We arrived at the Tuskegee University, previously known as the Tuskegee Institute, around midmorning. The university was founded by Booker T. Washington in 1881. As the bus rolled through the iron gates, my first impression was that Tuskegee was much larger than I had expected. At first glance, the large brick buildings were very impressive and massive in size, but as I took a closer look, I realized the many of the buildings were in a state of disrepair. The university did not have enough funds to renovate the buildings and many were uninhabitable. The bus parked in a central location on campus near a statue of Booker T.
