In spectrochemical analysis, we wish to convert measured spectral line intensities to concentration of the elements present in the sample. This is the process known as calibration. For a linear calibration, this function takes the general form y mx b C i A A I i where C i is the concentration of element i and I i is the measured spectral line intensity. (Note: This measured intensity may be either total or net intensity, that is, peak minus background.)

XI ITALIAN-HUNGARIAN SYMPOSIUM ON SPECTROCHEMISTRY : NEW CHALLENGES IN HUMAN HEALTH PROTECTION - ANTROPIC AND REMOTE AREAS (VENICE, OCTOBER 2003)
Biennial conference organised by ISS, UCF, ELTE, IDPA-CNR, UNESCO and CORILA
The Italian-Hungarian Symposium on Spectrochemistry is now in its eleventh edition. This biennial conference, since its onset in 1983 , aims at providing scientists from both countries with a permanent forum for discussing the results of their studies in the field of human health and environmental protection, exchanging views on priorities for future action and planning further joint projects. The XI Symposium features seven oral sessions and one general poster session to be held throughout the entire duration of the event. The most recent advances of spectrochemistry and other analytical techniques for investigating current aspects of human health and environmental protection will be taken into account, in particular as regards the challenges posed by urban settings and remote areas. In this context, presentations will focus on issues such as pollution from industrial plants and motor vehicles, occupational hygiene, pathologies caused by urban living as well as health aspects of importance under extreme conditions (space, polar regions). As for all the previous editions of this event, a number of prominent scientists from other countries will also participate in the Symposium, thus further expanding the coverage of topics which by definition are of a global nature.

The Laws of Spectrochemistry
From:
Spectroscopy
Date:
May 1, 2006
Author:
Schatzlein, Debbie; Thomsen, Volker
Spectrochemistry develops logically from the two primary laws presented here: 1) Each element has its own unique spectral signature, and 2) The intensity of the spectral line of an element is proportional to the concentration of the element present in the sample. In this article, we discuss the basic premises that underlie the science of spectrochemistry, which has been humorously referred to as a "black art" by some. We present the two primary "laws" of spectrochemistry and some of the consequences thereof. What follows relates to elemental analysis by atomic spectrometry, including atomic emission, atomic absorption, and X-ray fluorescence. Although molecular spectrometry and mass ...
