It feels like where ever there was a TV this week, it was on ESPN, and a commercial with David Beckham was on. And when the last night's game with the LA Galaxy and Chelsea FC was on - I bet even your TV was on even just for a peak.
Even when David Beckham was sitting on the bench with his injured ankle, the "Beckham Cam" would show him. When he was warming up, the audience was roaring and cheering, and what was actually happening in the game was irrelevant at the time - David Beckham was the enterntainment of Saturday night.
The only 12 minutes of David Beckham on the field were reported as American Soccer History.

Everyone Plays Balanced Teams Open Registration Positive Coaching Good Sportsmanship Football - Soccer History History of Soccer
Part 1: The early origins of Soccer
Football in various forms had been played through-out the world long before the nineteenth-century middle-class mania for rules and regulations. In America it had been popular among native peoples before the Europeans arrived, and it maintained this popularity as the Europeans brought their village games with them to the New World. "Soccer", or association football, from which the name soccer was later derived by Americans.
In reality there was no first game of football, for its origins go back to the beginning of recorded history: in preindustrial societies it was often a "mob" game of village against village, lacking written rules and celebrated as part of a fertility rite or to mark particular seasons of the year; more sophisticated kicking games were to be found in societies as diverse as ancient China (which boasts the oldest rules resembling today's games).
As Britain changed from an agrarian to an industrial society beginning about 1750, soccer was adapted to fit suit the narrow streets and hard surfaces of the new urban communities. Improvements in roads and transportation allowed games to be played outside the local village, and as steam trains started to link the ever-growing towns of Britain, it became possible to play on a national basis the games that the middle class favored and promoted.

The World's Most Beloved Sport - The History of Soccer
By: Rebecca Blain
While it is undisputed that the origins of modern soccer, or football, originated in Britain, there is a great deal of evidence that points to this beloved game as having an older history.
Where did the game of soccer really begin, and how old is it? To understand how many different varieties of "soccer" there are, you need to understand a bit about the older versions of the game and how they have evolved.
Below, you will find a list of the predominant cultures that had a variety of soccer, and learn how each one differs from what we play today. And no, they never used anything like Lotto shinguards back then either!
  • Chinese Soccer History Japanese Soccer History Egyptian Soccer History Greek/Roman Soccer History British Soccer History
Chinese Soccer History
To many, this is the oldest version of soccer to exist. However, there is quite a lot of controversy of whether or not this is the oldest, or Japan's version is the elder. The Chinese version of the game, originally named "Tsu Chu", involved players on a field that had to hit a leather ball stuffed with fur into a small hole. Like Soccer, no hands were permitted during the play of the game, and it was considered an honor to be a member of a team.
The Emperor of the Han Dynasty, when the game was developed, was an avid player and fan, and spread the popularity of this game all over China during his reign. This roughly dates back to 300 B.C., although there is controversy on the subject of dating, which could result in the origins of the game being as far back as 5000 B.C. Regardless, this version of Soccer is extremely old. Despite that, there is still a version of Tsu Chu played today. While the two games are similar, Tsu Chu has had no effect on the modern version of the game, as it was originally developed and created for play in Great Britain.

SPORTING WARRIORS FC ZIMBABWE SOCCER ASSOCIATION (W.A). Chairman`s report
It was a long and trying battle for our soccer team to get to this level we are at now. It all started like a drinking and get together excuse for the Zimbabweans in Western Australia. We developed into a more organised social group with some sort of a leadership structure with myself as chairman. This gathering at this stage had no membership neither a constitution. It was, at the time, taken for granted that being a Zimbabwean sufficed to be a member. This sort of approach presented us with discipline problems. To try and hold a reasonable meeting with a group of people who did not feel obliged to listen to one another was really trying.
We were meeting then in Victoria East Park every Saturday. I have to point out that even though we had discipline problems, it was really refreshing and fun to be able to feel like one is back home at one’s favourite drinking hall close to the soccer pitch watching the local "zvidhakwa" chase the ball. Where the most common first aid treatment was a deep gulp from one’s favourite brown bottle. This would be an effort to cure an ankle sprain. For our financial needs to pay for the grounds and the inevitable drinks (beer), we did adhoc money collections as the need arose. Much effort was also put in trying to get ourselves registered with the social league of Perth. This proved difficult, we were late for registration and we also needed insurance to cover the players. I was also participating in the formation and registration of ZAWA.

Soccer History
Early Soccer History Early kicking games
Considering that many of these games were impulsive and had few or no regulations, it is likely that they also were quite violent. The roughness of these early games surely must have demanded involvement of the legs, for kicking. We have to emphasize the difference between such scuffles and today's skillful game. Even although modern football evolved from rugby, a major distinction stands between the two - the feet are not only used for kicking but also for controlling and moving the ball (dribbling.) Using body parts other than the feet, like the head or chest, is another factor suggesting the development expert technical skills. While most ancient ball games had no proven relation to rugby or simply diminished ignominiously long ago, they certainly must have produced skillful players or artisans, much like the superstars of today. Therefore, we must acknowledge these as predecessors of the world's most popular sport. Far East: Tsu Chu and Kemari
Mediterranean: Episkyros and Harpastum

America: Pok-A-Tok, Pasuckuakohowog and Asqaqtuk
Middle Ages
During the Middle Ages Europe was the stage for violent town games known universally as Mob Football. It is very surprising to notice the progress of ball games in this historical period and consider their violent upturn. In contrast to the ball games of Ancient times, authorities often prohibited and opposed their practice.
