facial pain or tenderness, or swelling around the eye. The first type of antibiotic treatment tried is a 10 to 14 day course of amoxicillin or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. If patients do not respond or are resistant to these drugs, then other antibiotics may be prescribed.

Cystic Fibrosis and Sinusitis
Medicine has advanced the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) significantly in the past 10 years. Various measures that clear the lungs are becoming standardized. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as well as other support groups have been contributing not only to uncovering a cure but in helping the patient and their families as well. In 1989 the gene etiology of this condition was recognized and gene therapy is now being actively pursued. The CF patient fails to have normal mucus clearance. Thick tenacious mucus keeps bacteria from being cleared and prevents antibiotics from being effective. Clearance of mucus from the chest therefore is a paramount treatment objective. Various physical therapy methods include chest percussion, forceful exhalation, various dilators, postural drainage. The flutter device uses sound vibration to help reduce the thickness of the mucus. Inhalation of drugs that break down the structure of the mucus are in use. A similar thick fluid causes sinus infections. Nasal polyps are common. This is a type of bag of water where the liquid is maintained within the cell so that the cell expands and blocks the nose. A mucocele can develop, often in the frontal sinus. This is a similar bag of water within a membrane that expands and puts pressure on the sinus wall. Headaches in the frontal sinus area - above the eyes - is a common sign.

Acute Bacterial Sinusitis
Acute bacterial sinusitis complicates colds in both adults and children. From a 1% to 5% of colds have this complication. ( The major causes of the acute bacterial sinusitis are the bacteria called pneumococcus, Hemophilus influenza Moraxella , other Streptococcus species, and Staphylococcus ) Bacterial sinusitis also complicates tooth root infection, in which case it is caused by anaerobic bacteria. When a common cold has lasted for 7-10 days and is no better or worse, acute bacterial sinusitis may have developed and additional medical care may be required. ( Acute bacterial sinusitis requires antibiotic treatment to reduce the duration of infection and illness and to prevent serious complications such as infection around the eye, bacterial meningitis, and brain abscess. SINUSITIS
Click here to return to conditions listing. Please refer to our health precautions section before proceeding. THE PAIN AND FRUSTRATION of chronic sinus infections can be truly debilitating. One patient told me that her sinusitis felt like she was hundreds of feet underwater without a diving helmet. That's a good description of the swelling, congestion, pain, headache, and overall misery of a sinus attack. Many people suffer with sinusitis for years because they and their doctors can never identify precisely what's causing the problem and/or they don't take sufficient care to avoid repeated attacks. Unfortunately for some people, sinusitis can be helped only by surgery. But for most people, simple natural measures will help prevent recurrent attacks. The sinus cavities, which take up about a third of the skull, are believed to be a sort of air-control system for the lungs. Air is brought into the Sinus cavities, cleaned of dust and harmful bacteria by the cilia and mucus of the nasal passages, humidified, and then sent to the lungs. Because the single exit from the sinus cavities is tiny, only about as wide as the lead in a pencil, it's relatively easy to clog it. When mucus becomes thick, either in response to a cold or an allergic reaction, the single exit from the sinus cavity becomes blocked and the mucus builds up. The sinus cavity is the perfect place for bacteria to thrive, and thrive they do until you have a full-blown, painful, congested sinus. You can confirm that your problem is your sinus rather than a headache by bending over: If it's a sinus, you'll feel a painful throbbing; if not, you'll feel no change.

Conditions Sinusitis Also Listed As: Signs and Symptoms Causes Risk Factors Diagnosis ... Supporting Research Sinusitis refers to inflammation of the sinuses, which is generally caused by an infection (viral, bacterial, or fungal). The sinuses are air-filled spaces around the forehead, cheeks, and eyes that are lined with mucous membranes. Healthy sinuses are sterile (meaning that they contain no bacteria or other organisms) and open, allowing mucus to drain and air to circulate in the nasal passages. When inflamed, the sinuses become blocked with mucus and can become infected. Each year, over 30 million people (adults and children alike) get sinusitis in the United States at some point. Sinusitis can be acute (lasting anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks) or chronic, with symptoms lingering even longer than that. Signs and Symptoms The classic symptoms of acute sinusitis are listed below. These symptoms usually follow a cold that does not improve, or one that worsens after 5 to 7 days of symptoms.
  • Nasal congestion (rhinitis)  Nasal discharge (yellow or green) Postnasal drip (a sensation of fluid dripping down the back of your throat, particularly at night or when lying down)
