How Soap is Made
Here at The Soap Kitchen we make all our own soaps using what is known as the 'Cold Process' method. The phrase is slightly misleading in that the process is not actually cold, although following the initial melting of any solid oils such as coconut and palm oils, no further external heat is used. Soap is made by chemical reaction. Many people have the picture in their mind that soap is made by endlessly stirring a bubbling mixture in a large pan over heat and although there is a 'hot process' method which might have similarities to this, most books and instructions on natural soap-making only cover the 'cold process' method which is by far the easiest and simplest method. Without going into the precise chemistry of soap-making, basically, soap is made from combining an acid (oil/s) and an alkali (sodium hydroxide) in precise proportions. It is easy to see what oils and fats different soaps are made from. For instance, if you make soap from coconut oil the name for the soap which will appear on the ingredients list will be 'sodium cocoate', palm oil is 'sodium palmate' and so-on. If you look at the ingredients listings of soaps you can fairly easily see what oils they were made from.

    Soap Making
Our soap is made using a technique called "cold process". This is the chemical reaction between an alkali (sodium hydroxide) and fatty acids (fats and oils). Just enough heat is used to melt the fats and oils. The alkali solution is then added and the blend is stirred thoroughly. The chemical process is called "saponification". It is during this process that the separate ingredients combine and turn into soap and glycerin.
After the solution has thickened and begun to turn into soap, we add various colors, fragrances, grains and botanicals to enhance the formula. We are very careful with our measurements to make sure that there is no excess alkali when the soap is completed. Instead, the end product is a very gentle, true soap with delightful fragrances and other goodies-a real treat for your skin Our soap is different from what is generally found commercially. The naturally occurring glycerin is often removed by commercial makers and used to create lotions, leaving the soap more drying. We use food grade oils and other high quality ingredients. Often commercial makes use waste oils or animal fats.
We believe that your skin deserves only the best.

    Soap Making Processes
Melt and Pour lye soap. There is no such thing as a soap made without lye but not everyone wants to work with lye beacause it is highly caustic and care should be taken with storage and handling . If you are one of these people there is a solution,,, you can start with a soap base where the lye has already been combined with the fats. This method is called "the melt and pour" method. The obvious advantage to this is the fact that you do not have to store or handle the lye and, if you do not wish to choose your own combinations of oils/ingredients for the base soap, it is a less complex way to go. It is exactly as it says - you melt it, add the colors, scents, and anything else and then pour into molds to set.
Cold process lye soap. This method does not require and external heat source to force the saponification to begin. The lye mixed with the appropriate amounts of fats/oils starts it's own saponification process. Different amounts of lye are needed for different oils so make sure you refer to a lye calculator when you use this method for soap making. Also, be sure to follow proper
