SOCCER HISTORY
The contemporary history of football spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the world's first football association was founded - The Football Association in England. Both forms of football stemmed from a common root and both have a long and intricately branched ancestral tree. Their early history reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees and to which the historical development of football is related and has actually been traced back. Whether this can be justified in some instances is disputable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that playing a ball with the feet has been going on for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason to believe that it is an aberration of the more "natural" form of playing a ball with the hands. Another form of the game, also originating from the Far East, was the Japanese Kemari, which dates from about 500 to 600 years later and is still played today. This is a type of circular football game, far less spectacular, but, for that reason, a 'more dignified and ceremonious experience, requiring certain skills, but not competitive ' in the way the Chinese game was, nor is there the slightest sign of struggle for possession of the ball. The players had to pass the ball to each other, in a relatively small space, trying not to let it touch the ground.

4. Soccer History - Early Ball Games
Origins of soccer, from the early kicking games to mob football.

History of Soccer Soccer Players Soccer Quotes ... Soccer History Early kicking games
All throughout history, many ball games have emerged as well as perished independently to one another, often leaving us with nothing but speculations. Considering that many of these games were impulsive and had few or no regulations, it is likely that they also were quite violent. The roughness of these early games surely must have demanded involvement of the legs, for kicking.
We have to emphasize the difference between such scuffles and today's skillful game. Even although modern football evolved from rugby, a major distinction stands between the two - the feet are not only used for kicking but also for controlling and moving the ball (dribbling). Using body parts other than the feet, like the head or chest, is another factor suggesting the development advanced technical skills.
While most ancient ball games had no proven relation to rugby or simply diminished ignominiously long ago, they certainly must have produced skillful players or artisans, much like the superstars of today. Therefore, we must acknowledge these as predecessors of the world's most popular sport. Far East: Tsu Chu and Kemari
Mediterranean: Episkyros and Harpastum

America: Pok-A-Tok, Pasuckuakohowog and Asqaqtuk

Hleb is a wasted player
Hleb has not endeared himself to many Arsenal fans after being discovered that the he has been secretly hawking himself to other clubs. Be that as it may, and do feel free to throw all the derogatory stuff possible at him, but it is an inescapable fact that he is one of the players that redefined Arsenal's midfield as a tower of strength and possession. His twinkling toes might not have yielded many goals but as long as Helb was on the field there was the potential for others to score. But his role on the field was doomed to be an anomaly. He would never replace Bergkamp as the definitive slot striker. And he did not have the speed to play wide. Nor did he have the holding capabilities of Gilberto. Wenger never defined the position Hleb actually played. This would not be problematic in itself, as his elusiveness could have proven dividends. However, unlike Fabregas who firmly established himself as the locus of the attack, Walcott's grooming as a winger, and Flamini's industry which saw him naturally usurping Gilberto, Hleb's ghost in the machine approach never caught on. Flamini's departure is a real loss and he will be hard to replace. Hleb if he should go, leaves a void in those enviable possession stats. However what he accomplished at Arsenal remains something of an enigma. Posted by Shourin Roy at 5:27 PM Permalink Comments (0) TrackBacks (0)

There have been many claims that it came from the Greeks, Romans, Japanese, and Chinese, but no one knows for sure. In Japan , there has been evidence of a ball-kicking game earlier than 206 B.C. There were signs of a lined field, which was used to play some sort of game. The game used a ball and appeared to be popular. Historians have discovered that around, 250 B.C. Han military members played some sort of skill building game. This game involved kicking a ball into a net. It was originally used for military training, but later became less of a drill and more of a game. The ancient Celtics and Vikings appeared to have played a game resembling soccer. However, the game that they played was not so much a game, but more a mob scene. The game that most closely resembles soccer today was played by the Greeks and Romans. For them it was called Harpastum. It was also used mainly for war purposes. However, when the Romans expanded their empire across the world, they spread Harpastum as well. They brought the game to the

During the second part of the 19th century in England, rugby as well as most sports experienced a massive boost in popularity. This was mostly an effect of the Industrial Revolution, which drew people in cities and factories, depriving them from outdoor activity. Recreation became common and people turned to sport on Sundays, in addition to their religious activities. British traders, sailors, and workers carried the sport all over the world (and especially their colonies). The game of soccer officially emerged during the late 19th century in England, where a variety of ball games had already developed, all of which involved both handling and kicking. At a meeting of the London Football Association (FA) in 1863, the game of football was split into rugby football (the parent sport of American football), in which handling and carrying the ball was allowed, and association football, which banned the use of the hands. The FA established the first set of rules for soccer, which at that time, was played competitively (or officially) only in private schools and universities. Soon after, amateur competition grew widely popular amongst British blue-collard workers. The FA Cup, an annual tournament first organized in 1871, sparked massive interest in soccer throughout Britain. The tournament, which is still played today, starts off with a large pool of teams and climaxes with the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London. Working-class people followed, participated and bet on matches from the FA Cup. In 1885, the FA reluctantly (after four years of debate) recognized the legitimacy of professional players. Early professional footballers were paid little more than the average workers who would pay to watch them. In 1888, 12 clubs from England founded the Football League, the first professional league competition.

Games similar to soccer were played by many ancient cultures. There is no evidence to claim with absolute certainty where or exactly when soccer first began. However some evidence suggests that early varieties of the game were played more than 2000 years ago. An early form of the game has been traced back to 1004 B.C. in Japan where players kicked a ball on a small ‘marked’ field. The Munich Ethnological Museum in Germany has text in Chinese from 50 B.C. that writes of games sounding similar to soccer that were played between China and Japan. Further evidence suggests that a ‘soccer’ game was played in 611 A.D. in the ancient city of Kyoto in Japan. The ancient Romans also played a game that appears to resemble the game soccer as we know it today. The Olympic Games in ancient Rome featured a 27 man side that vigorously competed in a type of ‘soccer’ game where after some 45 minutes more than half the team needed medical attention. Historians had little interest in preserving the origins of soccer, and it is not really known how soccer spread to the various countries of the world. What is known, is when the game did finally get to England the games reputation was so bad that the government passed some laws against soccer. In fact it is documented that during the reign of King Edward (1307 – 1327), laws were passed that would imprison anyone caught playing soccer. King Edward's proclamation stated:
