While these hierarchies are not universal to all societies, they are the norm among state-level cultures (as distinguished from hunter-gatherers or other social arrangements). According to Peter Saunders, in modern Western societies , stratification depends on social and economic classes comprising three main layers: upper class middle class , and lower class . Each class is further subdivided into smaller classes related to occupation. The term stratification derives from the geological concept of strata, or rock layers created by natural processes.

Social stratification is the "division of society into two or more categories of people ranked high to low relative to one another." (Haviland, 2002, p. 492). Stratification is present in almost every type of culture except in egalitarian societies. The purpose of stratification is to divide the community into groups based on responsibility and privileges. There are many forms stratification can take: class systems, caste systems, feudalism, etc. In order to appreciate the difference between stratification systems a side-by-side comparison needs to be made.

Social stratification
ज्ञानकोश: - The Indological Knowledgebase Social stratification is a sociological term for the hierarchical arrangement of social classes castes , and strata within a society . Oftentimes this is arranged in terms of economics ; however, it can be used in reference to any segment of a socioeconomic class edit
Critical overview
Social stratification is regarded quite differently by the principal perspectives of sociology. Proponents of structural-functional analysis suggest that since social stratification exists in all societies, a hierarchy must therefore be beneficial in helping to stabilize their existence. Conflict theorists consider the inaccessibility of resources and lack of social mobility in many stratified societies. They conclude, often working from the theories of Karl Marx , that stratification means that working class people are not likely to advance socioeconomically, while the wealthy can continue to exploit the proletariat generation after generation.

SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
Some definitions: (Social) stratification : ranking some individuals and groups as more deserving than others; from this a social hierarchy is formed which is a set of ranked statuses from highest to lowest. (The word social is in parentheses because in sociology it is often presumed you are referring to the social, i.e. groups of people interacting together rather than one individual by themselves.)
or
(Social) stratification : a form of inequality in which categories of people are systematically ranked in a hierarchy on the basis of their access to scarce but valued resources.
This is different from social inequality which is a condition in which people have unequal access to wealth, power and prestige; and social differentiation which is a process in which people are set apart for differential treatment by virtue of their statuses, roles, and other social characteristics.
You can substitute the word social with more specific characteristic such as age, race/ethnicity, gender, etc...

Social Stratification Sociologyindex Sociology Books 2008 Social stratification lies at the core of society and of the discipline of sociology. Social inequality is a fundamental aspect of virtually all social processes, and a person's position in the stratification system is the most consistent predictor of his or her behavior, attitudes, and life chances. Social stratification links almost all aspects of society together, and therefore understanding what is happening to social stratification helps us understand a wide range of other changes in society Stratification is a social division of individuals into various hierarchies of wealth, status and power. There is disagreement about how to describe stratification systems, some sociologists favour the concept of class and others discuss status differentiations. Religious Affiliation and Social Stratification Catholics show a stronger propensity to remain in their crafts, and become master craftsmen, while Protestants are attracted to a larger extent to the upper ranks of skilled labor and administrative positions in factories. Protestants own a disproportionate share of capital. All other things equal, Protestants have been more likely to develop economic rationalism than Catholics. Weber seeks the explanation in 'the permanent intrinsic character of their religion,' and not only in their temporary external historico-political situations. The Reformation meant not the elimination of the church's control over everyday life, but a substitution of a new form of control for the previous one. While the Catholic church was fairly lax, Calvinism 'would be for us the most absolutely unbearable form of ecclesiastical control of the individual which could possibly exist.'
