    beer soap
-If I make soap with beer, am I legally allowed to advertise/use the beer brand name in my signage/description of the soap?
(Also, beer soap is basically replacing the distilled water with beer, correct? Does this work the same for making say..a tomato juice based soap or pumpkin puree, etc..?)
-Does anyone know of a website that talks about using different kinds of alcohols in soaps.. I am interested in trying rum in soap, or does this smell just like bay rum fragrance(i can't think of what bay rum smells like)
Has anyone tried putting chocolate or sprinkles into soap? -Would a beer soap be considered 100% natural if I didnt use any scent or colorant.. has anyone made a beer soap, do they smell much..smell good? -What do you consider soaps that are almost all natural besides fragrance and/or mica/ultramarine to color, would you just figure out how much fragrance/color you use and minus that from 100%, so you'd have like a 97-99% natural soap. I have read they don't regulate the use of 'natural', so I could legally just say '99% natural' I do believe..? Although I want to be honest either way.

Soap Making
Basic Instructions
The Lye to Fat Table Basic Instructions
Water:
For best results, use rain, distilled or soft water. You should generally use 6 oz of water to 16 oz of fat. Another way to figure the same thing is: water wt=fat wt X 0.38. Don't worry too much about getting it exact, however, as this measurement isn't terribly critical. Lye: You should know a little bit about lye, sodium hydroxide. Lye is a very strong base and if you get it on you, you will find it's bad stuff. (Be sure to store lye where kids or pets can NEVER get at it.) You must use care in determining what utensils and mixing containers you use when handling lye. Use wooden or plastic spoons and enameled, plastic or glass bowls for mixing. (Lye will eat up Aluminum in a hurry. Also, lye instantly and permanently takes the shine off Formica. Formica is so sensitive to lye that it left timeless streaks across the table where I wiped a few dry crystals off with my hand. Now, with our table top and kitchen counter top ruined, Brendy ushers me outside when I mix my lye.) You would be wise to wear eye protection and rubber gloves when handling the lye crystals or the lye solution after you have mixed it into the water.

Soap making
From Appropedia
Jump to: navigation search by Terry Brandt "Cleanliness is next to godliness" is what I have always heard and is what the Ozark people believe. This is shown in the tradition of soap making. The homemade soap had many uses. Annie Fike, a neighbor of the Houghs who helped us, said, "That's all we had, a wash board and a bucket of lye soap. We could get things clean with it but it took lots of backbone." This soap was used for washing dishes, bathing and washing clothes. There are several variations of soap. One of these is soft soap. Soft soap was made like hard soap, but it was taken off the fire before it reached the stringly or jelly-like state. Stored in buckets, housewives would dip out what they heeded and used it much like modern day liquid detergent on dishes and clothes. To be extra elegant sometimes women added coloring or perfume before pouring out the soap to cool. To make about nine pounds of lye soap you need: lye - 1 can
water - 2 1/2 pints
or
ash lye - 2 pints
fat - about 6 pounds
pan wooden spoon or paddle
stove or outside fire You can use either wood ash lye or concentrated lye. If you use wood ash lye, the lye is already deluted with the water, but it will need to be strong enough to eat up the fat. If strong enough, about a quart of ash lye for six pounds of fat would probably be enough. Concentrated lye comes in cans.

    Introduction
    Why?
Soap gets rid of some of the germs and bacteria that may cause diseases and it makes things look/smell better and allows them to be reused with out contamination.
What is soap? Soap is made of lye (a liquid solution of potash) and waste fats. It takes three main steps: 1. Making the Lye 2. Rendering the Fat 3. Mixing the lye and fat together and boiling the mixture. (Actually the soap making step) Soap is not found in nature; but it can be created by a very simple process called saponification. Saponification is the process that takes place when a fatty acid comes in contact with an alkali. When fats or oils, which contain fatty acids are mixed with a strong alkali, the alkali first splits the fats or oils into their two major parts: fatty acids and glycerin. After this splitting of the fats or oils, the sodium or potassium part of the alkali joins with the fatty acid part of the fat or oils. This combination is called soap or the potassium or sodium salt of the fatty acid. This web page is designed teach you how to make soap in a rural setting. We attempted to make soap, in our kitchen using bacon grease and lye (bought from the store) and there were a few problems (described in the troubleshooting section) and since we did not have time to troubleshoot our process it was unsuccessful. The production of safe soap will take time and experience, believe me- we are not even there yet. We would recommend making soap with small quantities until you get the method completely right so as not to waste materials and money.

Font Font Soap making is an art, that basically, only requires the use of five simple ingredients; soap, water, lye, fat and oil. However, if you want to make soaps that are more luxurious, you will want to add some extra ingredients like, coloring dyes and scented oils. Learning the art of soap making will allow you to make your own, pure, all natural soaps from the comfort of your home. I guarantee, that you'll sleep better at night knowing that you and your family are using soaps and shampoo's contain herbs and all natural ingredients that will help improve the overall health of your families skin and hair.

    Melt and Pour Soap
    Ingredients

    1 pound vegetable glycerin soap
Ice cube trays or other molds—flexible is good!
Glitter, plastic toys, anything cool you want to put inside
    Scent (if desired)
Optional: botanical or herbal additives like cinnamon, ginger, green tea, oatmeal…
    1. Cube soap and melt it in a large Pyrex measuring cup in a saucepan of boiling water. Try not to stir it too much! Skim the foam off the top if any appears.
    2. When it is fully melted, add scent or glitter, if you’re using it. (Try about 15-20 drops of scent to a pound of soap, or experiment!) If you are using herbals, stir them in now. Don’t overload the soap with extras or they will sink to the bottom of the mold.
    4. Gently ease the soaps out of the molds and wrap in plastic or Saran Wrap.

    Loofah Soap Instructions
    By Milksuds at 02/08/08 14:40
Loofah soap is a beautiful exfoliating soap. Loofah soap instructions follow any soap recipe directions and you can use either cold process soap recipes or melt and pour recipes. The key to making loofah soap is the mold you pour the soap into. I tend to only make cold-process soap and enjoy how this soap looks with either white soap base or a light natural color (like from a spice or pigment). These soaps are unique and are good sellers during the dry winter seasons when customers are trying to get rid of unwanted dead skin. Loofah Soap Instructions are outlined: Equipment: PVC pipe (approx. 3 or 4 inch diameter size) lengths are determined on quantity of soap in recipe
