skin cancer
There are three main types of skin cancer
  • Melanoma Basal cell skin cancer Squamous cell skin cancer
Of these, melanoma is the least common and most aggressive kind. There is a separate article on melanoma . The rest of this article is specifically about basal cell skin cancer and squamous cell skin cancer, which are collectively known as nonmelanoma skin cancer.
Understanding skin cancer
Skin cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up the skin . Normally, skin cells grow and divide to form new cells. Every day skin cells grow old and die, and new cells take their place.
Sometimes, this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the skin does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor
Growths or tumors can be benign or malignant:
  • Benign growths are not cancer:
    • Benign growths are rarely life-threatening. Generally, benign growths can be removed. They usually do not grow back.

Are you at risk for this malignant disease?
Skin cancer is the malignancy that is increasing in frequency more than any other malignancy.  Fortunately, it is very rarely fatal.  It can be disfiguring though and can take years to manifest.  Often the cancer on our nose at age 60 began as a sunburn before we were 18. I hope to accomplish two things here.  First to raise your awareness and give you access to great resources.  Second, to introduce you to me and my blog, Get the Skinney.com.  With that statement I have accomplished number two.  Now for the remainder of number one.

I love how the clocks always say 12:00 like we are stuck in time, some endless time warp where school spirit and classes never end. it makes me feel so scifi.

Skin Cancer
Skin Cancer And Your Plastic Surgeon Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 500,000 new cases are reported each year-and the incidence is rising faster than any other type of cancer. While skin cancers can be found on any part of the body, about 80 percent appear on the face, head, or neck, where they can be disfiguring as well as dangerous.
Anyone can get skin cancer-no matter what your skin type, race or age, no matter where you live or what you do. But your risk is greater if...
  • Your skin is fair and freckles easily. You have light-colored hair and eyes. You have a large number of moles, or moles of unusual size or shape. You have a family history of skin cancer or a personal history of blistering sunburn.

Font Font Skin cancer is a potentially deadly, but preventable cancer that affects approximately one million people in the United States. Cancer is a serious illness that necessitates early detection and treatment. The key to detecting cancer is being aware of the various signs. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and accounts for over half of all cancer cases in this country. However, different forms of cancer have different symptoms. Some common cancers are not as easy to detect. The symptoms are vague and closely resemble those of less serious conditions. Skin cancer often goes undetected because it appears in the form of a mold or freckle. What is Skin Cancer?

Skin Cancer: How to reduce the risk of getting a second one
What are the aims of this leaflet? This leaflet has been written to help you understand and deal with the risk of developing a skin cancer. It is aimed at people at increased risk, such as those who have already had one or who have heavy sun damage to their skin, or those on immunosuppressive drugs particularly after a transplant. It describes the main types of pre-cancerous and cancerous skin growths, and explains the importance of detecting and treating them early. It tells you how to reduce the risk of getting another skin cancer, and how these can be treated. Why am I more at risk from skin cancer? People who have already had a skin cancer or pre-cancerous lesion have generally had heavy sun exposure, and so may be at increased risk of getting more than one skin cancer.
How likely am I to get skin cancer ?

...
Is there any way to prevent the disease?

What does it look like? Melanoma can start as a new, brown or black, flat, freckle-like spot on the skin's outer surface. It can also begin as a change in the shape or colour of an existing mole or coloured spot. Melanomas tend to be dark in colour — browns and blacks — although some are a mixture of colours including red, blue and white. These tumours grow, so the key is to look for changes. What causes it? While the full answer still has not been unravelled, what is sure is that excessive sun exposure plays a leading role in the development of this type of skin cancer. Severe, blistering sunburns especially in childhood are thought to play an initiating role. However, recent research shows that sunburns at any time during life can also increase the risk. Who is at highest risk? While anybody can get melanoma, fair skinned people who have sun-sensitive skin that burns rather than tans are more likely to get this disease. People with freckles and red hair fall into this group, as do some blonds and those with blue or green eyes. Those with many moles (more than 50), or moles with an unusual colour or shape, or with large moles, have an elevated risk. A close family history of melanoma is another risk factor. Anyone with one of more of these risk factors should have a spot check by a dermatologist — it could prove to be a life-saving visit. People with no risk factors at all may still get melanoma.
