The Maharishi Ayurveda SM Approach to Sinusitis
The Raj program for sinusitis is conducted under the supervision of an Ayurveda Health Consultant and draws on knowledge from Maharishi Ayurveda, the world's oldest and most complete system of natural health care. Through its unique assessment of causal imbalances at the basis of a condition and its wide range of time-tested recommendations, Maharishi Ayurveda provides the most comprehensive natural approach for sinusitis available today.
Ayurveda Assessment of Balance and Imbalance in Sinusitis
A quick review of the sinusitis condition shows how many imbalances could contribute to the condition. Therefore a true healing of sinusitis will usually require a multifaceted, natural approach like the one offered at The Raj. Sinusitis usually starts with some infection or allergic reaction in the paranasal sinuses. Poor diet, digestion and elimination can create an internal environment in the sinuses that allows infection and allergies to more easily occur (see the "allergy" section in our web page for discussion of the Ayurveda approach to allergies). Stress, poor lifestyle, bad circulation and lack of rejuvenative regimens can deteriorate the body's immune response to invading organisms in the sinus area. We quickly see how many variables can predispose individuals to infection and allergy in the sinuses.

Sinusitis
What are sinuses? The sinuses are cavities, or air-filled pockets, near the nasal passage. Like the nasal passage, the sinuses are lined with mucous membranes. There are four different types of sinuses:
  • ethmoid sinuses - located inside the face, around the area of the bridge of the nose. These sinuses are present at birth, and continue to grow.
  • maxillary sinuses - located inside the face, around the area of the cheeks. These sinuses are also present at birth, and continue to grow.
  • frontal sinus - located inside the face, in the area of the forehead. This sinus does not develop until around 7 years of age.
  • sphenoid sinuses - located deep in the face, behind the nose. These sinuses do not develop until adolescence.

What is sinusitis? Sinusitis is an infection of the sinuses near the nose. These infections usually occur after a cold or after an allergic inflammation. There are three types of sinusitis:
  • acute sinusitis - occurs quickly and improves with the appropriate treatment.

Allergy Consumer Review now has a new interactive format. It is now a Community Forum/Blog, and while we are sending newsletters again, you will find you can post replies to any of the blog segments. It may take us a few months to get the format right, but I am attempting to return to our roots, which is much more community based and I genuinely want to hear from all of you. We have been restructuring the company and our official company name is Boston Green Goods, Inc. and the two biggest divisions of the company are AllergyBuyersClub.com and a "Green" division, called GreenandMore.com which will focus more on "Green" goods although occasionally both divisions might overlap. I grew up with solar panels on my house as a teenager in the 1960s and my first ever entrepreneurial venture in the 1970s was the "Energy Efficiency Corp" which consulted to large businesses on how to save energy. I never lost my interest in all things green, energy saving and sustainable and a recent visit to China was an object lesson in the grisly effects of pollution and trashing the planet. We hope to bring to the "Green" field the same clarity on the efficacy of green products as we have done for allergy control and healthy living products. Please visit GreenandMore.com

How to Treat Sinusitis with Traditional Chinese Medicine by Bill Schoenbart and Ellen Shefi
Sinusitis
is an uncomfortable condition that can be caused by a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection, or it can arise from an allergic reaction. Depending on the sinus cavities involved, pain occurs in the forehead, between the eyes, or in the mouth area. Typically, there is a yellow or green discharge from the nose, often dripping into the throat. In addition to the pain, the head feels heavy. The condition can become chronic, especially when a person has repeated colds.

There is little science and much individual opinion about the treatment of the common cold. We recommend nasal saline, p.o. garlic, horseradish and lots of water. Chicken soup is recommended as a treatment for the common cold. Its efficacy is probably related to the garlic. It is therefore an excellent treatment for it contains fluids, salts and the garlic which stimulates rhinorrhea. Antihistamines concentrate and increase the viscosity of nasal mucus and impair mucociliary clearance. They are therefore counterproductive. They may provide benefit for individuals with allergic rhinitis. Topical decongestants are addictive, but many physicians recommend their judicious use. Oral decongestants remain efficacious. Systemic steroids suppress immunity and are not normally prescribed. Topical nasal steriods are indicated for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Their benefit for infection and anatomic abnormaltities has not been investigated.

