THE MUSIC AND RITUALS OF EAST PORT OF SPAIN Newsday Historical Digest June 25, 2000 Page 13 An amaz ing subculture emerged in Port of Spain, in fact east Port of Spain, by the 1870s. It was significant because it contained the rootstock from which the Afro-Franco cultural matrix emerged into what we now call 'born creole'. This heterogeneous assortment of people more or less covered the intermingling of that flotsam and jetsam of Trinidad's Caribbean experience who had ended p here by the time of the British conquest in 1797. Despite attempts by the authorities, they had continued to preserve a fluid, free-wheeling lifestyle that contained the extremes of excessive religious piety and the working of obeah, drunken debauchery and the brave and ferocious activity of the stickfight. In terms of syncretic movements, it was unique. From a social point of view, the people who lived on the eastern fringes of Port of Spain and across the dry river into the hills of Laventille and Belmont established a culture from which calypso, Trinidad's version of Carnival and later steelband, was born. This culture was known as 'diametre' or jamettes society (beyond the diameter of polite society).

BRIEF HISTORY OF SPAIN
Spain's history was shaped by many forces. Celts, Romans, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Germanic tribes all had a part in influencing the people of Spain. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century, Spain was held by a barbaric white tribe, the Visigoths. Though they were Christians, their brand of Christianity was cruel and unjust. For this reason, Spain's Jews, serfs, and slaves aided the Islamic conquerors called Moors, that crossed the Straits of Gibraltar in the early 700's and took over Spain. The Moors ruled the area of Andalucia for more than seven hundred years and were perhaps the greatest influence on artistic and intellectual strength in Spain. Despite periods of instability, Andalucia flourished as a center of learning, trade and culture characterized a blend between the Christian and Arab worlds.

After a struggle with Christian forces, the Moors were finally shut out in 1492. Most of the Reconquests had been done by the mid-13th century and Spaniards slowly continued to take back the land. The Spanish church was a unifying factor. The Spanish were very devout Christians, who believed that they had the duty to convert others to the faith, by persuasion or force.

History of Spain: Prehistory and pre-Roman peoples in the Iberian Peninsula Modern humans in the form of Cro-Magnons began arriving in the Iberian Peninsula from north of the Pyrenees some 35,000 years ago. The best known artifacts of these prehistoric human settlements are the famous paintings in the Altamira cave of northern Spain, which were likely created about 15,000 BCE.
The historical peoples of the peninsula were the Iberians and the Celts, the former inhabiting the southwest part of the peninsula and along the Mediterranean side through to the northeast, the latter inhabiting the north and northwest part of the peninsula. In the inner part of the peninsula, where both groups were in contact, a mixed, distinctive, culture was present, known as Celtiberian.

Spain History Victory long overdue
For a country with one of Europe's strongest leagues, Spain have a disappointing record on the international stage. Olympic debut
The Spanish Football Association was formed in 1913 and seven years later Spain entered the football tournament at the Olympic Games in Antwerp where they won the silver medal. It was not the only notable achievement of that inaugural decade: in 1929, the year after the introduction of a professional national league, Spain became the first country from outside the British Isles to beat England, winning 4-3 in Madrid. Boom time
The Spanish made their debut appearance in the 1934 FIFA World Cup, beating Brazil in the first round before losing to Italy, but boom time for Spanish football came in the 1950s. To herald the decade that would see Real Madrid CF take a stranglehold on European club competition, Spain produced their best ever World Cup performance at the 1950 finals in Brazil. They won all three of their first-round group games before finishing fourth in the four-team group which decided the destiny of the trophy. Club dominance
Although Madrid stars Alfredo di Stéfano, an Argentinian, and Ferenc Puskás, a Hungarian, took Spanish nationality to play for the home country, they could not inspire success on the field. The mercurial Puskás played in the Spanish team at the 1962 World Cup squad where, coached by an Italian, Helenio Herrera, the Spanish fell at the first hurdle.

A period of dictatorial rule (1923-31) ended with the establishment of the Second Republic. Most of it was dominated by increasing political polarization culminating in the leftist Popular Front electoral victory in 1936. Pressures from all sides coupled with growing and unchecked violence led to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936. After the victory of his nationalist forces at the end of the 1930s Gen. Francisco Franco ruled a nation exhausted politically and economically. Spain did not participate in World War II but followed a pro-Axis policy. In results Spain was isolated by the victorious Allies at the beginning of the postwar period and the country did not join the United Nations until 1955. At the end of 1950 Spain began liberalizing trade and capital flows particularly foreign direct investment. But success of economic liberalization, Spain remained the most closed economy in Western Europe.

