In this revised and updated second edition of Social Stratification, the history of stratification research unfolds in systematic fashion, with the introductory articles in each section providing examples of the major research traditions in the field and the concluding essays (commissioned from leading scholars) providing broader programmatic statements that identify current controversies and unresolved issues. The resulting collection of articles both celebrates the diversity of theoretical approaches and reveals the cumulative nature of ongoing research. Paper Abstract:
Theoretical explanations. Contends that the United States is a social system with a high degree of social inequality. Uses two theories to illustrate this contention. Bottom-up individualistic interpretive/cultural theory; bureaucracy of modern social systems; influence of Weber and Marx. Top-down structural-functional or holist/interpretative theories; society as a system of shared values, meanings and symbols; influence of Durkheim. Paper Introduction: Social Stratification and Theoretical Explanations The thesis to be addressed in this report is that the United States appears to be a social system with a high degree of social inequality. There are several different sociological theories that have been used to explain this stratification, but this report will consider only two theories: a bottom-up individualistic theory and the top-down structural-functional theory. Bottom-up individualistic or interpretive/cultural understanding of society posits that individuals struggle against the bureaucracy of the modern social system with individual action and reasoning influenced by such variables as culture and values (Lecture 1, p. 2). These theories are heavily influenced by the work of Max Weber and also encompass ideas a

Please improve this article if you can. (January 2007) In sociology social stratification is the hierarchical arrangement of social classes castes and strata within a society . While these hierarchies are not universal to all societies, they are the norm among state-level cultures (as distinguished from hunter-gatherers or other social arrangements). According to Peter Saunders, in modern Western societies , stratification depends on social and economic classes comprising three main layers: upper class middle class , and lower class . Each class is further subdivided into smaller classes related to occupation. The term stratification derives from the geological concept of strata, or rock layers created by natural processes.

Social stratification is regarded quite differently by the principal perspectives of sociology. Proponents of Structural-functional Analysis
suggest that since social stratification exists in all societies, a hierarchy must therefore be beneficial in helping to stabilize their existence. Conflict Theorists consider the inaccessibility of resources and lack of Social Mobility in many stratified societies. They conclude, often working from the theories of Karl Marx , that stratification means that Working Class people are not likely to advance socioeconomically, while the Wealthy may continue to Exploit the proletariat generation after generation. "The advancement in technology have change the structure of mobility completely" (Francois Adley). However, some conflict theorists, mainly Weber and his followers also critique Marx's view and point out at that social stratification is not purely based on economic inequalities but is equally shaped by status and power differentials. They proceed to examine the basis and structure of stratification in society along all of the three axes.

by all the means you can,
in all the ways you can,
in all the places you can,
at all the times you can,
to all the people you can,
After the trip, these have taken on all new meaning for me.  It really makes me think about the ways and the places I spend my time.  The idea of doing ALL the good I can in ALL the ways I can goes far beyond the places and ways I currently spend my time.  This is not to say that the things I do are not good nor that they are not worthy of my time.  It is only to say that this trip has made me realized just how precious the resources that I have are, and that what may seem like such a small thing to me would actually mean the world to someone else.