Diagnosing Chronic Fatigue? Check For Sinusitis
ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2003) See also: Sinus disease is seldom considered as a cause of unexplained chronic fatigue or pain, despite recent ear, nose, and throat (otolaryngology) studies documenting significant fatigue and pain in patients with sinusitis and dramatic improvement after sinus surgery. A Harvard study showed that fatigue and pain scores of sinusitis patients were similar or worse than a group 20 years older with congestive heart failure, lung disease, or back pain. "Chronic fatigue is a condition that frustrates both doctors and their patients since treatments directed at just the symptoms without knowing the cause are typically ineffective," said Alexander C. Chester, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center and principal investigator of the pilot study. "While sinusitis will not be the answer for everyone who comes to an internist with unexplained fatigue or pain, this study does suggest that it should be considered as part of a patient's medical evaluation." Through his private internal medicine practice, Chester questioned 297 patients, noting unexplained chronic fatigue in 22%, unexplained chronic pain in 11%, and both in 9%. While these numbers are consistent with previous studies, Chester observed an unusual connection between patients with chronic pain or fatigue: prevalent sinus symptoms. Sinus symptoms were nine times more common on average in patients with unexplained chronic fatigue than the control group, and six times more common in patients with unexplained chronic pain. In addition, sinus symptoms were more common in patients with unexplained fatigue than in patients with fatigue explained by a mental or physical illness, suggesting the syndrome of unexplained fatigue is more closely associated with sinusitis than are other types of fatigue.

A 35-year-old man was brought to the hospital after sustaining injuries associated with the tsunami in Southeast Asia on December 26, 2004. The patient had inhaled seawater when he nearly drowned. In addition, he had sustained multiple injuries, including a scalp laceration and torn right anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. He had sinus discomfort but no difficulty breathing. Computed tomographic scanning showed fluid and opaque material in the ethmoid (Panel A, arrowhead), maxillary (Panel B, arrowhead), and sphenoid sinuses (Panel C, arrowhead). (For comparison, normally aerated sinuses from another patient can be seen in the Supplementary Appendix , available with the full text of this article at www.nejm.org.) Summary
    Steroids for acute sinusitis
Acute sinusitis is a common reason for primary care visits; it is one of the 10 most common diagnoses in ambulatory practice. There have been suggestions, based on studies of allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis, that intra-nasal corticosteroids (INCS) may relieve symptoms and hasten recovery in acute sinusitis due to their anti-inflammatory properties. A critical systematic review of the literature found four well-conducted, randomized placebo-controlled intervention studies, involving 1943 participants treated for 15 or 21 days. The results suggest that there may be a modest effect with INCS in the resolution or improvement of symptoms. Only minor adverse events were reported. Given the small number of studies included in this review, it is recommended that further randomized controlled trials be conducted. The Cochrane Library (ISSN 1464-780X).

SUMMARY OF THIS WEB SITE By far the most common cause of chronic cough (defined as >3 weeks duration) in adults is post nasal drip (PND). PND comes from inflammation in the nasal passages (rhinitis) and/or sinuses (sinusitis). Other well-known causes of chronic cough (asthma, chronic bronchitis, gastric reflux, drug reaction) occur much less commonly than PND. PND causes chronic cough by mucus dripping down onto areas of the respiratory system which contain sensitive nerves (throat, voice box, windpipe and lungs). Because chronic cough is often thought of as a 'lung condition' by health care providers, PND as a cause is often overlooked (even though the medical literature documents it as the number one cause). There are several causes of rhinitis/sinusitis, most commonly allergy and infection. Many medications are available to treat these conditions, by both prescription and over the counter. Sometimes patients with chronic sinusitis don't improve with medication, and sinus surgery may be needed. Numerous are provided, plus a

The sinuses are openings in the bones around the nose. Four pairs of sinuses connect to small openings in the nose area. Normally, air passes in and out of the sinuses, and mucus and fluid drain from the sinuses into the nose. Sinusitis is usually due to allergies or infection. When sinusitis keeps coming back or continues for a long period of time, it is considered chronic. Causes of chronic sinusitis include a deviated nasal septum or other blockage of the nose that can trap fluid in a sinus. Dental infections such as