HISTORY
The Iberian Peninsula has been occupied for many millennia. Some of Europe's most impressive Paleolithic cultural sites are located there-the famous caves at Altamira contain spectacular paintings which date from about 15,000-25,000 years ago. The Basques are the first identifiable people of the peninsula and are the oldest surviving group in Europe. Iberians arrived from North Africa during a more recent period. Beginning in the ninth century BC, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Celts entered the Iberian Peninsula, followed by the Romans, who arrived in the second century BC. Spain's present language, religion, and laws stem from the Roman period. Although the Visigoths arrived in the fifth century AD, the last Roman strongholds along the southern coast did not fall until the seventh century AD. In 711, North African Moors sailed across the straits, swept into Andalusia, and, within a few years, pushed the Visigoths up the peninsula to the Cantabrian Mountains. The Reconquest-efforts to drive out the Moors-lasted until 1492. By 1512, the unification of present-day Spain was complete. During the 16th century, Spain became the most powerful nation in Europe, due to the immense wealth derived from its presence in the Americas. But a series of long, costly wars and revolts, capped by the defeat by the English of the "Invincible Armada" in 1588, began a steady decline of Spanish power in Europe. Controversy over succession to the throne consumed the country during the 18th and 19th centuries, leading to occupation by France in the early 1800s.

This may have included the Basques, as one of the pre-Celtic people. The most important culture of this period is that of the city of Tartessos. Beginning in the 8th century BCE, Celtic tribes entered the Iberian peninsula through the Pyrenees and settled throughout the peninsula, becoming the Celtiberians. The seafaring Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians successively settled along the Mediterranean coast and founded trading colonies there over a period of several centuries.

Chapter 1. Historical Setting
El Escorial, northwest of Madrid, built by Philip II in the second half of the sixteenth century THE NATIONAL HISTORY of Spain dates back to the fifth century A.D., when the Visigoths established a Germanic successor state in the former Roman diocese of Hispania. Despite a period of internal political disunity during the Middle Ages, Spain nevertheless is one of the oldest nation-states in Europe. In the late fifteenth century, Spain acquired its current borders and was united under a personal union of crowns by Ferdinand of Aragon (Spanish, Aragon) and Isabella of Castile (Spanish, Castilla). For a period in the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries, Portugal was part of that Iberian federation. In the sixteenth century, Spain was the foremost European power, and it was deeply involved in European affairs from that period to the eighteenth century. Spain's kings ruled provinces scattered across Europe. The Spanish Empire was global, and the influence of Spanish culture was so pervasive, especially in the Americas, that Spanish is still the native tongue of more than 200 million people outside Spain.

GupShup Forums GupShup Hangout GupShup Cafe´ PDA View Full Version : April fools day-The Truth by rizwan and Lone Ranger-merged LONE RANGER Mar 31st, 2003, 06:01 AM HISTORY OF 1ST APRIL
Dear friends
Most of us celebrate April fool day every year and fool each other isn't it! But how many of us know the bitter facts hidden behind it. It was around a thousand years ago that Muslims ruled Spain. And the Muslims power in Spain was so strong that it couldn't be destroyed. The Christians of the west wished to wipe out Islam from all parts of the world and they did succeed to quite an extent. But when they tried to eliminate Islam in Spain and conquer it they failed. They tried several times but never succeeded.
The unbelievers then sent their spies in Spain to study the Muslims there and find out what was the power they possessed and they found that their power was TAQWA. The Muslims of Spain were not just Muslims but they were practicing Islam.
They not only read the Quran but also acted upon it. e.g. the Quran said "Al Ghina Ashaddu Minaz Zina" i.e. Music is worse than Zina they also practiced it they said no to Music, they said NO to beer wine and all the other things forbidden in Islam disastrous. If they read about Hijab in the Quran they even practiced unlike most of us today. (Faith without Practice is disastrous-Hadith) so let us join hands and promise to become true practicing Muslims... And then when the Christians found the power of the Muslims they started thinking of strategies to break this power. So they started sending alcohol, girls, music and cigarettes to Spain free of cost. This technique of the west worked out and it started weakening the faith of the Muslims in particular the young generation of Spain.
